Having a small stack of FT-140-43s and FT-240-43s makes amateur radio so much better. If you work lower than 20 meters frequently, you might consider a 31 mix as well.

One of the reasons I leave the IC 705 at home when I do POTA/SOTA and using the computer is this issue. I have a FT-240-31 torroid and about 10 turns. I've also turned off USB charging and still have the noise when I hook it up to the computer like you had. When I use my Android phone to log with HAMRS, then I take the IC 705. I usually take the X6100 out on activations when I'm using my computer as it does not have the issue. I just ordered the FT-240-43 torroid and the USB cable in your link and wind up the crap out of it and see what happens. If this finally resolves the issue then it may go on more POTA/SOTA with me. When using WSJT-X instead of hitting the retry button to establish the connection you can go to "Preferences", "Radio" and select the USB port manually. At the home QTH that brings up a lot of USB ports but in the car with the MB Air it should only be probably two just like the USB mini, right and wrong! I'm also experiencing increased noise floor with an SDR dongle connected to my MacBook Air (which could be the same model as yours + I'm also running Linux, though with MATE instead of XFCE). With the desktop computer, it's better on HF, but worse on VHF and UHF due to DisplayPort and HDMI noise. However, even one or two of those clip-on ferrites make things better. The choke might be treating the symptom not the cause. The issue *may* be the fact that the computer and radio are galvanically connected via the USB. Consider - the chances that the radio and computer are at exactly the same voltage potential are slim - thus there *will* be an unintended current flow via the USB - and this *could* be the root of your problem. You could eliminate the galvanic connection by using an opto-isolator - but don't buy an 'el-cheapo' as they can generate HF hash! The cheap ones also limit the throughput speed - and thus might not work for your application. So you might need to buy an independantly powered USB opto-isolator - ie one that dosen't take it's power from either of the devices - a bit more expensive... 73 M0XYM

I was really disappointed at first when connected to the PC via USB cable, could not get rid of the noise. It turned out to be l had to turn off charging over usb in the settings, the noise was from the charging circuit for the battery.
The ferrite toroid was only needed to stop the radio locking up on transmit.

So even with charging off, you still had TX lockups? (Making sure I read that right)

Always use a good quality shielded USB cable. I've noticed a lot of the USB micro cables are poor quality.
USB-C seems to be better, but lacking on the radio of course.
    FT-240-43 for the win!

Very interesting.. thx for sharing.. I've noticed my noise increase on my ic-705 here in the shack when my mAT-705 tuner charges via the USB connection.. Looks like I should try your suggestion.. Great video as always ! !... Kevin ~ k0klb

Interesting one. I understand nothing about ft-8, but using the sdr-control app would prevent this issue, supposedly. I'm curious about it now =)

    • @temporarilyoffline

That's right! SDR Control would prevent the issue with the USB Cable - because there would be no USB cable!

@@temporarilyoffline but does the RFI cause malfunction on the network created to connect the radio and the pc/tabled? That's a good experiment.

@@ve2zdx It does sometimes, but the only time I've run it have been super-compromised positions (like inside a hotel room) and there are a whole lot of things going on there.. More to come as I know more.

I use SDR-Control with a MAC, and network access is the way to go. It is faster, untethered, and no noise problems. Best software I have purchased in a while.

A long understood and well documented issue with the IC-705 that even Icom has acknowledged. They claim there wasn't enough space in the radio for proper shielding and have essentially told the user community its their problem to deal with. This issue badly mars an otherwise great rig, and Icom's response to this issue is very disappointing. One solution that works great is to use the Remote Server package that comes with Icom's RS-BA1 software and just drive everything via wi-fi. In fact, I've been saying for over a year that Icom can apologize to the 705 community by providing a free IC-705 specific version of the Remote Server software. But all we get from them is "keep buying cables and adding chokes until you find something that works".

Agreed, icom makes interesting products, but could do a better job taking care of its customers. Apple had a similar problem with an iPhone model and gave out free phone cases to fix it.

Interesting problem Steve. I am a degree level trained Auto engineer, and I can see one problem with your set up, you are attacking the symptom, NOT the problem!. Seems to me that you have broken the first rule of fault finding by going straight for the simple answer. Surely, as the cable itself cannot produce noise, and the radio shows that the environment is "quiet", the problem must lie in the laptop? As a member of the "Big Hammer" school of engineering, I am totally lost with the magic of the gizmo, I reckon I would try and find a quieter laptop, rather than rely on having to choke everything off in sight. On the other hand, your "fix" worked so who am I to criticize!! 73 Jim M7BXT

    • @temporarilyoffline

Thanks Jim! In my normal operation with this radio I don't even have a laptop connected. I'm either in the field with paper and pen, or I'm in the home shack with multiple computers of varying kinds. One thing the comments on this video have shown is there are many ways to solve this problem and today I learned that there is a way to turn off the charging circuit in the radio which might also help. Its not like the Macbook is a 3rd tier player - Apple makes some of the best computer hardware out there - hard to hit that hammer any harder. But again, more testing/playing is warranted and possible. I have a Dell Laptop to toss at it as well as turning that charging circuit off! If anything magical/video worthy turns up, I'll have one out to show it.
