Well I have to say I never considered that llamas could be a viable support class but you're right, they've got a solid matchup vs wolves and are immune to [Infatuation]
Meh, it turned out it is just a completely normal wolf really Scientists testing the wolf said when it arrived they were confused with the statements that is was a weird, wolf-like animal, since it was just a normal looking wolf. The ears seemed bigger, the arms and paws smaller, but it was because of how the photos were taken. They said it was a normal, 2-3 years old female, and that's it lmao
I heard Obama too and the way Hank said it sent me into hyena style laughter. Add to that,I also have Hank’s Obama’s Llama song in my head. Therefore,my hyena laugh continues.

I think sometimes they want to breed the dogs so they don't spay or neuter. Also maybe male dogs are more aggressive when not neutered and they want to maintain that.
8:14 Hank, I just love how incredibly expressive (and, almost.. disconcerting?) *your* eyes got when talking about wolf eyes. As always, you're a treasure 😁
My dog was 1/4th wolf, it was really interesting because even after only having 1/4th wolf in him he would still howl, and he had the eyes that Hank was talking about where you could see him thinking. He would also contemplate like sunsets and the ocean and stuff, like just sit and watch them.
I abso-fucking-loutely love it when Hank cusses 😁😂. He's always either fundraising so he can continue teaching millions of kids (and adults) for free, or fundraising for really amazing causes and giving us updates to see the good coming from our donations, or he's doing something else incredibly wholesome. Hank & John have donated so much of their own money to their own causes because they actually believe in making the world a better place, and these guys seem so damn perfect.... Then I clicked on the video and Hank is talking about llama's will definitely never fuck a wolf, but a sheep dog might fuck a wolf and then we have wolf dogs and they can fuck and reproduce. But not a llama.
These are genuinely the most enjoyable videos I have watched in a long time. It's like watching myself ramble about something, except something i don't already know about, and it's flipping amazing. Both hilarious and informative to an insane extent, where the fact that it is informal only adds to the awesome. I don't think you are even capable of forgetting to be awesome, Hank, but i will continue spreading around the reminder. #DFTBA
For those that don't know, wolf dogs are generally not a good idea. When you breed a wolf with a dog it's basically a dice-roll as to how much of the characteristics of each you get. You can get a wolf-looking canine that acts like a dog, but you can also get a dog-looking canine that acts like a dangerously untame wolf, and everything in between. Bottom line, it's best for everyone involved if you don't encourage breeding these two animals.
We have the same thing with Dingos. However a "little" bit of dingo in the mix is a good thing. so Quarter breed Dingos are generally smarter than normal dogs - but still dog-like enough to be fun to hang out with.
Wolf dog cross is a very bad idea..cute when young..wolf ish as they grow...ask your vet..or the dnr..wild animals are wild animals..keep them in the national parks..in the quiet corners.
I remember seeing something about foxes being bred- only the most docile and horrendously wild. They found a gene responsible for adrenaline made them wild, and in so many generations, the more docile fox’s coats started to turn white.
I'm 99% sure they're not legal where I am for that reason and in many places you need licenses to keep them. They don't deserve to die horribly but they should not be bred and should only be kept by trained individuals who know what they're doing.
It’s actually pretty common for hybrid offspring to be larger than the parents! It’s called “hybrid vigor,” and a great example of this are ligers. This gal turned out to be a grey wolf with unusual features, but not a hybrid or a coyote! I came back to this because I remember this video and Chris’s comment on a semi-regular basis and I was eating lunch. So hi from 2020, I wish this were the weirdest part of the yea.
I can’t remember who said it, I think it was Jack London, but some famous writer said that the eyes of wolves are the most similar to the eyes of humans, and when we look at them, we see something of ourselves in their cunning and ruthlessness and intelligence. Which I think is too complimentary to humans, but it is true that the eyes are very unnerving and mysterious.
There's an intelligence behind them. Of which they are definitely sizing you up, and calculating how hard it would be to kill you and if they could get away with it.
anecdotally, i may or may not have smoked too much weed and been very weirded out by my friends' dogs' eye contact. i was very convinced there were basically little people brains behind those eyes
As someone who actually has met a semi-domesticated wolfdog up close (in a sex-toy shop ... don't ask, it's a Story), I can testify they are big mofos. She stood about a meter at the shoulder and was roughly the same size as an Irish wolfhound (which I've also met up close). She politely sniffed me, and I politely let her, and gave her a skritch behind the ears which she seemed to enjoy. For all that, I would NOT have wanted to meet her without her owner around to remind her of her manners.
Theyre bred for pets around here, with small percentage ofc. 10-15% wolf. I can see the benefits that could benefit dogs health-wise, but it needs to be done carefully and bred resposibly
Hank really is a great storyteller. I should be thinking "oh the poor wolf-dog" but instead I'm thinking of wolf/llama dynamics. Yes to more of these random videos!
i’m honestly living for these like rambly hand vids and they’re always such a surprise i LOVE this also you eventually losing the polite “do it” language and just being like “a wolf is not gonna fuck a llama” is absolutely hilarious

I heard about a chihuahua and a big dog doing the doggy do and the chihuahua was the dad. He could stand on something and get up in there where a big male dog and a tiny female dog, that's just not happening. So I guess it depends on how big the participants were.
Sadly it won't show much, if it IS a wolf/dog. Their DNA is too similar to have any noticeable difference. Most wolf/dog sanctuaries use phenotypes to assess the animals
It came back canis lupus, grey wolf. No evidence of hybridization, it was just young and had some physical variance to what we usually think of as wolves

"Chewpacapra is a goat like thing" As a cryptid nerd I gotta correct you buddy! Chewpacabra's feed on goats, the name meaning "goat sucker." Most folks report the chewpacabra as looking like a dog with really bad mange, which is what most folks think the chewpacabra is.
Chupacabra's were originally described as a reptilian cross between Grey Aliens and Kangaroos, the only reason people describe them as "dog like" is because people who don't know anything about them just started to call random mangey wolves and coyotes they came across as "chupacabara's"
Hey Hank... Great video and all... Interested in those particulars about the "Not-wolf" thing, too... I mean, gigantism is always a possibility in any species (as far as I know)... AND could there maybe (wishful thinking) be some kind of evolutionary throw-back to the "Dog-bear"??? Oh... BUT I wondered... Since you make mention of the "protection llamas" and the (at least) occasional use of species other than dogs for protecting herds, have you NOT heard about ranchers employing donkeys? Around here (okay, laugh... I live in Tennessee) even cattle ranchers are known to keep donkeys to mingle about the herds and watch for predators. Apparently, they're not only better at noticing predators than cattle (don't know with sheep) but they're sure-footed (good in mountains) AND really aggressive toward "strangers"... meaning they'll raise all manners of hell if something (or someone?) comes around to disturb the herd. Finally, I've been kicked by a llama (once upon a time)... AND I'd take another kick from a llama 1000 to 1 again over risking a kick from an angry donkey. SO... just wondering if that (donkey guard practice) was a thing in Montana (that you've heard)... ;o)
There's something about this post(?)(Is that the right word?) that's intensely beautiful and awesome. I think it's one part that it feel much less scripted than usual, and one part the sheer awe-inspired terror/incredulity that you have for the wolf-dog. The wolf-dog is, like, BIG. Wolves are REALLY BIG. I've always liked wolves, I think wolves are great, I've never watched something that made me feel apprehensive about wolves before this. That's awesome. And of course there's one part sheer curious geekery. It's fun and cool to look up things on the fly. And then there's the Llama.
Maybe it's like 3/4th wolf. 1st gen wolf-dog did the do with a regular wolf. So it'd be bigger than a usual wolf-dog but still different enough to not look like a regular wolf.
What if, instead of having one guard llama, you have multiple guard llamas? So if the wolf does kill the first llama, it still has to fight 2 or 3 more before it can get to the sheep. That would be more of an upfront investment than buying one llama, but you could get a more effective defence system out of it, without the wolfdog issue.
And I would have to guess that if a wolf has to deal with more than one llama at the same time, it's going to get harassed back into the wilderness before it does much damage to any of the llamas.
Hank left it out of the video but depending on the size of the flock to be guarded farmers usually have multiple guard animals, and often of different breeds for maximum protection.
Fair enough question... I would posit, that somewhere in the 25-30% territory, you're no longer just using the llamas for sheep protection. Llamas and alpacas are also raised for some textiles... Alpacas particularly for their softer hairs... AND before you freak right out, they're generally sheered exactly like the sheep for wool... With highly skilled sheerers and good equipment, a fleece is very much the same principle from one to the next... Along with Agilemind up there, the ranchers I've known have employed Donkeys as protection animals... I'm actually kind of surprised this wasn't mentioned either directly in the vid' nor anywhere in the Comments that I've looked... Donkeys are particularly aggressive against predators, along with being generally willful and kind of a pain in the ass to domesticate for personalized purposes... At the same time, once you manage to befriend a Donkey, you've got a pretty damn stalwart friend. They have been known to run themselves to death to please their chosen masters... so there's that. I've been kicked and spat at by llamas... AND I was threatened by a donkey once... I backed straight down from the donkey, though... that's a whole lotta "nope". ;o)
Anyone trying to successfully use LLAMAS against WOLVES is going to be very disappointed. If a wolf is hungry, a llama is definitely going to be a good snack, and no llama would be stupid enough to try to fight a wolf. Llamas are not guard animals, and I don't know why the myth that they are is so prevalent
guard dogs are usually raised with the sheep so they view them as family/pack. they are often more attached to the sheep than their owner. which can be tricky if the dog doesn't view the owner as the parent/leader of the whole flock+dog. know a lady in my area who raises dairy goats and has a guard dog. the dog really only responds to her. she doesn't let other people be around him much in case he views them as a threat to his goat family.
Don't take this the wrong way Hank, it comes from someone easily old enough to be your Grandma...but...you have an incredibly beautiful smile. Use it often.
It amuses me to realize that someone at Complexly has the job of creating the socks they sell each month, and I *know* they already have the iconography available to make "Don't F a Llama" socks. #🚫
@Hankschannel - You cursing at the end sets my literal "French the Llama" figure alive. I grabbed it and played with my kitt-ehs for an hour. I love the adult convos and "language" to match. F***king, THANK YOU~!
The fact that a sheep dog does not get its name the same way as a wolf dog is a very important piece of information that I wish you had included to spare me the 7 seconds I actually considered it.
I'm so much more into this video because you're eating Subway. For some reason it's making the whole sheep dog thing like an old fashion scary story! Good times.
5;09 IDK about the US but in the UK sheep dogs are expensive. You wouldn't let a mother sheepdog have their puppies out in an open field, dogs prefer somewhere sheltered anyhow. Most farmers I know either have a room in their house for the dogs or they have basically a cennal. Mostly to protect the sheepdogs from people rather then animals. Cus rural crime is super common and thieves will use chemicals to attack a dog. So many farmers opt to protect their dogs by putting them indoors. Also dog mother's prefer to give birth in a "den" like environment. Somewhere they feel it's dark, sheltered and warm.
Well I have to say I never considered that llamas could be a viable support class but you're right, they've got a solid matchup vs wolves and are immune to [Infatuation]

It seems statistically and fiscally unlikely the farmer would accidentally have the correct bullets loaded to take down a weirwolf.
David Smith people collect weird things, you never know.
Do you mean a weirdwolf?
No, of course the farmer would not have the right bullet.
A decepticon is not going down that easily.
That is a practical counterpoint that I did not consider because I disregarded the potential of a werewolf.

At what ratio of guard llamas to sheep do you stop being a sheep rancher and become a sheep and llama rancher? :)
I like this kind of video because it feels like a friend just telling you a fun story over lunch.
Don’t french a Llama? But... John told me it’s okay D:
Saphira You're amazing.
Saphira good ass job
Frenching the llama is acceptable. Anything beyond that is frowned upon.
+
It's okay as long as you're not a wolf.
this is by far the BEST Hank video I have ever seen. Thank you, Hank
guard dogs are usually raised with the sheep so they view them as family/pack. they are often more attached to the sheep than their owner. which can be tricky if the dog doesn't view the owner as the parent/leader of the whole flock+dog. know a lady in my area who raises dairy goats and has a guard dog. the dog really only responds to her. she doesn't let other people be around him much in case he views them as a threat to his goat family.
Thank you, Hank. Have been very much appreciating hankschannel. 10/10 would have lunch time stories with you again.
Emily form the brain scoop was talking about coyote wolf hybrids a while ago. Any chance of that?
Don't take this the wrong way Hank, it comes from someone easily old enough to be your Grandma...but...you have an incredibly beautiful smile. Use it often.
Hank, my lunch break ends in eight minutes. How can you do this to me. 😂 (Just kidding, I’ll add to my watch later.)
It amuses me to realize that someone at Complexly has the job of creating the socks they sell each month, and I *know* they already have the iconography available to make "Don't F a Llama" socks. #🚫
It’s funny to hear cuss words come out of Hank’s sweet innocent face
IKR!?
I had to pause the video multiple times to collect myself. Listening to Hank curse is weirder than hearing any of my old school teachers curse was.
I love it though! Haha
@@flowersandeverythingelse2369 dude I replayed it
@Hankschannel - You cursing at the end sets my literal "French the Llama" figure alive. I grabbed it and played with my kitt-ehs for an hour. I love the adult convos and "language" to match. F***king, THANK YOU~!
I assumed it was a particularly nasty looking coywolf. I really liked Emily Graslie's video on coywolves from a while ago.
Oh my god!!! 😂😂😂 I have been watching you for years and I have always loved your content. But this was so entertaining! Thank you. I literally LOLed.
Social eating and silent social burping
i love how you can see people rewinding the video to hear him curse again
Maybe it's the canine version of a Liger, which lacks the "stop growing" attribute. Just keeps getting bigger.
The fact that a sheep dog does not get its name the same way as a wolf dog is a very important piece of information that I wish you had included to spare me the 7 seconds I actually considered it.
[Insert *don't French the llama* joke here]
Please don't stop doing these videos. I love the extra content and how casual the conversation is.
I took this way too seriously and sat there for a bit too long wondering if I was pro-dog or pro-llama ...
lol these random Hank vids are so funny! that wolf-dog looks like a BEAST though!
I'm so much more into this video because you're eating Subway. For some reason it's making the whole sheep dog thing like an old fashion scary story! Good times.
This lunch convo was a damn delight. Thanks, Hank.
Subways are still pretty successful where I live
I’m really enjoying these extra videos you’re putting out.
Nearly finished that report, just took a break to watch this video about a wolf-dog monster.
I have something to talk about at work at my vet clinic today. Thank you very much
Would the wolf at least.... french the lama?
