Nice to know the game was good enough to change your mind on a combat style! I grew up on things like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Pokemon, Earthbound and other classic turn-based RPGs, so I have always had a love for the more slow and methodical approach to combat, and it wasn't until I played stuff like Oblivion that I even knew real time combat RPGs were a thing lol. Playing BG3 felt like coming back home after being away at college.
Haven't you ever played board games, miniature wargames or real RPGs? These are turn based by necessity and that doesn't make them any less exciting for millions of players worldwide. Before I even played my first turn-based cRPGs or tactical games (Fallout2 or Chaos Gate) I've had a decade of experience with tabletop games so it felt so natural for these titles to be turn-based and first Baldur's Gates actually felt somewhat off with their real time with pause action.
In my college days I played a lot of Civilisation (I). Which is a turn based strategy game. But other than that, I never played a lot of turn based computer games (of course I did play turn based board games as @robertchmielecki2580 mentions, I wouldn't have thought of that if it wasn't for him!). The game that got me into turn-based CRPGs was Larian's Divinity: Original Sin. I knew BG3 would be special and worth playing because of that game!
I don't like turn based either but BG3 combat is so dynamic and has so many possibilities I genuinely forgot it was turn based the whole time, or most of the time. Only time I even thought "oh yeah this is turn based" was during big fights with lots of enemies and even then I was so engaged I was thinking about how I'd react when it was my turn thinking of strategies. BG3 really is a masterpiece of a game.
BG3 was my first dive into turn based games and DND mechanics. Steep learning curve for sure, but man was it worth it. BG3 absolutely earned every accolade it won this year. Amazing game!
Trying this game in honour mode makes the turn based combat so much more strategic as you feel like you need to study the opponent and predict his next move to win a tough fight and sometimes hope that RNG is on your side
@@respectofjaygaming3715 Easier to not save scum when it's off. No different than someone going on a diet and throwing out junk food. Easier to avoid it if it isn't around.
Baldur's Gate 3 made me fall back in love with gaming in general. Most games I'll buy and play for a couple hours to 30 hours, and that's it. I don't remember the last time where a game has COMPLETELY capture me in their world with 400 hours in and a 3rd playthrough. This game is quite honestly a blessing and I can't stress that enough(and there is no microtransactions).
Fantastic video as always. I actually had a different good experience with the game. I hardly ever finish games because I simply get bored by the end content. However, BG3 had so much going on that I never really became bored and finished it. Which inspired me to go back and work on completing some other games which I was like “Well, I 100% should have stuck this out to the end”
this is the content i crave but fr glad it had that impression on you. i grew up playing a lot of turn based games and always really enjoyed the 'strategic' element to that kinda play style.
same as me renfail, loved the old real time with pause in bg 2 and pillars of eternity, but bg 3, rogue trader and wasteland 3 are 3 quality turn based games
You're right on the money with the D&D aspect. I played all my playthroughs in Tactician, because I've played other turn-based games and felt like I was up to the challenge, and challenged I was. But it is true that, sometimes, I would spot an obvious fight or succeed on an ambush perception, and would strategically place my characters for these encounters. I still died a lot, and replayed so many fights, even advantageous ones. I've seen people claim Tactician is a snooze anyway, but man, was my experience different haha. Aside from the difficulty, the game is just so well done. It's a shame that this is an outlier and not the norm, I'm sad that I probably won't feel the same kind of excitement from other games after playing BG3, what I consider is the (current?) pinnacle of turn-based RPG.
There are 2 kinds of people: 1) People who think Real-Time-With-Pause is good; and 2) People with correct opinions. All kidding aside, really happy to see you going back & enjoying these great games.
i love how party comp can shift the level of complexity and how important short vs long rests are. first play through short rests were king. fighter, swords bard/rogue, warlock, cleric. usually only long rested cause cleric ran out of spells/ ran out of short rests. turns out i missed out on so much camp events in my first run.
I think one thing about the bg3 combat is you're not constantly spamming fights as you would In JRPGs. But, when you see them, they can take like 10 minutes- 30m if like a boss- hour if you're having a hard time lol. The fights actually matter and every encounter, at least when you start out, can actually wipe ya, which is nice i think when compared to grindy games. Another aspect I like is Like in Slay the spire, you need to plan your party(deck in STS) to deal with problems- AOE, single target for the elites, mob type, patch healing(STW it's like, get single target damage high for first floor, aoe second, thinking about the types of bosses and elites you'll face too)... Lastly BG mirrors a table top game. I actually wonder if FF could go back to it's roots of maybe lets say FF tactics if it sort of takes aspects of BG3. They could also look into a table top game to mirror too, such as cards and stuff :)
True true! I havn't played cyberpunk but i wonder if it would have been better putting more elements from the table top game into it. Hearing starfield is putting mechanics into the game too lol@@Renfail
I feel like Baldurs Gate 3 made CRPG's more mainstream for a bigger audience. I have had tons of friends who have never played CRPG's start to give more of them a try after beating Baldurs Gate 3. I myself have even gone back and checked out older CRPG's on GOG. I still need to beat BG3, have over 100 hours in act 3. Just so many side quests in the town. Keep up the great videos.
Just randomly came to your video and I’m glad you had a change of mind on turn based games. Xcom is what got me into them. Then I picked up wasteland 3 because it was like xcom but thought it was much better than xcom. Then came bg3… this game for me, blew the others way. Game is simply amazing. My #1 favorite game. Witcher 3 was my #1 but now it’s my #2.
@@Renfail for me it was the story and the world. I just loved exploring it. Looking out into the distance and seeing that beautiful view. Story really caught my attention and drew me in. Especially the side quest with some of the other companions
Using Mouse and Keyboard makes everything feel faster than using controller IMO. It's a noticable difference. Controller is cool for when I just want to lay back and chill game though. I think they could cut down on a few of the controller actions to make it a faster if they wanted. Those options may already be there for all I know. Like do i neeed to click a again to confirm select a different character after already hitting left trigger to move the selector? Just little stuff like that.
BG3 and Solasta have changed my preference from RTWP to Turn based. I've accepted the longer game play in exchange for the precise control. I did despise Turn based in DOS2, but the story was so good I sucked it up (twice). Just started Deadfire on RTWP and am now regretting it. Oh well, just need to master the AI settings. Cheers
I often find far more variety in turn based games then in action based game. Like how many action games are just built off the idea of timed I-framing attacks with dodge rolls. There's really only a limit number of ways to test someone's reflexes and dexterity.
The kids claiming they never die to hard mode are the sort that stormed out of D&D groups back in the day when it didn't go their way. Glad you found BG3 compelling enough to give turn based a go. BG3 definitely earned the awards they received hands down. I truly hope they throw loads of DLC modules at it in the future.
I've never shied away from turn based games, but as I get older, I enjoy them even more. My anxiety and my crappy reflexes make action gaming harder these days haha.
So I grew up in the 80's & 90's. I saw the birth of FPS, RTS, ARPGs and Isometric CRPGs. I've been a competitive Quake 3 Arena player, but Infinity Engine games like BG1 & 2, Icewind Dale and my long time fav narrative Planescape:Torment will always have the superior Stories. You play them to try to come close to D&D. BG1 taught me D&D even though I only started playing in 2017. Bg3 beat everything on my all time list. As i past my 45th year, it's less about action and twitch response, and more into amazing memories.... I Live in a Pre- BG3 and Post BG3 gaming World now. Legendary Game!
Same for me, it was kind of a slog at first because I was so overwhelmed and slightly dissapointed by the slow nature of the combat. But after forcing myself to understand how it works and what possibilities there are in the world, characters and combat, I was truly amazed by how impactful creativity feels. Im still very new and 20 hours in, and not even found the goblin camp yet, but im having more and more fun each time I play it. I wish my friends would give it a chance to explore and goof off together, but we usually play competitive shooters and such, so it's really hard to persuade them to give it a shot xD
BG3 was the same for me. I never enjoyed turn-based games so I sat on this one for a bit. I bought it on a whim since I heard it was good and I was so happy it was fantastic!
I totally agree with you! I used to not really get into CRPGs or TRPGs, but BG3 changed my mind. It showed me that CRPGs are actually the kind of games I enjoy. What's even more amazing is the depth of RPG mechanics in the CRPG genre compared to studios like Bethesda, CD Projekt Red, and Bioware. Don't get me wrong; I've enjoyed their games, but when you compare them to BG3, it's like night and day.I feel like the big AAA studios are simplifying RPGs and focusing more on action. BG3 reminds me of what happened last year with the Souls series. I've always been a fan of Souls games, but my friends didn't really get into them until Elden Ring came out. It was a great game to introduce new players to the Souls series, just like BG3 is a fantastic game to introduce people to the CRPG genre.I do wish that more CRPGs would invest in voice acting or incorporate AI for certain key characters. I'm not looking for the full AAA treatment that Larian did with full voice and lip syncing. It could be as simple as a picture of the character with voice acting - nothing too extravagant.
so happy it changed your mind... the sad truth is though that so many ppl simply have no effin clue how insanely good BG3 is .. how deep ,simple and complex at the same time , with 100's of hours replayability ... and im totally generalising here.. it's mostly close minded ppl with short attention spans, that do not like turn based games ( let the flaming begin ) 🙂 all the cod's, battlefield aso aso aso.. the instant gratification grps as i call them .... LOL i know im stretching it here, but thers some truth to my statement...
I have to play pc for these types of games. Using a controller with that console version of the inventory would drive me nuts. Glad to see your enjoying the game.
I come from the other side. I grew up with the Battle Isle games, and I always loved the requirement of thinking ahead during your turn, because you don't see what the enemy has up for you until it's their turn. Battle Isle 4 in particular has some nasty surprises there. And I also loved having the time to strategize. So I rather hated realtime. Too hectic, no time to really plan ahead. That has kept me away from Stellaris for a long time, because it's realtime. Turns out with pause mode it's just fine even for a turn-based enjoyer like me.
Renfail i was also someone who did not give CRPGs the time of day as well until Baldurs Gate 3 came out and was peer pressured by my friends on Discord to get it, Boy was i happy that i listened and gave in lol.. one of the only times peer pressure worked in my favor. Baldurs Gate 3 deserves all of the praise it is getting as well as GOTY. I cannot wait to see what Larian has planned next. Hope you had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well. Keep up the amazing work brother. Just so everyone knows if your reading this comment it took Larian 4 years to make BG3, one thing that the community needs to make sure is not to pressure them in releasing another game too quickly and unfinished. I think everyone would be on the same page that they rather wait 4-5 years for another masterpiece than 1-2 and it be another Starfield.... even though Starfield was in development for i think 3 years or more lol....
yea I got my friends on turn based as well. they were so use to say Pillars of Eternity where you could be in an encounter pause it and cast a spell or buff on all of your chars then unbuff and just murder the screen. They were not vibing with BG3 at first but now love having to watch things unfold.
You don't have to kill the hag's "guards". You can sneak by, and they'll pop up in the end battle with the hag - but if you focus on the hag, take her down without killing the guards, you'll save them and the one says something about meeting in Baldur's Gate. Been a few months since I played it. There's also a way to save Minthara too if you want to (when the time comes, if you take the destroy the goblins route).
@@Renfail: Na, I got it - I was just pointing out all the ways you can complete this game (that change the story) and how you don't really see that in other games (and hoping its not a one and done for this way of game making).
Heyo o/ old DnD vet here too and am playing the game completely blind :). I managed to get lucky with that fight on balanced, since I play Rogue / Ranger and tend to sneak everywhere, so I saw them beforehand :D. And managed to setup a little ambush, but it was not easy to win. I would say the number 1 killer in dnd is Action economy. Close followed by goblins at lvl 1 xD.
Im so glad you gave this a try! Incredible game for sure. I do have to say, if i was playing dnd and was walking into a hags lair id definitely be trying to sneak around and be stratigical instead of just rushing in. Unless i was playing a barbarian of course haha
Literally the first thing that came out of my mouth when I went into turn based combat in bg3 is EWWWWW because I had much different expectations. But after putting like 600 hours into it I can say it makes combat so fun and engaging. So much strategy you can do and mechanics you can take advantage of, unlike other games with real time combat like Skyrim or Elden ring (which I also love)
I would recommend you to also try Gear tactics and Warhammer 40k: Chaos Gate - Demonhunters (more futuristic). Both of them are turn based RPG with great combat and unit customization...and decent storyline(chaos gate is better in terms of story)... the downside being that they do not have world exploration like BG3 or Divinity
Many of us from the OGG (Original Gaming Generation) grew up on turn-based combat. It was slow. But games made the combat challenging enough that if you went fast like today, it was just death. You had to think your strategy, tactics, and that brought a new level of excitement to the game.
I grew up playing the first two games and I love the third one as well big time. The first two are different its a pause system they use works very well but they are much much much harder its based off 3.5 If i remember correctly amazing games. The third one plays pretty nuch like Divinity Sin 2 just more of everything. That is still an amazijg game to go back to play as well also looks amazing
I've been a turn based gamer since i tried Civilization and Doom and Wolfenstein demos around the same time, and had no problem with Civilization, but i was horrible at the demo's even playing for over 15 hours! The only non turn based games i play are Minecraft and No Mans Sky!
I love both systems when they are implemented right. Turn Based allows for more strategic and meaningful battles. No 2 encounters in BG3 are the same, they each have their small differences with a variety of enemies and environmental dangers. Look at the fight against Aunty Ethel underneath her hut! We have a single powerful enemy who casts spells, can turn invisible, clones herself, teleports, and on top of that we have a hostage in a burning cage that we need to rescue. It’d be a mess to play that in real time! Same with, for example, the final battle against Ketheric Thorm. Each battle has its small puzzles that forces you to think. You say that TB allows you to take your time, but with most battles in BG3 it’s mandatory to not die. TB allows a greater level of complexity. Real Time With Pause can be more frenetic, and can throw more enemies at you with no fear of bogging you down because it’s all in real time. It can also have more encounters in a single dungeon against trash enemies. Look at Irenicus’ Dungeon in BG2, there are dozens of goblins all over the place that don’t really challenge you but are there to keep you on your toes and keep the pressure that, yes, you’re surrounded by enemies. Same if you compare the defense of the druids’ grove with the defense of the tavern in Wrath of the Righteous. In WotR you really feel the enemy is throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you with tons of enemies. An encounter as big as that wouldn’t really be fun in BG3.
A lot of ppl don't understand when their sense of cognitive ease simply needs enough time with something new to become familiar with it. It's that invisible sense of something being "meh" that is simply unfamiliar to you, which if given a chance you actually find to be great.
I think I am going to do my second run with controller only. I played most of ACT1 with kb/m and ACT2 started using controller a small amount. Just need to finish ACT3!
@@Renfail Yea, I played it on PC with a controller and I prefered it, UI and key mapping are definitely better but i loved to seamlessly switch between cpntroller and mouse UI. But then I installed direct control and camera mods and it's been amazing ever since!
Another amazing turned based game is gears tactics. Its a Microsoft exclusive single player only. But its honestly an amazing game. Its cover based shooter like xcom
Given how much of the negative discourse about BG3 is, "Turn-based games are bad!" I really like seeing videos like this where you say that BG3 helped changed your tune on turn-based games. I love strategy games of all stripes, but turn-based is my jam. XCOM and Civ have been two of my long-time bread and butter games. My poor brain just doesn't process very quickly, so part of what I always enjoy is the ability to just sit and think out my next move and look at my options. And it lets me do more complex builds/characters/etc because I have time to think about what abilities I want to use. I hope more people who normally aren't into that sort of game gives BG3 a try!
I had the same mindset, i mostly played action rpg like TW3 for example and i only played turn based games a long time ago when i played Fallout 1 and 2 multiple times. I'm also an old player who is 64 now and i play games since more than 30 years. So i hesitated for a long time about BG3, thinking i would hate the gameplay even if the cutscenes looked gorgeous and extremely interesting. But just before christmas i bought BG3 and decided to play it even if i was almost sure that i would not like it. But after a short while i get accustomed to it and i started to like it. For a total noob in D&D like me, i had a lot to learn and the game can be overwhelming with all those spells, potions, conditions that change how things work. But after a few hours i really started to love it and have a great fun. Now i have about 400 hours and 5 characters with different builds and i just start to really get into the details and i discover many thing every day.
I have the opposite reaction. Real time with pause seems too chaotic for me compared to the slow methodical approach of turn based, is there a game that might switch my opinion around?
Nice video. :) I do miss your SoL game progress. It is no longer the same design philosophy. Oh well. :( Tip: Probably the most underrated Feat in the game is 'Alert'. It is so awesome for your entire party to go FIRST in every single combat and to NEVER be surprised. So much more powerful than a +2 to Ability or anything else. It is the first Feat I take during any play through. :) Tip+: Be sure to Bless your entire party (up-cast for 4 character bless) first round of combat. Have fun. :)
Yeah, I like to get immersed into a BG character's perspective. Being an immortal collectivist astral commando on a suicide mission from Queen Vlaakith the undisputed, for example... don't want to equip istik weapons or dress up like a kainyank, or have to care about teethlings for the xp. I wonder how long you will be able to replay the turn-basedness before you revert to your prior view?
When Cyanide made their first Blood Bowl game, they had two modes, real time and turn based (since it's based off a board game). When they made Blood Bowl 2, it was only turn based, because nobody played the real time version.
If Bg3 was real time with pause every fight would be done in seconds. I just did myrkul in 1.5 turns on honour mode because I pre-juiced my dual 6swordbard-4vattlemaster’s so much. That would be how long in real-time?
Interesting that as you said, playing it straight up without the Meta knowledge, it is tough. The first run through is therefore so much more at any level, than the subsequent runs. Because 2nd time around you have developed strategies, have an ide where the pitfalls are etc. And yet you can still struggle because you think it might be easier. I nearly didn't buy it because I am not a DnD gamer. But I was looking for something to fill my turn-based RPG itch. It seems that Larian have managed to find the magic potion for so many people.
I mostly have avoided turn-based games as well .... except for Blood Bowl 2, and Mordheim: City of the Damned. I have a soft spot for those two games -- but I recognize they both have a bit of learning curve for people new to them. They're also more manageable time-wise than a lot of open-ended and real-time games, especially MMO's, because they have finite matches or skirmishes that you can play as one-off games, or as parts of longer campaigns. Anyway, I'm going to give Baldur's Gate 3 a chance, as soon as I can get something to play it on. Looks fun!
In general any player who does not understand the game will consider it bad no matter what.. but it is necessary to be adventurous and try any type of game and give it enough time
Im enjoying the game and coming up with different ways to figure stuff out. I do play on Explorer mode because this is my first game like this. But im enjoying
I never was into these type of games as far as that top down look. But played DOS2 (never beat it) and was pleasantly surprised. So BG3 was a no brainer purchase for me. Especially how long they did the early access I was hoping we would finally get a full game on release. Even though they patched it up a lot over these months I assume a lot of bugs popped up once people had access to ACTS2 and 3
The secret sauce of turn based combat is variety of encounters, and not too many. RTWP often has way too many encounters, because the game would be way too short without throwing literally thousands of enemies at you, but a turn based game that just takes that formula and makes it turn based becomes a slog (this is why many JRPGs rub me really bad).
Their Divinity games are also very good and well worth a try. I love the consequences these games have and watching them play out as the games progress. Sometimes those consequences are predictable, and sometimes they very much are not. :D
I heard of Divinity Original sins so much but never wanted to play it. BG3 blowed my mind so much that I wanna get Divinity Original sins and 2 so bad.
I wonder if you would like the classic JRPG style of turn-based combat like old Final Fantasy. Have you played anything like that? Chrono Trigger is sort of a mix of real time with pause, and turn-based. Of course, these are mostly battle screens with limited movement as opposed to BG3 style freedom, so they're quite different experiences.
I played first time on explorer. I died on a few of the major boss fights a couple of times learning mechanics, but other than that it was a breeze, story first FTW
Hmmm… i personally play maynly turn based games… but BG3 has made it so well that it is a prodigy even for turn based based game. So definitely a good starting point to test if some one could like turn based games also. But a good game is a good game no matter what the style is!
I was hesitant to buy it too.. still haven’t played it but I’m downloading it now.. I remember playing a gladiator game a long time ago idk if anyone knows what I’m talking about but it was turn based and I loved it.. since then I haven’t played another one.. the only thing I’ve played close to turn based is the kotor games.. I know they are more like auto combat but it is pretty similar I think considering you select different attacks and don’t actually run around and have full control during combat.. anyone agree or am I reaching a little bit? I’m giving it a shot either way
Thanks I hope so.. also hoping my wife will want to play we love gaming together but she just doesn’t enjoy many other games ever since I introduced her to ARK lol 😂
Both of those are GREAT games in their own right. Also maybe try out Solasta; it's MUCH closer to Baldur's Gate 3 as it uses the same ruleset but from a different developer (Tactical Adventures), but OS1 and 2 are Larian's previous titles so you can get an idea of how their games play as well :) Lots of options!
I’m generally not opposed to turn-based, but I do find them kind of tedious. Especially with other people. I map my turns out 3-5 turns in advance and I don’t know what takes people so long to move a character. That said, my initial trepidation was about the click to move and camera movement/top down style. It can be disorienting for me and immersion breaking. Somehow BG3 is all of these things and pulled it off so well they aren’t complaints at all for me.
Yeah I hear what you're saying about Turn Based. I'm not one for Turn base either but I purchased BG3 because I like D&D and like the previous Baldur's Gate games too. I've yet to start playing it though. I've been so entrenched in other games for the last few years and they've always been bigger games that I lose myself in. The backlog I'm wrestling with on what to start even goes back to Witcher 3, then Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3 (among others). I've even got Elden Ring I'm a good way through and waiting for the expansion to come and I go back to ESO every once in a while. And then there's another TB game I've had since release but I haven't yet touched it to any degree and that's NeverWinter. Obviously each of these games are huge and all time sinks. I've paused playing Starfield as I've got some of the bugs that have hurt the enjoyment of playing, but I'll go back to once the bugs are sorted out. New IP and all you gotta cut them some slack. Now I think I'm just cog-jammed, can't make a decision on what to boot up or boot out.
I've played turn based for a long time, and while there are many good titles, there are by far more bad titles, especially if you start including mobile games. Could probably say that about most genres, but I can understand it putting people off. Which is sad because there are some great turn based games out there.
@@Renfail most of these ganes are good, but dated. So I strongly recomend trying X-com Enemy Unknow and them Enemy Within. Trust me on this one. The Ironman option is fantastic.
@Renfail I love d&d, and this game flew under my radar up until its official launch. Once I realized it was 5E in a video game, I was sold. After getting used to the controls, it's like second nature now. Im almost 400 hours in and I'm still learning new thing about the game and the controls.
I still think TBC is way too slow and boring, but despite that I have found myself enjoying dozens upon dozens of hours of BG3. I think that's a testament to how good the game really is. The characters, the story, and the genuine fun of this adventure with friends is all top notch
@@Renfail I'm definitely starting to enjoy it a bit the more I play. But I doubt turn base will ever be my favorite way to play a game. That's okay though
I've always preferred turn based strategy. At one point I disliked real time strategy a lot. XCOM vs. Command and Conquer was easy choice for me, even though I did enjoy the early C&C games. I do play Cyberpunk and faster paced games like Battlefield, also used to play Diablo a lot so I'm not only turn based enjoyer. I've played table top RPG from 1985 ish even though last few years in person gaming has been really absent. Earlier Baldur's Gate games were great because of the companions and their interaction with each other, I had never seen that before and not really since for years after them. But D&D is turn based and fits perfectly. Action D&D is also a thing but it feels forced.
And like you said, playing for fun means not researching the optimal way, min maxing... I'm no munchkin finding loopholes bugs or things my character couldn't possibly know beforehand. Guess it's silly to roleplay in a roleplaying game but that's why Honor and Tactician modes are there right.
Turn-based games have been treated pretty unfairly and many of the bigger industry names are to blame. Their used to be many successful turn-based franchises and I don't remember anyone ever complaining about them. But action games were easier to pitch to a casual majority audience so the old school Square-Enix and Bioware games just evaporated. People enjoy playing poker, chess and all sorts of other card/board games; extremely engaging for the players, but following as a spectator can feel hopeless without possessing certain knowledge.
Bruh, the definition of something being boring is that it is tedious or not interesting. You literally just described what something being boring entails lmao

It is indeed a great game, but a quick correction: It's depth and greatness has nothing to do with microtransactions or a lack thereof.
And yeah. This Boulders gate 3 seems a nicely advanced well done type of turn based game. Great story too, of course.
The story helped immensely
Fantastic video as always.
I actually had a different good experience with the game. I hardly ever finish games because I simply get bored by the end content.
However, BG3 had so much going on that I never really became bored and finished it. Which inspired me to go back and work on completing some other games which I was like
“Well, I 100% should have stuck this out to the end”
Nice :)
this is the content i crave
but fr glad it had that impression on you. i grew up playing a lot of turn based games and always really enjoyed the 'strategic' element to that kinda play style.
correct answer =)
same as me renfail, loved the old real time with pause in bg 2 and pillars of eternity, but bg 3, rogue trader and wasteland 3 are 3 quality turn based games
Indeed
Hell I still died on Explorer mode on a few of the boss fights even =P
@@Renfail I haven't tried explorer mode, but falling to your death is universal!
There are 2 kinds of people: 1) People who think Real-Time-With-Pause is good; and 2) People with correct opinions.
All kidding aside, really happy to see you going back & enjoying these great games.
lots of options these days
i love how party comp can shift the level of complexity and how important short vs long rests are. first play through short rests were king. fighter, swords bard/rogue, warlock, cleric. usually only long rested cause cleric ran out of spells/ ran out of short rests. turns out i missed out on so much camp events in my first run.
resting is key :) and camp rests!
It's tabletop at its very essence.
Keep up the great videos.
lots of side quests
I was playing crpg before it was cool.
Witcher 3 is a phenomenal game, but for many other reasons.
Left/Right on the thumbpad/d-pad to snap targets FTW :)
Nice view on this topic : ) One of the 1st turn based PC games remember playing and liking the story, was the Shadowrun series.
Nice
I played BG3 on the living room TV for my dad to see who doesn't play games at all and he loved it!
cool beans!
Cheers
Have fun!
i love turn based games since Fallout 1&2
nice!
I often find far more variety in turn based games then in action based game. Like how many action games are just built off the idea of timed I-framing attacks with dodge rolls. There's really only a limit number of ways to test someone's reflexes and dexterity.
To some degree that's fairly true.
Here's hopin'
I've never shied away from turn based games, but as I get older, I enjoy them even more. My anxiety and my crappy reflexes make action gaming harder these days haha.
fair point =P
Legendary Game!
lots of great games
I’m exactly the same boat. Didn’t like turn based, wasn’t interested in anything fantasy, especially D&D. Now, I’m flipping addicted
Glad you are having fun!
Have fun!
BG3 was the same for me. I never enjoyed turn-based games so I sat on this one for a bit. I bought it on a whim since I heard it was good and I was so happy it was fantastic!
Awesome
There's a great big world of games out there!
so happy it changed your mind... the sad truth is though that so many ppl simply have no effin clue how insanely good BG3 is .. how deep ,simple and complex at the same time , with 100's of hours replayability ... and im totally generalising here.. it's mostly close minded ppl with short attention spans, that do not like turn based games ( let the flaming begin ) 🙂 all the cod's, battlefield aso aso aso.. the instant gratification grps as i call them .... LOL i know im stretching it here, but thers some truth to my statement...
A great game tbs
Turn based couch co-op is a blast.
indeed!
I have to play pc for these types of games. Using a controller with that console version of the inventory would drive me nuts. Glad to see your enjoying the game.
Filters FTW; zero inventory management.
Turns out with pause mode it's just fine even for a turn-based enjoyer like me.
groovy
The world is what you make of it for sure
Im actually on the other side.
I HATE real time with pause and refuse to play any games where its the only option.
weird!
yea I got my friends on turn based as well. they were so use to say Pillars of Eternity where you could be in an encounter pause it and cast a spell or buff on all of your chars then unbuff and just murder the screen. They were not vibing with BG3 at first but now love having to watch things unfold.
PoE are such great games. Can't wait for Avowed.
@@Renfail yea PoE setting is sooo good when I saw Avowed I was just like wait I didn't know I needed this in my life.
absolutely@@lazylautrec6933
You don't have to kill the hag's "guards". You can sneak by, and they'll pop up in the end battle with the hag - but if you focus on the hag, take her down without killing the guards, you'll save them and the one says something about meeting in Baldur's Gate. Been a few months since I played it. There's also a way to save Minthara too if you want to (when the time comes, if you take the destroy the goblins route).
Missing the point
@@Renfail: Na, I got it - I was just pointing out all the ways you can complete this game (that change the story) and how you don't really see that in other games (and hoping its not a one and done for this way of game making).
Heyo o/ old DnD vet here too and am playing the game completely blind :).
I managed to get lucky with that fight on balanced, since I play Rogue / Ranger and tend to sneak everywhere, so I saw them beforehand :D. And managed to setup a little ambush, but it was not easy to win.
I would say the number 1 killer in dnd is Action economy. Close followed by goblins at lvl 1 xD.
part of the rules, part of the fun =)
Im so glad you gave this a try! Incredible game for sure. I do have to say, if i was playing dnd and was walking into a hags lair id definitely be trying to sneak around and be stratigical instead of just rushing in. Unless i was playing a barbarian of course haha
For the purposes of illustration ✨️
Literally the first thing that came out of my mouth when I went into turn based combat in bg3 is EWWWWW because I had much different expectations. But after putting like 600 hours into it I can say it makes combat so fun and engaging. So much strategy you can do and mechanics you can take advantage of, unlike other games with real time combat like Skyrim or Elden ring (which I also love)
Nice
lol.. So funny hearing everybody dying from not winning their death saving throws in Renfail's outro..
lol yep
I would recommend you to also try Gear tactics and Warhammer 40k: Chaos Gate - Demonhunters (more futuristic). Both of them are turn based RPG with great combat and unit customization...and decent storyline(chaos gate is better in terms of story)... the downside being that they do not have world exploration like BG3 or Divinity
see yeah I need the world exploration
Many of us from the OGG (Original Gaming Generation) grew up on turn-based combat. It was slow. But games made the combat challenging enough that if you went fast like today, it was just death. You had to think your strategy, tactics, and that brought a new level of excitement to the game.
to some degree, yep!
Glad to hear you like Turn-based games. They are a favourite of mine.
they have their merits :)
I grew up playing the first two games and I love the third one as well big time. The first two are different its a pause system they use works very well but they are much much much harder its based off 3.5 If i remember correctly amazing games. The third one plays pretty nuch like Divinity Sin 2 just more of everything. That is still an amazijg game to go back to play as well also looks amazing
fun times!
I've been a turn based gamer since i tried Civilization and Doom and Wolfenstein demos around the same time, and had no problem with Civilization, but i was horrible at the demo's even playing for over 15 hours! The only non turn based games i play are Minecraft and No Mans Sky!
nice :)
Implementation is key
A lot of ppl don't understand when their sense of cognitive ease simply needs enough time with something new to become familiar with it. It's that invisible sense of something being "meh" that is simply unfamiliar to you, which if given a chance you actually find to be great.
Learning curves ftw
I think I am going to do my second run with controller only. I played most of ACT1 with kb/m and ACT2 started using controller a small amount. Just need to finish ACT3!
I love it with the controller, even on the PC I prefer it.
Its cover based shooter like xcom
haven't played that version
I generally like all games, but over the years yeah, my tastes have changed for sure.
Now i have about 400 hours and 5 characters with different builds and i just start to really get into the details and i discover many thing every day.
have fun :)
I have the opposite reaction. Real time with pause seems too chaotic for me compared to the slow methodical approach of turn based, is there a game that might switch my opinion around?
Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2. Dragon Age: Origins.
Nice video. :)
I do miss your SoL game progress. It is no longer the same design philosophy. Oh well. :(
Tip: Probably the most underrated Feat in the game is 'Alert'. It is so awesome for your entire party to go FIRST in every single combat and to NEVER be surprised. So much more powerful than a +2 to Ability or anything else. It is the first Feat I take during any play through. :)
Tip+: Be sure to Bless your entire party (up-cast for 4 character bless) first round of combat.
Have fun. :)
Cheers
Yeah, I like to get immersed into a BG character's perspective. Being an immortal collectivist astral commando on a suicide mission from Queen Vlaakith the undisputed, for example... don't want to equip istik weapons or dress up like a kainyank, or have to care about teethlings for the xp.
I wonder how long you will be able to replay the turn-basedness before you revert to your prior view?
forever.
When Cyanide made their first Blood Bowl game, they had two modes, real time and turn based (since it's based off a board game). When they made Blood Bowl 2, it was only turn based, because nobody played the real time version.
interesting
If Bg3 was real time with pause every fight would be done in seconds. I just did myrkul in 1.5 turns on honour mode because I pre-juiced my dual 6swordbard-4vattlemaster’s so much. That would be how long in real-time?
yeah that's the exact way of playing that I don't get into as per the video :)
It's damn good
Apparently baldurs gate 3 changed a lot of gamers lives 😂 and it will change my life when the physical deluxe edition comes out
Have fun!
I had exactly the same mindset about turned based games, I have been converted thanks to BG3
Praise Larian.
Everything in Balders Gate is meaningful snd has purpose, thats what makes it a great game paired with graphics and story.
Yep!
Looks fun!
It's a blast
In general any player who does not understand the game will consider it bad no matter what.. but it is necessary to be adventurous and try any type of game and give it enough time
Perhaps!
I feel like after playing bg3 i can't go back to any TBC like FF, FE, Persona, etc
I have no problems because I love all games
Xcom 2 got me to turn based. It doesn't need any intro. One of the turn based games with tons of other stuff to it. One of the goats
cool
Im enjoying the game and coming up with different ways to figure stuff out. I do play on Explorer mode because this is my first game like this. But im enjoying
I went explorer mode my first time through, it was great.
I never was into these type of games as far as that top down look. But played DOS2 (never beat it) and was pleasantly surprised. So BG3 was a no brainer purchase for me. Especially how long they did the early access I was hoping we would finally get a full game on release. Even though they patched it up a lot over these months I assume a lot of bugs popped up once people had access to ACTS2 and 3
Zero bugs on my end, so never assume.
The secret sauce of turn based combat is variety of encounters, and not too many. RTWP often has way too many encounters, because the game would be way too short without throwing literally thousands of enemies at you, but a turn based game that just takes that formula and makes it turn based becomes a slog (this is why many JRPGs rub me really bad).
yeah I don't really care for JRPGs for that reason.
Their Divinity games are also very good and well worth a try. I love the consequences these games have and watching them play out as the games progress. Sometimes those consequences are predictable, and sometimes they very much are not. :D
They can be fun indeed
I heard of Divinity Original sins so much but never wanted to play it. BG3 blowed my mind so much that I wanna get Divinity Original sins and 2 so bad.
get on it :) They are good games.
I have a hard time with those styles of games, mostly because I'm not a big fan of their art style and the uwu factor
If you would like to experiment with another great turn based that has deep strategy, take a look at xcom 1/2/Chimera squad
groovy
I Think larian turn based is just special for me. already started in Divinity Original Sin
Cool
New to the channel. Not sure if you have tried it but you should try xcom 2 for the intense tactical element. Prettry good startegic elements as well.
it's a classic
How easy is explorer dif guys? I've never played turn based before
I played first time on explorer. I died on a few of the major boss fights a couple of times learning mechanics, but other than that it was a breeze, story first FTW
I yhink you're ready for the Tales of Maj'Ejal
We'll see
Hmmm… i personally play maynly turn based games… but BG3 has made it so well that it is a prodigy even for turn based based game. So definitely a good starting point to test if some one could like turn based games also.
But a good game is a good game no matter what the style is!
Good games are good no matter what, indeed.
I’m giving it a shot either way
You'll have a blast.
Thanks I hope so.. also hoping my wife will want to play we love gaming together but she just doesn’t enjoy many other games ever since I introduced her to ARK lol 😂
I just bought divinity original sin 2 on sale to try out turned based game before I drop money on baldurs gate 3 in case I don’t like it
Both of those are GREAT games in their own right. Also maybe try out Solasta; it's MUCH closer to Baldur's Gate 3 as it uses the same ruleset but from a different developer (Tactical Adventures), but OS1 and 2 are Larian's previous titles so you can get an idea of how their games play as well :) Lots of options!
i can see the bloodless showing
Not following
So cool!
yep!
Enjoy
You should also give XCOM and BattleTech a try.
If I have time :)
hobo santa has seen the light
yeah not really
Lots of games to play.

I've played turn based for a long time, and while there are many good titles, there are by far more bad titles, especially if you start including mobile games. Could probably say that about most genres, but I can understand it putting people off. Which is sad because there are some great turn based games out there.
I think it's less about good versus bad and more about personal taste
My man, have you played X-com? Specially the last ones?

@@Renfail oh those must have been bad games.

I still think TBC is way too slow and boring, but despite that I have found myself enjoying dozens upon dozens of hours of BG3. I think that's a testament to how good the game really is. The characters, the story, and the genuine fun of this adventure with friends is all top notch
It's a mindset more than anything else. Hopefully you'll get over it like I did :)
@@Renfail I'm definitely starting to enjoy it a bit the more I play. But I doubt turn base will ever be my favorite way to play a game. That's okay though
doesn't have to be a favorite (it's not mine) as long as it's included :)@@Hylian_Glitchmobber
Lots of ways for people to play is the key; but also, tastes change, refine over the years.
Nice
So nice
My favorite games by far are turn based
cool!
Hey buddy, try the next Yakuza in January
My January and Febuary are already full
@Renfail if you get the chance another turn based game, very goofy and serious
Turn-based games have been treated pretty unfairly and many of the bigger industry names are to blame. Their used to be many successful turn-based franchises and I don't remember anyone ever complaining about them. But action games were easier to pitch to a casual majority audience so the old school Square-Enix and Bioware games just evaporated. People enjoy playing poker, chess and all sorts of other card/board games; extremely engaging for the players, but following as a spectator can feel hopeless without possessing certain knowledge.
Well to be fair action RPGs are quicker and easier to play and many CRPGs feel overwhelming to the average player.
That is no such thing as boring, just the thing not interesting enough to lure you in.
Tastes vary for sure
Bruh, the definition of something being boring is that it is tedious or not interesting. You literally just described what something being boring entails lmao
