- MSF staff can be away from home for up to 12 months at a time providing emergency healthcare in some of the most challenging environments. So travelling light and only packing the essentials is a must.
But what makes it into their luggage may surprise you. It's not all mosquito repellent and gum boots.
Tell us what you'd take with you in the comments below

A bag full of hope.
Nice reply!!!
camara, journal, a good book to read!!!, textbooks (because I plan to go into the medical field and I want to be prepare for the unexpected), and of course headphones 😄...we all need music.
Definitely my DLSR. Then coffee, then medical textbooks!
I feel sad for the people who don't have the guts to go out into the world and do something like this or even the will to do something 'nice' in their life for others and yet they have the audacity to write hate comments on videos like this. Pathetic
music, books and lots of tea bags
Vital: Laptop, photo album and a bunch of memory cards
Equally vital: Vodka, Sweets and Board games
Store the memories but never forget to experience them.
a small good pillow, a musical instrument, coffee, digit watch, book, notebook to note down my experiences, medical textbook, locks, chocolate from where I come from!, hats & other stuff :D
Wonderful Guys..two telephone, our italian mini-potato, album of photograph, and chewing gum clotofilla*perfetti* ♡♡♡
Music, books (novels), confortable shoes, chocolate.
candy, vicks, books, flashlight, infinite amount of hair ties, board games
Some postal cards from home or from some iconic place like Eiffel Tower. And a compass, always a compass: a GPS gadget may fail, your phone may fall in the river, the rain could block your normal way back to the camp, but a compass never fail. Loyal friend.
Storage with podcasts and some movies, pocket knife, YubiKey (for safe communication), coffee, chocolate, a good pillow, and definitively a Tilley Hat
Journal and books! Lots of books!
Bottle of pepper sauce form my home Trinidad, chocolate, swiss mist tea ,satellite phone, hat, and curry powder
I gather you like spicy food? Never heard of Swiss Mist Tea before.
Go up
full of hope.
Music, books and at least a travel guitar, harmonica or any other music instrument... otherwise i would go insane I guess :D
I wish I was qualified to go & I’d take my pillow, chocolates, whiskey, night eye shades, warm socks, hat, gloves & boots. I’d also bring bubble blowing liquid for kids.
My AA books and stationary for writing letters. No wiskey for me lol.
Swiss army knife, phone, camera, hat, deck of cards, alcohol - If allowed, plus all the chocolate I can carry!
journal, portable camera, fiction books, tea and chocolate, bug spray, super-compact bible, water filter straw, and my lucky jacket
I think I will take with me some gifs for the children , and my dog (it’s all I need to survive ) 😂
toothpicks, deodorant, perfume, green tea with lemon and mint , bubblegum and definitely chocolate.
Perfume? Green tea is okay but do you really need lemon and mint? Chocolate is a necessity wherever one goes and quite a lot of deodorant especially in a hot climate I'd guess. My Swiss army knife has a toothpick in it so that takes care of many things.
I'm probably 4 years from getting my BSN (at age 42), and have thought about joining MSF. Do they take middle-aged people with little professional experience but a decent amount of life experience, albeit as a privileged person in the US? I'd pack as if for an extended backpacking trip, except that I can bring more "luxury" items like deodorant and a pillow and gifts for people--sounds like chocolate is popular! Stickers or candy for local kids? Maybe booze to give away and/or drink myself. Tampons/pads for me and to give away? Not much clothing, makeup, or jewelry, though. Hiking boots, sandals, work shoes. Raincoat, rain kilt, sun protection (mechanical and chemical), lip balm, lotion. OTC meds. More things to give away, maybe? Professional texts/guides? I'd certainly write a comprehensive list before I left, were I leaving. Phone, laptop, solar charging panel. Sounds like padlocks might be important, judging from others' comments.
Have a look at their website, its got all the information you need about experience and who they are looking for ect. They often recruit nurses from the countries the missions are in for what iv heard but its worth having a look.
If I was 42 with your credentials, I would go. You pack heavy & so do I but I’d really work at traveling light. Take two lightweight, insulated outfits including long-johns. Protective inside/outside shoes & socks. Warm hat. Tiny things to delight kids. My pillow, alpaca throw, whiskey & night shades. Chocolate!
lip balm and sun block . . . . and loads of tea
Although I agree with your choices, I can't drink tea unless it's very cold, to warm me up.
Padlocks. Baby padlocks, medium padlocks. Lots of em.
Not very trusting I gather!
So i tried severally to apply MSf here in my country, nigeria. But i haven't been granted access cause i do not have a referral of someone in working msf. Can someone help me with a contact? Or an easy way out to apply as a Nurse for the job, please!??!!!
