We should give credits to Schaub for breaking barriers. Growing up, I used to think that comedy specials are supposed to be the funniest of the funniest. You know, because it's called a special. But Brendan, he broke that Barrier and proved something like that can still be called a "comedy" and "special".

Dude is the most insecure guy I have seen for many years. When he started crying when Joe Rogan said he needed to stop fighting because he wasn’t good enough I couldn’t stop laughing. His ego doesn’t match what he actually is.
You would think he would’ve learned by now what most of us learned long ago, how tough you are doesn’t have anything to do with how good you are at something specific, like fighting, but how you handle adversity life throws at you. And this dude does not handle it well at all.

I grew up doing martial arts. Karate, kickboxing, some boxing, and I got into BJJ and MMA in the mid 90s, WAYYYY before it became all the rage. I was a good fighter, actually a REALLY good fighter. But not the best, and definitely not the best of the best. I had the right stuff to go pro in MMA or kickboxing, and probably boxing if I had focused there. But a couple of things made me realize not to go that route. One was meeting Muhammad Ali. He was in his mid 40s and was just a shell of a man. He was the greatest, but look what happened to him.
The other was watching Roy Jones Jr. fight. I realized that no matter how hard I trained, no matter how much I worked or how many steroids I took, I wouldn't be that type of athlete, I didn't have the God given gift of that type of speed, reflexes, or overall athleticism. THAT was a gut check, but my EGO could handle it. And thank God I went a different route, because I'm 43 and my mind is still sharp, and I didn't need to make a living giving and receiving brain damage.
I think Brendan has had too many shots to the head, and could probably greatly benefit from neurological rehabilitation. There are a number of methods. It will chill him out and help him be better at what he does currently.
Being a truly funny comedian takes a certain amount of intellect. It takes someone who looks at the world a bit differently. This dude has none of those qualities.

Thats one way but many comedian are so called natural born comedians and they just are funny they dont use much time thinkin complicated jokes they just know how To make ppl laugh. One good example is theo von
Being a funny stand up has a lot to do with being able to act too, because they all pretty much act. They write a script, they rehearse it, then they go on stage and deliver it to an audience... and you can tell the bad actors when they do. It's why I have trouble watching a lot of stand up, it's not that the material isn't funny, it's that the delivery is unnatural, forced and clearly rehearsed. There are a lot more intelligent people than stand up comedians, they just didn't go into the arts or acting or writing etc.
The intelligent comedian thing is also producing a lot of pretentious shit and "clapter" as well. This happens more when comedians talk about comedy than in specials etc, but as an example, Dave Chappelle giving his acceptance speech for the Mark Twain award, in a room filled with comics, says that stand up comedy _"is the truth... I'm not talking about the content... I'm talking about the artform... ya understand?"_ . Predictably this met with rousing clapter from his colleagues... but as a statement it really doesn't mean anything. Its more a pat on the back for himself and all the other comics. I don't mean to pick on Dave (who has a lot of genuinely funny material) either, it's rampant in the comedy scene, just watch comedians in cars drinking coffee or any of the infinite number of clips of Joe Rogan talking to comics about stand up, and so on.

Also, with Netflix and others pouring so much money on stand up for years (its cheaper than green lighting TV shows or movies) the material has gotten weaker too. The bar is too low. Comics now that never would have had a special on showtime or HBO back in the day have specials on Netflix that are alarmingly shit. Bring back competition dammit lol

I would argue that it's really rare for someone to reach such professional heights utilizing such methods without someone, ANYONE, being convinced that they're proficient in their particular field. With Schaub though, it's not even an exaggeration but a generalization to say that there's NO ONE who finds this guy funny enough to warrant filming two specials.

I remember when it got exposed that his podcast was completely scripted, every joke, word for word, and he lied about it, and they edited the episode out where the oops, transcript of written out jokes was accidentally shown on screen proving it was scripted.

The funny thing is that he has lived a life that could make for a damn funny comedian. He just needs to be able to pull back and laugh at himself. He takes himself and his accomplishments too seriously and that doesn't make for good comedy. The man had 2 yards his entire college football career. He got knocked out so bad that one of his best friends had to tell him he wasn't cut out for fighting. He made a comedy special that was somehow more hated the Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer. This is comedy gold. Too bad he can't take advantage of it because he's too busy enjoying the smell of his own shit.

Joe gave him a talk because he was friendly, funny, and smart. He saw he had options to change his life that others didn’t have and still had time. It wasnt because schaub sucked. Schaub could have won more fights, but fighting comes with a price. He wasn’t the greatest of all time or anything but he was still a legit fighter. I don’t understand why people are hating schaub so badly that people are just blatantly making up lies and discrediting his accomplishments, most likely coming from a bunch of losers.
He's definitely high on his own supply. I actually found Schaub quite funny (in JRE videos, his specials are perhaps the worst thing known to man) and gave him a lot more benefit of the doubt than most, including my best friend. But when he then started pulling routine CTE induced madness like saying 'even if Masvidal got beaten, he's still the BMF, the BMF was the real title not the actual welterweight belt that Colby and Usman were then competing for and that the entire division were pursuing their careers around' and committing to a tonne of similar stances of absolutely unheard levels of lick-arsing whenever in the presence of anyone notable (only to then immediately swing to a polar opposite point when he's with someone else), he started to rub me the wrong way quick. It's not that he's not self-aware, it's that he's almost deliberately, intentionally oblivious to how atrocious he is at comedy. Now I've just accepted the memes of him and laugh at his expense whenever possible.
Brendan’s comedic problem is thinking he’s the lead when he’s suited for a sidekick roll, like an Andy Richter to a Conan. You don’t see Andy trying to pursue an independent standup/comedy career. That’s Brendan at his BEST, an assist.

That podcast episode with Bobby Lee is overall really good, it's the first time Bobby ever confronted his bullies and he was so uncomfortable because he was gonna let that bullshit slide if it weren't for Ethan asking.
