Runaway peas are more easily referred to just as escapeas.
loll
One of my grandmas favourite jokes
Oh yes
+
+ Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I did the math. Those peas should give you enough energy to watch approximately 26 seconds of television. If you can harvest that many peas like 7 more times that'd be roughly enough energy to watch this video!
I'm concerned this garden might not be able to feed me and my entire family on its own. TIME TO EXPAND THE GARDEN. -John
vlogbrothers sums up gardening pretty well. First you grow 1 plant. And then.... where did my yard go. Who put this jungle here. Oh wait, me, and it's delicious.
The most upsetting part is that the eight peas *definitely* do not contribute enough energy to cover the amount expended in their growth/harvest/consumption. Which mean's you'll be at a deficit for quite a while unless you expand fast!
Nothing as nice as some veggies in the flower garden. Tomatoes are quite nice to look at, especially cherry tomatoes, I'd reckon. And onions can have nice flowers, too. Or if you have peas grow on a pergola with other flowers. Away with borders between the vegetable and the ornamental garden!
+
This is good but if you want to hit Trending you need to change title to:
5 cent peas vs 2,500 cent peas
+
schmoyoho and then when doing the video make sure that there is a pea of intermediate size range
+
I feel like Hank should write a song called 'The Tragedy of the Ninth Pea'
Hank only writes sins not tragedies..
With a video talking about 8 peas in the title, I'm filled with dreadful curiosity as I await to see what happens. (Haven't gotten to the tragedy yet.)
Oh that's what happens. 😆 Not too much of a tragedy.
I'm going to stand by 'tragedy'. it never gets to fulfil its true pea-tential.
What about the tenth pea that was lost in the garden?
Now I kinda want every vlogger I watch to reach his forties so I can consume more of this adorable content
Yes, between John's last few videos and especially Hank's frankly bizarre recent contributions to Hankschannel, I think post-relevance (sorry) Green brothers are more entertaining than they've been in years.
Lol, I feel like it's totally fitting. They've mentioned their demographics aging before, and lately it's apparent that we are all growing up, them included. I like it. It's life.
Álvaro Lopes ++
Robert Baillargeon they should retire from all their jobs and make a gardening channel called ploughbrothers or something
it's relaxing bc im a teenager and not really in their demographic anymore and all of the other youtubers i watch are either "HEY WHATS UP YOU GUYS" or "look at these cats" so it's nice to see that vlogbrothers is still unique and even though both vlogbrothers are older their content is still changing
those were the best 3:31 minutes of my week :D thanks a lot for the luxury pea experience, john
Thanks! (Hope your week only improves from here!) -John
+
if those 3:31 minutes were the best in your life, then you need to go to the Ritz Carlton in Moscow, Alledgedly
two minutes in and I'm very worried about why you keep talking about nine peas but the title says eight peas
oh wait I got there just kidding it wasn't all that dramatic
Wait for it, Autumn! -John
+
It was a brilliant bit of foreshadowing
Huh. RUclips is telling me that your reply was posted four minutes before your comment. Don't know if I've ever noticed that before :P
i can't tell if he made this video to recommend gardening or just for that pun at the end
Xidnaf Gentle reminder that us fans are happy you're taking a step back from doing your own videos, but that we do miss you and hope you're doing well. (:
He made it because it was Tuesday and time for pea
puns.
Hey you're that guy who does the things! Love your things.
I think he needed to make all his work on the garden worth it. The neighborhood deer got a lot more peas than he did. Lol
Hi Xidnaf
This feels like a Hank video lol
T1J ! Love your content and that you also enjoy the brothers. ❤️
I was thinking that too
T1J Agreed!
right?!
+
Me: Sorry, I’m too busy do anything today.
Also Me: *spends three minutes and thirty one seconds watching John Green harvest, prepare, and consume eight peas*
A lot of dramatic tension created when you said you had "nine peas" but the title says "eight peas." WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE NINTH PEA? Only time will tell. Must watch until the end.
+
+
I've seen your comment on literally every single RUclips video I've watched today...
Skip to 2:20 to kill the tension, though without prior information, it's not as helpful.
++
You had esca-peas!
That's what my family calls them :D
WHY DO THE GOOD PEAS ALWAYS RUN AWAY 🎶
that's not going to be in my head all day now
John, besides being a vlogger and an author, you're now also a song writer.
Merel +++
Was this to the tune of Daya's "Hide Away"?
+Merel John's been a songwriter since the old days. Does no-one remember his classic 2007 hit, Nanny Nanny Rich Kid?
THIS! This is what RUclips should be! I'm about to cry with joy at the wonderfulness of this video.
Brynley Louise can you elaborate?? I got the sense that he was making this metaphor (analogy?) but I can't put all the pieces together!
Leah H Honesty I didn't pick up on any metaphors or analogies, I just thought this was a really silly and fun video that was enthusiastically and creatively presented. It reminds me of old school RUclips videos. I guess we could say that it's about appreciating the small things in life though if we really wanted to look into it.
+
Aaaaand this has been.... A Misunderstanding!
Finally a recipe I can actually follow
SuperSamStuff - LOL!
+
I think you mean reciPEA
+
I just like really enjoyed this video
Thanks, Melanie! -John
I feel a little bit like Richard Dreyfus in "Close Encounters of The Third Kind." Before his terrified children he anounces that "This means something."
+
vlogbrothers I cry now 😭💛
I just like really enjoyed this comment
Every time John uploads I play a game of “is the title something clever, well informed, and deep or just what it says it is?”
+
+
+
And sometimes it is both!

What happened to the John Green who hated the very idea of outdoors?
One of the weird things about making videos for 12 years is that past versions of yourself are as available as present versions of yourself. This can be dispiriting, because one always finds their past selves to be a bit cringey in one way or another. But it can also be encouraging, because you realize that adulthood is not, like, a form of death. When I was younger I sort of thought of adulthood as stasis--you spend the first, say, 28 years of your life becoming the person you will be, and then you live as that person until you die. But in fact, no! You keep changing! You think outside is dumb and that working outside is a waste of one's precious life, but then you find that being outside is helpful to you, and that you want to acquire some of the skills that your former self was so quick to dismiss. I'm sure future me will find current me as cringey as I find aspects of 2009 me--which is good news indeed. :) -John
John
Speaking as a 29 year old mother of two. This really helped me today- things change. People change.
Hairstyles change. Interest Rates fluctuate.
I like outdoors John. To be fair, I also liked indoors John.
vlogbrothers one of the most meaningful, profound bits of insight/advice I have ever heard, buried in the response of a RUclips comment thread.
this is art

I'm grateful for this video.
the rest of youtube is all WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I TRY TO FLY OVER THE GRAND CANYON ON A DRONE??? and vlogbrothers is calmly over here like How to Cook Eight Peas

First I was like "what the f*** is this? Is this what YT had come to now?" after much internal debate that was longer than this video I stepped in to took one for the team and the first thing I saw was that there were 9 peas... Great what happened to the 9th pea, I was pissed and my finger was hovering over the dislike button until the moment I noticed something different... John was treating the peas equally, he did not discriminated just because they cost more to grew but rather he educated them, a tear wiped my cheek as I turned around my mindset making the dislike button a like button and it was at that time I transcended Humanity and had an overwhelming sense of enlightenment. This really made me open my still open eyes.
I am happy for those peas.
I really love the way John lets his enthusiasm about gardening and afc wimbeldon show proudly. Nothing is better for the heart than a being a part of a great fandom. thats actually something i have learned from nerdfighteria ^.^
+
That's some good Brotherhood 2.0 content right there
John's singing. John's singing includes some decently and poorly executed puns. It is at times melodious and generally stays in key. John's voice allows us to expirience the same voice we know and love in a different way, and that familiarity is comforting and warm. Listening to John sing about his humble eight peas gives us a sense of intimacy as we are drawn into his world. John's voice like the voice of every person is unique, which makes his act of singing one that is brave for him and special for us.
I give it four stars.
+
Bree Bell hey what song is he singing at 00:38 seconds, "why do the good peas always runaway runaway"?
I too want a new episode of "The Anthropocene Reviewed."
I don't know the actual title, but the real lyrics are "where do the good boys go to hideaway"
+
I love that he boiled them in a measuring cup
John, since you like strange German words so much I recommend looking up the term "Erbsenzähler", which is German for "pea counter."
And Schrebergarten. He'd love one.
+Jesus Gonzalez I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe he would find a Schrebergarten too spiessig. Maybe he would make it some private hipster thing. I'm afraid we'll never know.
Marie Lastname I am German but I didn't even thought about Erbsenzähler, it fits soooo perfectly
Not gonna lie, this was the video I needed today.
I love your excitement!!! Also I love that you broke your no singing rule (multiple times!)!
Why was this so entertaining?!?! 😂😂😂👍🍷
+
I expected this video to be a metaphor or something, but it’s literally about cooking 8 peas😂😂
Dare I say, THE BEST VLOGBROTHERS VIDEO YET!
… but seriously John's videos lately have been of very high quality.
“...given your peas ‘the talk’....”. Thanks John, for treating peas as the conscious beings they are.
LOVE OF PLANTS 🌻 are they? I'm curious about the research. Got any links to studies?
this sounds potentially problematic for the vegetarians
secretsxdontxmake - A good and easy place to start is a playlist of videos that I have on my channel titled, ‘Plant Consciousness ‘. I would suggest the Susanne Simard and / or the Stefano Mancusco talks.

LOVE OF PLANTS 🌻 do you still consume plants? Thanks for the recommendations
I enjoyed this video SO. MUCH. My face hurts from smiling. Will be saving this one for a rainy day. So happy for you and your garden. :’)
I was waiting for this video to turn into an analytical satire/political commentary but this is a good break!! 😂😂

I think this may be my new favorite Vlogbrother’s video.

This was a top quality Vlogbrothers video. Definitely one of my favorites of John! I laughed so hard at "If you want to have a luxury pea experience" and was just genuinely smiling the entire time.
I finished turtles all the way down for the second time!! it's just pure genius!!
🐢
Thank you! :) -John
Turtles are green. Peas are green...
Turtle peas!
I guess you could say it was.... apPEAling
Ashley Flores you’re everything I wish I could pea
So for a long time we had a "garden" this patch of land behind our house, and only contained well-groomed weeds. We had one pot indoors with two green leaves in it, and (after it died 5 years after we got it) we realized it was an orchid that never bloomed because we mistreated it so much.
After my dad retired and mom/dad reorganized our lives(we now save our shower water in buckets), we has a flourishing REAL garden! We grew so many peppers last year we had to dry them all! We made Christmas wreaths out of the peppers and gave them as gifts!
The pea mustache. A classic. Can we get that on a shirt in the same vein as Pizza John? Or maybe just one with the shot of you with a single pea in your right nostril?
Peazza John
That would be lovely! Peas-a-John
++ !
These videos have taken quite a turn in mood from hank rambling semicoherently to john cooking eight peas, and I'm so here for it
FINALLY!!! John is answering the important questions in life! 😉
This is hands down some of the most wholesome content I have ever experienced
I am now SUPER into my garden (which feels like aging prematurely at 28, but I'm so happy that I don't care) and I haven't harvested anything from it yet this year. It went from "snow" to "heatwave with thunderstorms" here bafflingly quickly and I think my garden is confused, including my peas. However, I have two nearly-ready strawberries on my plant and I am hoping to have a luxury strawberry breakfast tomorrow!
Also, I will watch any and all gardening content that you want to put on RUclips, because it turns out to be the only thing that I love nearly as much as reading.
I'm not even kidding, this is literally me. I suspect strawberry #1 might be done by this evening, and will probably split it with my husband for dessert.
I just want to say that this is the quality content I subscribed for. Thank you, and have a good day.
I was gonna be mad about the clickbait because it said eight peas but you had nine but then it resolved itself.
I have been a Nerdfighter and have been watching vlogbrothers videos for many years. I have never commented on a youtube video before. But this is literally so good and so pure that it has compelled me to comment for the first time. This is the content I LIVE FOR thank you John.
I think they sell luxury pea experiences at the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow.
I hear they really massage the peas there. -John
herbaceous and salacious ;)

I actually started cackling out loud when I read this. Just wanted to let you know. Gold star.
Gold stars from internet strangers are always much appreciated!
I just built and planted my first raised bed last week! I started from seed probably a bit too late, but hey, I'll definitely get a few cucumbers. Maybe some jalapenos if I'm lucky.
Yes! Garden tour video! I can't tell you how much I appreciated this video. The good old john happiness was amazing. Just the pea mustache and the pea stuck in Johns nose and the reaction to that was something that we haven't had in awhile (this video reminds me of when John cooked with henry a long while ago!) Anyways, all I'm saying is that I really loved this video.
I really love that video where he cooks with Henry
These are the little videos I love John. I’m reminded of how you are just trying to love this one life you have. You help me be more grateful for mine.
“Luxury pea experience.” 😂
And yet we will still never know what hanks pea is like
Tonally, this video reminds me a lot of the 'How Not To Demolish A Wall' video from a very long time ago now. It's one of my favourite John videos of all time, and just something about the structure of this video and John's tone of voice throughout, combined with the whole 'instructions, but not all are helpful' thing, really hit me in the memories.
RIP Runaway Peas. You were too young and too tasty.
I just appreciate how such a nice camera with an incredible depth of field range was used for this video on harvesting and cooking peas
Step 1: Harvest pods
Step 2: Open pods
Step 3: Drop peas
Result: Peas on Earth

This is the best educational vlogbrothers video ever.
Can you do another 100 days series but instead of being about exercising it’s about gardening
Mark Fazi - Great idea!

To Pea or not to Pea... that is the question...
Ah yes, another Vlogbrother video to brighten up my day! 😄💕
You seem so happy in your garden and it makes me so happy.
My mom: "Don't play with food!"
Me: "But John Green.."
Man I miss these sort of videos, I don't come back to them often but they are GLORIOUS
This just made my day. Thank you for your existence ❤
Getting some "What Could You Do with a Poe Bust" vibes.
There´s nothing better than eating something you planted and saw growing up. You could eat a pack of the peas from the supermarket and they wouldn't make you feel the same way, although the taste is probably the same.
LiteralMentes *better than eating* eu estudo portugues acho que eres portuguesa
Wagner Gauer sou brasileira! And thanks for pointing it! For us the will to put the "TOs" instead of "INGs" is something to be studied hehehe.
Brincadeira kkk, sou brasileiro. Sabia que voce tmb era porque ja cometi muito esse erro rsrs. Gotcha kkk
hehehe, only a brazilian could do that "zueira" on the comments. Yeap, this needs to be studied. Told ya. It's a brazilian thing.
Everybody should do that... I don't think there is an equivalent word in English for "zueira", by the way it's better to say *saw it*, always forgetting the word "it" is a Brazilian thing too rsrs, just fixing it will make your speech even better
This luxurious pea experience is by far the best video you've ever made.
GARDEN VIDEO!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY JUST WHAT I WANTED!!!!!
Sorry for yelling, just excited

Not joking, before I clicked on this video, I thought, “wow, I’m so thankful for this RUclips channel because whenever I finish one of their videos I always feel like I’m bettering my knowledge and becoming a better human being. These videos help society. I can’t wait to be enriched further.” And then I clicked on the video and saw John with a pea mustache and I am even more in love with this channel. Thank you, John, for much needed pleasant surprises.
Do valuable peas pair well with slobber carrots?
this was just so gentle and pure. perfect content to consume while eating breakfast
A beautiful garden!!

I’m like 90% sure that the first time he dropped the peas he dropped two. Then he only got one. This is bothering me more than it should be. It was at about 0:23 btw.
Your peas ran... all the way down. :D :D :D
It is wonderful to see you do something so whimsical.

I missed the silly videos! I’ve been so anxious about leaving for college this reminded me of when I used to marathon all of their old videos. Thanks for all the happy memories.
You really don't want to eat uneducated peas...
.... "so then the team from Milton Keynes actually got relegated from the third tier of English Football..."
I just got home from work and this genuinely made my day, John.
I would have re-invested those peas as more pea plants.
A very entrepreneurial idea.
LOVE OF PLANTS 🌻 entre-pea-neurial
too late I guess..
This has been one of my favorite videos you've made this year. Mainly because of the explanation to the peas of the team currently plying its trade in Milton Keynes being relegated.
LMAO.
John, I can’t tell you how happy it makes me watching you enjoy your hobby! I’m glad you’ve found something that you love to do 💛 I will continue to vicariously enjoy your garden, please provide updates thank you
Why would he say, "my dad", if the video is addressed to Hank? Is the fascade finally slipping? How long can he keep the illusion that he and Hank are brothers? Obviously they are just buisness partners pretending to be brothers to keep their RUclips empire alive.
He was saying that his dad put up the fence; not that Hank is his dad. Also, I'm pretty sure that Hank and John live in different parts of the US, so I don't think Hank could've. There are other things that show it, though. The conspiracy lives on!
cooldaddyjames2814
it's a joke
MegLooy, thank you
Fresh garden grown peas must be eaten immediately, raw, in the garden as GOD intended!
1:38 This is how I feel when listening to the news from afc Wimbledon on Dear Hank and John.
Every now and then I just come back and watch this video because it's so pea-ceful and it just makes me so happy and helps me to appreciate life.
What the hell???😂 Why would you cook perfectly nice fresh and crisp peas from your own garden? They are supposed to be eaten raw. I feel like Americans live in another reality, where they think everything has to be in the form as it comes from the cans in the store. They lose all the sweetness and become quite tasteless when you boil them.
+1
Laura Vilbiks while I was watching I couldn't help but think the same exact thing
This American agrees that boiling peas ruins them. When they are raw they are like candy!
I agree that the raw pea fresh from the garden is far superior to the boiled pea (though I am an american)
You can certainly get good frozen peas which are a tasty addition to pasta or stir fry where you would want a cooked pea.
I don't see why you would cook such beautiful fresh peas straight from the garden though, especially when there are so few of them.
As someone who can harvest from my garden only because Im good at plant identification, I applaud your spotlessly CLEAN garden. Well done!
Who needs school when you have this?
I LOVE it when you sing, John. Your singing is underrated, for sure
