Helldivers 2 is the rare modern multiplayer game that does almost everything right. It gives you a ton of freedom, feels fantastic to play, and has a smart progression system that doesn’t nickel and dime you or rely too much on a paid battle pass. It manages to keep its missions fresh by introducing a ton of enemies, modifiers, and objectives, and varying them in interesting ways. There are some matchmaking and performance issues that still need to be worked out, and you can only go so far by yourself or with random players - but if you’ve got a solid squad, it’s an incredible time, and certainly one of the most fun multiplayer shooters in years.

This game brought back together all my buddies from the OG days of Halo 3 mp. Only now, we are in our mid 30's with young families yet still screaming at each other at 2am on HELLDIVE difficulty before we have to be up for work in several hours.
It's been ages since I've played a game sandbox that organically creates so many laughs, sweaty moments, clutch plays and memories all at the same time.
exactly how my last week has been. one of our friends passed recently and we all gifted the game to his account. feels crazy that 10 years ago we used to tape a box across the split screen so no one could screen peak.... now hes gone.

worth mentioning the 'battle pass' isn't timed and you can unlock it by just playing the game
This was my major draw. Why do season passes need to be timed. Why should we miss out just because we have work etc

@@garethmason7920well usually a battle pass gives you waaay more for your money than single items+most battle passes give you more currency than you spent on buying them so the risk of not getting everything seems fair

This Game will give you these memories you're gonna remember for years.

The free battlepass has the best weapons, like the Defender SMG and the Breaker shotgun. As they said in the video, you get Super Credits from the free pass and also a ton more during missions. This game is fantastic and the community is great too. You don't need to have friends joining you to complete high level missions, going in with randoms will do fine.

It's like a golden age of 3rd person shooters is upon us.
Two things, the difficulty DOES scale to your playercount (7:14), and it can sometimes be easier to run a two man squad than a four man squad, even on higher difficulties because of that. You get more rewards with a bigger group, but if teammates are burning up your reinforce and getting patrols called on you, you can do it with fewer people.
Second, you can choose which voice you'd like your Helldiver to have. If you like getting a new voice everytime, you can keep it on random, but the option is there to pick one permanently.
I'm also surprised that this review didn't account for the fact that matchmaking issues are caused by the huge surge of players. Once the playercount stabilizes, that should resolve itself.
The game is fantastic. There's a lot of weapons to use, the weapons have very noticeable impact on enemies, you feel like a badass with all the attacks you have, the combat is intense at the higher difficulty levels, and the game is only $40. Can't wait for the free content updates

1:45 lmfao Ahh It's sad that this wasn't the Starship Troopers game we wanted, but it's the Starship Troopers game we deserve. If this was originally a pitch for a Starship Troopers game the IP holders massively screwed up letting this slip through their fingers.
it's also worth noting the "Battlepasses" never expire. so there there is no rush
So for example if there are 5 battlepasses released at a point you can still unlock things from the 1st one ?
@TigerOwna Yes. They've said they want people to be able to actually finish battle passes, because they know we have lives outside of dying for Super Earth 😂

It's kinda dumb to put weapons and armor on the battle pass and it'd be even dumber to make those weapons and armor temporarily available.
The little details are great for example the bugs have the same nervous system as a bug even if you kill them they can attack and move for a little bit. Actually it does scale with player count
No it doesn't. The reason why it feels like you're getting swarmed more is because of detection. If you're on your own, the battle is smaller, making it easier to contain. With 4 people running around aggro-ing patrols, each player can send down 4 different reinforcements at the same time.
Got mauled by a limping headless bug that died the instant it murdered me.
Servers are going to be EVEN MORE overload now lol.

I'm starting to hope that the ship might be turning with gaming - even the most lump headed business executive can't fail to see the numbers favour games that are developed in a non predatory and artisanal manner, oddly enough how most of the great franchises got their start. Time will tell though
This is a game done right and not focusing on how to get more money out of you but focusing on the experience and that's what we all want

you can get pretty far w/ random players too... I've successfully cleared all difficulties but the very last one w/ randos w/out any issue, as long as they are not newbies or griefers (later are few and far between, only encountered 1 during my 80+ hours playing this)... that being said it is indeed way more enjoyable playing w/ friends, old or new... me personally, have made 2 dozen friends on this game alone, for a usually quite nice to each other, likely cuz is a PvE exclusive title... game is great really XD
Anyone pointing fingers at the devs for server overload need their brains tested. The game just passed the Steam record for ALL TIME CONCURRENT PLAYERS ON DESTINY 2 last night. No one would have taken 1000/1 odds on that two weeks ago.
There is absolutely no way they were prepared for that & they cannot be expected to have.
Give them some time. What we are seeing here is the most unprecedented level of popularity with any online co op game ever made.

The Gameguard anti cheat ruins the game on PC. The game will often fail to open because Gameguard will claim it has errors or isn't up to date. Or Gameguard will hard crash the game leaving the only option to unplug the system. It also is always active which can effect the whole PC, not just the game. So many people, myself included. Have had issues where Gameguard won't even allow us to open other games. Spamming errors everytime you try to open them. I'm not trying to discourage people from playing this game. It's truly a great game when you can play. Just annoying everyone talks this game up but never mentions this glaring issue.

This is a easy 10/10 for me. Sure it has issues with how many people joined. Its a success not even the devs expected.. but the game is basically near perfect. It does everything right and its fun.
Definitely feels like the starship troopers we should have gotten and glad it’s here

Not to mention you can EASILY get 1000 supercredits from just playing the game. less than 20 hours for the battlepass.

This is Starship Troopers but rebranded. That battle tank looks like an All terrain scout transport from Star Wars.
Helldivers 2 is the modern day Halo: CE, gears of War, Left for Dead. Fantastic!
Difficulty does actually scale to player count. With fewer players in a lobby, you will see smaller patrols, featuring less dangerous mixes of enemies, as well as smaller quantities of high-tier enemies. For example, on difficulty 9 (the max), two players might face reinforcements/patrols with 0 - 2 tanks along with a cluster of light infantry. With four players, you will see patrols and reinforcements featuring both varieties of tank, both varieties of dreadnought, light walkers, exploding suicide infantry, heavy and light infantry. All at the same time.
Thr game does not scale to players. Having more players means you are drawing more attention from patrols. The difficulty only scales with challenge rating and other than that its luck of the draw for how many enemies are on patrol.

The game does seem to have potential, but seems a bit repetitive considering all you do is just kill hordes of aliens from what I’ve seen. Imo it seems like another 1-2 month tiktok trend and then the game dies out
You don't HAVE to play with friends. You can play with random people.
Even with all the other weapons, the base assault rifle you get in the TUTORIAL, is still the most reliable and best gun throughout the whole game.

Fun game but the server issues are absolutely horrendous. How can a Sony title fail so hard at capacity?
Because it’s published by Sony but they don’t own the studio only the IP. Their previous game never had these numbers. They did not expect this level of success. They can’t keep up.
Every time they increase or fix the servers within minutes it’s squeaky bum time again. It’s already getting better every day though. I’ve barely had issues.
The studio have already said that they didn't anticipate this kind of success and allocated a set number of server space based on the last game. They're working very hard on expanding that right now. It's Sony published but the studio isn't owned by Sony. They're a small team of about 100 staff.
Unfortunately we are losing the battle. The automatons are growing intelligent and are directly attacking the game’s servers, stopping Helldivers from dispensing freedom. However our great leaders are making progress stopping them, but as of now we are in dark times

Modern guns don't use clips. Can't imagine futuristic ones will go back to using ww2 era implements such as "clips"
Everything outside of the game, like microstransactions, GaaS, the game being effectively down on a weekend because of server capacity, always online, crashes, not receiving mission rewards, it's just a fun, cinematic, chaotic game.
Is this game worth buying for solo only?
Only if your a master like me.
the game isnt really designed or balanced for purely solo mission, however, playing with randoms have been a great experience. it also has a great ping system so you can comunicate with your team without even having to talk.

At the moment, it's not worth buying at all. Servers are overloaded and it's a buggy mess if you're lucky enough to get in. I'm approaching 2 hours of sitting in the queue, and will probably get a refund if it isn't fixed soon.
@UltraWoof It's probably best to play with randoms like in remnant 2 but it's fun to do solo challenges and see how far you get.
It also has a kernel level anti-cheat which brings some cyber security concerns should they come across a supply chain attack rendering your anti-virus useless.
Which is something some folks will want to keep in mind.

Ngl I’ve actually met up with a lot of old friends playing this game because we would all overlap and trying to load into public servers was dead for a while so joining random people on your friends list was the move
Double-A games are where all the best games are. The budgets aren't so high that devs aren't willing to take a chance on more niche ideas. And at the same time it still has enuff of a budget to look like a polished product.

This game apparently took more than 7 years to make with more than 100 people working on it, that seems like AAA game development to me. Sony is just smart to price them $40 because it is a multiplayer game.

Some of ya are major capping about this game. It's fun. Don't get me wrong, but once you reach level 30, it's just grinding for slightly better ship upgrades and farming 100 medals for one gun.
Endgame wise is lacking but we know more factions are being added.

Endgame starts as soon as you get in your hellpods for the first time. You gotta incentivise yourself with the fun of gameplay with friends and not with more rewards or levels.
