If it wasn't for bands like Green Day, Offspring, Rancid and Nofx I never would have heard or gotten into the first wave punk bands like Ramones, Pistols, Clash, Misfits etc...even Rockabilly from the 50's and 60's my old man listens to. I don't listen to Green Day or the Offspring anymore but still have major respect for them.

I was in high school and college in the 90's and, like you, the same bands you mentioned (plus Pennywise) made me go back and check out the bands that those bands were listening to and influenced by. Also, the more I traced that sound back, past the first-wave punk bands like The Ramones, The Damned, The Clash, etc., the more bands I found: The Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, The Sonics, etc. Another step back found me listening to the same garage rock and surf artists that my dad loved back in the day: The Kinks, The Animals, Dick Dale, Link Wray, The Ventures, The Trashmen, etc. Good music always opens up more good music for me. And finally, also like you, I definitely don't listen to The Offspring anymore, and I listen to Green Day and Rancid much less than I did. But I'll always have good memories attached to them and their early albums.

Metallica was HEAVILY influenced by the Misfits (and Glenn Danzigs other projects, like Samhain and Danzig) and Metallica has also covered a few misfits songs so i think this is a great tribute to them. Plus like the other commenter said, Metallica is probably too complex for a 3peice like GD to play.

They were Ramones and misfits fans growing up I know they were friends with the Ramones I don't know if they were friends with The Misfits but on the garage Inc revisited the cover to couple of Misfits songs that were pretty sweets they did die die my darling and Green Hell and death comes ripping.

the defining thing about this song is that it's so short. it may not be an equation of notes for a guitar bridge like Zeppelin and the lyrics on the surface are very akin to other Misfits songs (about Island of Dr Moraeu to be exact)- but it's a feeling. it has such a raw, beautiful, angry, sad and joyful at once energy that can't help but get a reaction from the listener. It's addictive, you don't simply play the song once, you hit repeat a few times; even on vinyl. it's that melody that you'll randomly think about and need to play it to sedate that next minute and a half. Danzig had that secret to write such a simple piece of work that manages to whir up such a strong feeling. and that's why the misfits are legends. a simple feeling.

Just want to state my opinion. To the ones who say that Green Day are not punk anymore, punk is not all about the sound of it. It's in the lyrics and the meaning behind it. It's not meant to sound perfect, but it can still sound well done. Also, punk is more like a religion in a way, it's a belief. Everyone has their own definition of it, but my definition of punk is standing up for what you believe in and going against the current if you believe something's wrong with it. Green Day IS still punk, believe it or not, because if you pay attention to their lyrics on their recent albums, punk is evident in them. I realize that newer songs of theirs like "Kill the DJ" don't sound punk at all really. But I respect the members of Green Day for coming out with 3 albums in 2012. They changed up their sound a bit, and as music artists, they have the right to do that. They knew that not everyone was going to like it, and that's fine with them because they still have a lot of hard core fans such as me. Thanks, guys. :)

Punk is a sub-culture and a lifestyle, not to shit on green day, this cover didn't actually suck, but being on a big label, and making lots of money from merchandise isn't compatible with being punk. They have punk roots, but the left that behind years ago when they stopped playing bars and garages. They wanted the money, theres nothing wrong with that, and they can do whatever the fuck they want, but they aren't punks.

Some have even covered it well (Elf Power's take is particularly boffo), but if you're going to participate in a band's tribute album, maybe best to honor that band's own material...SMH.
Awesome take on misfits song. As far as them being punk still, who knows. Loose term. I do know that Green days earlier albums like Kerplunk and Slappy hours(abbreviated title) and Dookie were all same sound, vibe, ethos, etc. mainstream came to them, they didn't change to get a big contract and on MTV. They may have changed sound and perspective significantly in last 15 years but hey bands grow. All I truly know is that they gave their old record label (lookout records-that has other pop punk bands like The Queers on label) and let them keep royalties and rights to say thanks and hook up old business partners and the underground scene instead of bogart inn all that loot which they could have. They get some cred for that in my book.

Just want to state my opinion. To the ones who say that Green Day are not punk anymore, punk is not all about the sound of it. It's in the lyrics and the meaning behind it. It's not meant to sound perfect, but it can still sound well done. Also, punk is more like a religion in a way, it's a belief. Everyone has their own definition of it, but my definition of punk is standing up for what you believe in and going against the current if you believe something's wrong with it. Green Day IS still punk, believe it or not, because if you pay attention to their lyrics on their recent albums, punk is evident in them. I realize that newer songs of theirs like "Kill the DJ" don't sound punk at all really. But I respect the members of Green Day for coming out with 3 albums in 2012. They changed up their sound a bit, and as music artists, they have the right to do that. They knew that not everyone was going to like it, and that's fine with them because they still have a lot of hard core fans such as me. Thanks, guys. :)

Green Day started doing pop songs about love. sold out alot. how is that punk in any way? the trilogy was the worst thing they have ever done.
Yeah becaus they we're teenagers. now they're ~40 years old and suddenly they start to make pop songs about love. it's not very good lyrics either. there's a few songs that had okay lyrics that they should have kept and tried to make them a little bit better, and they shouldn't have started doing this pop thingy, they're adults, not some 18 year olds who are controlled by media and their managers. fucking act like it.
Punk is a sub-culture and a lifestyle, not to shit on green day, this cover didn't actually suck, but being on a big label, and making lots of money from merchandise isn't compatible with being punk. They have punk roots, but the left that behind years ago when they stopped playing bars and garages. They wanted the money, theres nothing wrong with that, and they can do whatever the fuck they want, but they aren't punks.

Right On. I have no earthly idea what Metallica has to do with Hybrid Moments. Maybe they covered it, I can only guess, but so what, who hasn't?. Some have even covered it well (Elf Power's take is particularly boffo), but if you're going to participate in a band's tribute album, maybe best to honor that band's own material...SMH.

Awesome take on misfits song. As far as them being punk still, who knows. Loose term. I do know that Green days earlier albums like Kerplunk and Slappy hours(abbreviated title) and Dookie were all same sound, vibe, ethos, etc. mainstream came to them, they didn't change to get a big contract and on MTV. They may have changed sound and perspective significantly in last 15 years but hey bands grow.
All I truly know is that they gave their old record label (lookout records-that has other pop punk bands like The Queers on label) and let them keep royalties and rights to say thanks and hook up old business partners and the underground scene instead of bogart inn all that loot which they could have. They get some cred for that in my book.
