- Do you know how to attach a bookshelf to the wall? Because of their height, for safety reasons bookshelves and all bulky furniture should be secured to the wall. They usually come equipped with wall-mounting hardware to keep them from tipping over.
In my film I attached Ikea Billy bookshelf to the plasterboard wall but this method will also work for other types of furniture.
Different wall material requires different types of fixing devices so double check what is suitable for the walls in your home.
If you need a step-by-step tutorial on how to assemble Billy bookcase check my video: • Ikea Micke add on unit...

This was very helpful! Can you please tell me what kind of hardware went into the wall? It would be great if you could add a link to it in the description as well. Thanks for sharing!
I used Expanding Bolt Cavity Fixing for plasterboard. For full wall e.g. made of brick there are other fixings:

Y'know what could've been even more helpful? 🙄 if he actually gave verbal instructions!!!
@@k-nemo I was able ot install my bookshelf successfully over a staircase without work. Thank you again!
Thanks ! But now this music is haunting me and devore my soul.
Soory 😕
It would be best not to place the wall fixing directly above the plug socket as there is a risk of drilling through the power cable that could drop vertically within the wall from the ceiling to the socket.
Actually if the plug away from the stud, it is safe, cause the cable to to attach to the stud if go vertical
Super helpful-thank you!!
So glad! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for this video! We are also looking to have the Billy bookcase (with glass doors) mounted and there is a gap between the wall and the bookcase due to our baseboard. Do we need to have that little wooden piece attached at the back like you did, or can we get away without those and still mount it with a gap between the bookshelf and the wall? Thanks!
You don't need a wooden piece. It can adhere to the wall.
@@k-nemo Thank you for responding even when the video is over a year old! Appreciate it :)
@@jamesjung20 Also quite easy to just saw a notch along the bottom back of each side board so you can scoot the bookcase all the way against the wall and not have the gap. Easier than mounting extra stops to the back of the unit.
This is exactly the bookshelf that I’m trying to attach to my wall. I am not handy at all and need to buy a drill for this, so can I ask what kind of drill you would recommend for a beginner to do this? Do I need to use a stud finder before attaching it to the wall?
The drill must be the size of plug, there are many kinds of fixings available. Buy fixing first and then look for the drill.
You don't need a stud finder but there is always a risk that you'll drill through a pipe or cable. Never drill near the socket.
One that goes round and around
Thanks for the video. What's the name of the bracket you use?
Ask in hardware store
I’m not very handy, so a little explanation of each step would have been helpful. Thank you though.
Sorry about that. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I still don’t understand how the nail doesn’t go thru the top shelf
It’s measured to be short enough where it won’t puncture all the way through
Does anyone actually scan their walls for wiring before drilling?
Yes:

i dont have space in upper side of my wardrobe to put screws, can i mount the metal plate on the side board?
Yes
3:42 how will u know when to stop driving the screw at this stage?
3:42?
I have experience using these anchors.
I’m trying to secure ikea bookcase into a stud, so can i ask you what type of screw (wood, drywall, deck..)and screw size i should i use? Thanks alot.
For a wooden stud I would recomend screw for wood. It should go about minimum 3-4 cm into the wood
What size of hole/drill bit did you use for the wall bracket?
I used 11mm. This is the recommended size for such a fixing.
Good vid. What's the name of the tool you use to drill the hole for the plug sockets? Cheers
Thanks for watching. the tool is called 'Multi set deluxe all rounder'. Mine is Bosch PMF 180E
Wtf was that wall drilling 🤣 you drifted all over the wall before allowing the drill to dictate where to go. You’ve either gotta pilot or start slow
Waste of time
It looks like this sometimes, but it's a good practice to attached furniture to the wall, particularly when you have small children at home. Accidents might happen.
Worth the investment. In best scenario, an accident will make you change your floor and I don’t want to mention the worst one.
@@pacersgo Thanks, it's true
