As you've explained, there is nothing special about this car. It's not low mlieage. It's not rare. It's not in god condition to begin with. Feel free to go crazy with it. Take it to the wilderness!
As per the stalling issue. If it is doing it when you come to a stop and you are just idling, then clean out the throttle body/butterfly valve. Carbon buildup on there can cause it to stall.
I'd like to see it restored with a paint job. Even if you add the parts from the last one. I like the body style, plus most of them are wagons but I like the sedans, and I like the color.
I think keep the paint the way it is, but clean it up a little. Put some BF Goodrich KO2s on the factory wheels, do a small suspension lift, and put a rack on the roof. Make it a fun "street off-road cruiser".
Great cars. Being the EJ22 it should run forever. They don't blow head gaskets like the NA EJ25, which is the only Subaru engine that actually has prevalent head gasket issues. It is a bit more common in the 97+ EJ22 though. These are suuuper easy to work on and have relatively few problems. Occasionally need front ball joints, axles, or wheel bearings. Looks like this one would clean up alright and be a good daily for someone TBH. 179K is what we would call broken in here in VT. Being rust free, this is actually worth quite a bit to the right person. I'm actually selling a 99 wagon right now with 245K and it's still fantastic. 😁 The leaks are pretty standard, most are easy fixes. Overall though, like you said, they aren't super rare. Just rare without tons of rust. Do an off road build the right way could be really cool. Idle issue is likely just IAC or something very simple. There are only a few things that can cause that. Engine sounds healthy! Have fun. ☺️ Unfortunately that EJ22 has single exhaust port heads, so bolting on a turbo isn't as easy as the pre 97.
Give the car a detail, change the headlight covers (you might as well change the bulbs while you're there), paint the car, change the wheels (and the tyres, maybe), check for mechanical and electrical issues (especially the head gaskets). There's a lot to do to this car to make it look good. Then modify it whichever way you want and take it rallying.
Definitely would enjoy seeing you off road it and you have some of the stuff already just use it no point in wasting more money besides getting it mechanically sound. Also you should have someone or a fan send you a boat load of stickers to spruce it up once you clean it. Have fun till it blows up then move onto one of your existing cars
THESE ARE WONDERFUL! I have a rare spec… 1999 (last model year of this generation) Subaru Legacy Wagon 30th anniversary. It’s Sandstone Metallic (unique color) with a 5 speed! The ej22 it has, is so reliable! Keep it and make it last forever!!
My 30th Anniversary wagon (automatic) is white.......or what little paint there is left is white......sooo much rust. Its next oil change is at 270,000 miles. And by the time Tesla builds my next daily driver, that engine will likely be over 300K.
Man, I used to have one of these! It was a '99 and burgundy, so I named it "Ruby the Suby". And you're right... the 2.2 liter motor was pretty slow but reliable for me. The only problems I had were the valve cover gaskets (that's probably your oil leak, too) , that same window switch, and the wheel bearings. It was my first AWD car and the grip was awesome in wet weather. Man, do I miss that car. 😕
Give it a good service and cleanup, make it nice and then turn it into a cool ratty gambler car. Maybe even some funky 90s graphics just for the hell of it? Give it some character.
Out of the fleet, this would be the one to sacrifice to modifications. Normally I don't like modifications, but for some reason I'd be ok with this one. (If it were me.) Have fun with it, Ethan!
So my buddy just turned my old 01 obw into a convertible lol mainly because it's crying mercy with 310k miles between 2 engines lol. Turn it into a battle sedan. Check the hoses for the stalling out, for me it was like an upper radiator hose if I remember right. Have fun dude
The Legacy Sedan did have a lifted variant in that generation which they called the "SUS" (To you Among Us meme makers, this means "Sport Utility Sedan"), so such a custom build isn't so out of the ordinary and it would benefit it's all-season capability.
The fact that you also had a '98 Legacy means an off roader was meant to be! Get a friend with an OBII scanner and get that stalling issue figured out. It could be as simple as a dirty MAF or throttle body as well as possibly a fuel pump
Maybe it's just me, but there are some brands, that don't make any real sense as sedans. You either have to have a station wagon or none at all. Don't get me wrong, Subarus are kinda cool. Never owned one but I've driven some. But a Subaru has to be a station wagon. For me it's the same with Volvos and Audis. I always wonder, why the original owner didn't go for a station wagon? How do you guys feel about that?
If you off-road it, it'll almost certainly die. I'd get a cheap paint job and fix it up a little and just enjoy it for what it is. They said they wanted it to have a good send off. I don't think off-roading it was what they probably had in mind. You could also sell it after you fix it to someone who'll take care of it properly and even make a little money off of it while you are at it.
Hey Ethan, this car looks suspiciously like a daily driver... If it is good fun as a daily, keep it even fix it up... Actually the wagon makes more sense as an off-roader. So not sure you found the perfect replacement to you old Subaru.
As much as I respect, even love old cars, and root for the oddities - hey I had an Isuzu Stylus, anyone know what that was? (But have respect, it was the XS; suspension by Lotus :) - this one does nothing for me. It's an undistinguished leftover from the jellybean era in its most uninteresting trim - if you can get some use out of it with mods, my vote is go for it. In my world it would become tomorrow's fridge. Right up there with a Tempo (yup had one of those too).
subaru's are over al good and nice cars, turning it into another off road car sounds fun. but is it rear wheel drive or all wheel drive? if its rear wheel drive you should turn it into a drifter car. or make it madmax style, apocalyptic style rat look. and if you do wanna go on with an off road car make it more rally style, wide body mods and hella halogen lights in front and a big spoiler on the back. or make it rally dakar style, with that rack and put a wheel and fuel tank on top and another wheel on the back and a roll cage in it.
Let's analyze the situation rationally: you have the will to modify this car, you already have most of the parts... As long as you don't send this car to the scrapyard, like the old one, I'm fine with anything!
I'd like to see the car, and every single panel and surface, covered with googly-eyes. With every bump and turn those eyes would be bouncing all over the place.
Take it off road. That's not a special car, nor has it been well maintained by the looks of it. Your finances don't deserve the punishment of fixing that one up.
What do you think I should do with my free Subaru?
I vote for the 'last hurrah' option. ;-)
As you've explained, there is nothing special about this car.
It's not low mlieage. It's not rare. It's not in god condition to begin with.
Feel free to go crazy with it.
Take it to the wilderness!
Gambler 500 build and take it off road
You should sell it and buy a GP Turbo
@@MrChevybaja 🤔
Yep that's definitely Gambler 500 worthy. And remember: You don't have to blow them up EVERY time. My buddy Rob has had his Gambler for 3 years now.
Hell yeah, I've had the same Gambler for 3 years and it just keeps getting better (or worse)
As per the stalling issue. If it is doing it when you come to a stop and you are just idling, then clean out the throttle body/butterfly valve. Carbon buildup on there can cause it to stall.

She'd be an amazing Gambler. I say fix only what is needed to be safe and just go full send.
09:14 "I can just keep topping of the oil"
Well, it's your driveway and your yard after all.
Gambler 500 build, and a 555 rally inspired graphic vinyl wrap on it!
My best friend in high school had a Subaru Legacy in the 90s. I always get nostalgic when I see one.
Give the car a detail, change the headlight covers (you might as well change the bulbs while you're there), paint the car, change the wheels (and the tyres, maybe), check for mechanical and electrical issues (especially the head gaskets). Definitely turn it into an off-roader! You've got enough on your plate as far as projects go. This subaru is perfect for an off road toy.
Perfect car to make into an off-road toy! Excited to see the mods
Turn it into the off road option it will be super fun and bring back old memories
Please restore this beauty to it’s former glory that would be absolutely awesome to see happen to this Subaru that has a lot of life left in it

1. Run a Fuel system cleaner. 2. Change oil to High mileage. 3. Change Spark plugs. 4. Make sure battery is good. 5. Give a good clean inside/outside.
Yes, I agree, you've restored to factory spec a few cars now, I think this is the perfect one to do an off road build
Out of the fleet, this would be the one to sacrifice to modifications. Normally I don't like modifications, but for some reason I'd be ok with this one. (If it were me.)
Have fun with it, Ethan!
Make it into a offroad vehicle is a great idea, I would definitely and fix the leaks and take it offroading.
I bought a '99 Mazda Protege new. It doesn't seem that long ago and its hard to grasp that it was "a very long time ago" lol
So my buddy just turned my old 01 obw into a convertible lol mainly because it's crying mercy with 310k miles between 2 engines lol. Turn it into a battle sedan. Check the hoses for the stalling out, for me it was like an upper radiator hose if I remember right. Have fun dude

I would paint it blue. Then put yellow graphics on it and give it that rally car look
Maintenance item probably overlooked for 23 years: clean the maf sensor
Yep!
I'm totally looking forward to you turning this car into a ridiculous off-roading machine.
Rocker cover gaskets will probably sort the smoke/oil leak
Check the idle control sensor maybe

Hmmm....the car didn't set my heart a-racing....but it's a reasonably nice colour somewhere under there...
My son had the front wheel drive one , he did the SVX motor swap what tires fryer it was ... he ended pulling the motor and looking for an AWD car
This Is my favorite legacy. Anything you do Ill be tuned in =) make an SUS out of it why not??

Make it a rugged off road beast. Plasty dip
turbocharge it and bulid you own b4 rsk out of it
That would be sick
Turn it to a jdm style B4 trim
Comes with a free donut!
Yes make it an off roader.
It's not stalling - the stop/start system needs to be switched off. ;-)
🤔😆
172k? That’s low mileage as far as most of us Subaru geeks are concerned.
90s green.
I’d make it an off road vehicle
I assumed you topped off the oil (?)
Changed the oil :) :)
Lift it off road and send it
Mortar swapppp. (I spelled it like that on purpose)
Is it AWD?? Take it off road like it was built to be if so!
Yes it is AWD :) :)

I wouldn’t say you “just” got it since you had it for what seems like forever and never made a video on it
Haha yeah. I guess I "just" got to making a video about it :)

Give it to a female who doesn't have a home currently. At least she can sleep safe with locked doors.
Since you are not mechanically savvy, you should probably not get any more cars.
He has enough cars he could become mechanically savvy, it just requires jumping into projects and learning as you go.
