Murray is such an extraordinary man, an engineering icon in my view. Creating a supercar that is lighter than a current MX-5 and has a freaking NA V12 with 663 HP , 467 Nm that revs to 12.000 RPM ? AND it's a manual? We should be building a shrine to him.
I’m not going to ever have an opportunity to speak to Gordon, but if I did I’d like to ask him his opinion on cars vs bikes and in his opinion to what extent are the latter less compromised than the former? I’d be very interested to see a GMD sportsbike...
"Unfortunately you have committees and levels of management. And you'll never get an iconic motorcar out of committees and levels of management", Gordon Murray. What a brilliant comment!
@@tombittikoffer412 Too many. Start with engine reliability and the F50 underpowered engine is because of this. Ferrari made a 700 hp engine for race with F40 and a 900 hp engine with F50. we are listening to an automotive genius being interviewed by the best automotive journalist around IMO , cant wait to see Chris behind the wheel of this amazing creation . fantastic interview thanks Chris
Well, Cris and Mr. Murray. It is so difficult to explain how much I wish my dad could have heard this. My dad born in 1943 and was a huge F1 fan. I grew up with a passion for 80S and 90s F1 racing. He had every race recorded on VHS TAPE!! He was a true fan of the sport. Include 24 hours...This interview was so different than what has been released over the last several days, about the T50. I’m speechless. The variety of topics discussed today, I only wish my dad could have heard this...especially the 60/40 air split between the radiator and downforce. I’m running low on Kleenex...Anyway...wow speechless! Oh yeah side note! WOW Gordon Murray’s environmental view, very solid thoughts on the future. What an amazing person, legacy and Car maker.
I have to say, as an 18 y/o now, this must be exactly how it felt when the F1 was released back in the 90s It sounds like an absolute revelation, and I'm sure it will be. Can't wait for your thoughts Chris, thanks for the dreams Gordon.
Yes it was although I was much younger than 18 when I heard of the f1 back in the day and we didn’t have the plethora of hyper and supercars there is these days so I’d say it was better back then .
@@moosahans4830 The thing is, living in eastern Europe 911s have hardly any presence here and I get excited whenever I see one or anything above that, though yes my generation is certainly a lot more spoiled with how much info you can accumulate over these online but I think my case just hyper-intensifies how exciting the T.50 is now.
Yes, likely these are moments you can reflect back on in years to come with a sense of “I was there”. One key difference between then and now is the availability of information and media. When I was growing up in the late 70s and 80s there was no internet, you tube or social media. Anything you learned about supercars such as the F1 was through a combination of playground myths and Top Trumps! If you were lucky you might get hold of a magazine or two. Contrast that with the media surrounding the T50. So much that I cannot possibly consume it all - it’s great to have so much intel these days but I do somewhat miss the myth and mystery of those pre-internet days.
PrinceBarin agree a 1000%. The mystery and anticipation was all part of the enjoyment. Now here we are with GM taking to Harris, Catchpole, Rix, etc and all their videos coming out together
Agreed, and as a podcast style host he is really good at knowing when to shut up and listen to brilliance, and when to jump in with his own opinion, info, or questions. Really enjoyed listening to this!
Hopefully the T50 at least inspires people, even if it's just a small percentage, to think about cars differently. The weight and unnecessary size of modern cars is very sad. We don't see enough Lotuses, Alpines etc.
Yeah, for sure it will inspire a bunch of people... but the committees and overall performance-car buyers just don't give a f*** so we get what we get.
Totally agree. This is why I put the T.50 in the same category as a Porsche by Singer. Both cars are the best of analog technology and both are scaled to the human body.
@@DarkHumorWritesItself I listened intently when Gordon and Chris were talking about electric cars. They are the future. ICE engines reliance on oil and the pollution they cause isn't sustainable for the planet. Yes, a Tesla weighs 4,400 lbs. (The T.50 weighs less than 1/2 of a Tesla.) but this is because battery technology is still in its infancy. It might take 10 - 20 years for battery technology to mature but this is nothing compared to how long ICE engines have been around. The energy density in electric motors compared to petrol is abysmal but this will change. Elon Musk is heading the way but there are other brilliant minds as well. Without Tesla every automotive manufacturer in the world would have continued to do business as usual. Even Toyota, with the success of the Prius sued California over emission standards and, 20 years from now, the VW Golf would still be the same as it is today. Electric cars and battery technology are the disruption that the automotive industry needed. We are just at the beginning and experiencing growing pains. This doesn't take anything away from the brilliance of the T.50. In fact, two nights ago I stayed awake the entire night reading and listening to everything I could about the T.50. I finally fell asleep at 8am, woke up at noon, and started all over again. The T.50 is an engineering marvel. It's the only drivers car that interests me besides a Porsche by Singer.
@@DarkHumorWritesItself Yes, I was listening, and I didn't have to listen to know these facts. You didn't read what I said. "The energy density in electric motors compared to petrol is abysmal but this will change." I also know there's an exhorbitant amount of pollution associated with the production of batteries. Like I said, we are at the beginning stages and there are growing pains. There's the world of mass market cars and the world of $2.5 million supercars. They are not the same. My only ticket to technology is a subway ticket and even if I had the money I would not buy a Tesla today. Too many quality control problems and I would hold out for solid-state batteries. Now let's talk about Porsche by Singer. You said, "Singer is overpriced 964 911." That's blasphemy. You need to read your Bible: _Genesis 2, Verses 2 - 4._ "and on the 7th day, God looked down from the heavens upon the masses of automotive mediocrity. None of what He saw pleased him; not Ferrari, Rolls Royce, not even a donkey, so God stretched his arm down to the Earth and touched the hand of Rob Dickinson. Alas, Singer Vehicle Design was born. Let there be light."
I’m sad this video doesn’t have more views, this message should be shouted from the roof tops. Right now in the present; manual, UNBELIEVABLE Cossy engine, epic looks. But in future, light weight is one of the most important things this car is out to prove. Hats off Harris for putting this episode together and Gordon for inspiring stories and legacy’s that will no doubt be looked at for generations to come.
Fantastic interview! I could listen to these gentlemen talk all day. Gordon has such wonderful stories, and I was hooked the entire time. I can't wait to see Chris drive a T.50 around a track!

This has been one of the most lovely podcasts to which I've ever listened. I am a bit underwhelmed by the styling of the T.50, but conceptually, I can't begin to agree more with the approach.
Gordon Murray is an automotive legend. Could hear him for hours, what a fascinating character. His T.50 is going to be an amazing piece of engineering and a breath of fresh air to the over-inflated numbers only hypercar world of today. Can't wait to see Chris doing skids in one on a future video. Cheers for the incredible podcast, guys. All the best
Gordon Murray's choice of cars definitely gives us a clear indication what a true driving enthusiast he really is! Much respect for you sir. Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ah Chris what a fascinating chat to an engineering design legend. This is one of my favourites so far, with your passion for car operation you must have been in your element, your voice gave away the enthusiasm and excitement of the meeting, a joy to listen to.
Brilliant! Really wondered whether I should listen since the web is inundated with the T.50 this week, but I shouldn't have hesitated. Chris did a stellar job as always and it's another great episode. Was chuffed to hear about the Jimny too ;)
Thanks, great interview. Gordon Murray is brilliant and he has a super-interesting story to tell. All the better, his manner of speaking is so clear and easy on the ears I could listen to him for hours.
Listening to this podcast was like listening to your grandfather tell stories as a child… if your grandfather was on the Mount Rushmore of automotive design & engineering. Just “bucket list” stuff.
Bravo Chris, great let’s-not-rush-through-this interview, what a talent Gordon is. Love all the history, the philosophy, the passion. Two things. I once had a request from Peter Stevens (via my friend, that late Richard Lloyd) to lend him a road car whilst he was at work helping to style the original F1, so he borrowed my then ex GTi Engineering Golf, and then following that, my 2CV Charleston, which was a bit tatty, and he said he loved leaving it in the McLaren Cars car park as it wound up Gordon, who he said wasn’t a fan... Secondly, I used to own a drop head ‘73 Elan Sprint, which was always such a rewarding car to drive, especially on a good A or B road, and I completely get why Gordon has (more than) one and rates it so highly. My dream would be that he reimagines one for the ‘20s. Only complaint is you forgot to remind him about the Piquet anecdote(s), but hey, next time!
Fantastic PODCAST Chris. And fantastic comments and insights from a man whose true genius allows him to be so humble. I would add to Gordon's comments about the idiotic proliferation of SUV's - for anybody out there dismayed at the rise of electrified cars - and oppressing emission laws stifling internal combustion engine vehicles - look in your garage or that of your neighbour - and if you or your neighbour have one - YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!! i only wish I could ever afford a T50 because I am exactly the person that Gordon designs these cars for; an outright enthusiast who lives for driving and who drives for the experience and not the bragging rights.
When I first seen the T50 I didn’t realize how big of a deal it is!!! It’s right up there with The Valkyrie and AMG One even though it’s a completely different type of car!!!!
I realized it when Murray said the test mule was the Ultima GTR (again), which is an insanely fast 100k road legal kitcar beating lap times of the most expensive hyper cars. When practice starts here you know it's going to be good, the McLaren F1 did it.
I hope this car starts a movement where big companies start to follow Gordon’s example and start focusing on driver’s cars. I think there’s an untapped market for this and they’re scared to try it.
One of The GOATs. nothing much else to say, I think Gordon, Chapman and Newey are the most important and influential designers in the history of automotive.. and thats on God
Gordon Murray, one of the greatest influences in all areas of cars in the last 40/50 years! And so nice to hear him have exactly the same views as myself makes me feel a whole lot better about my perspective regarding current shite cars and BS EV’s! Cannot wait to see the T.50 hit the road and Chris drive it on track and is a guaranteed success from the man that made the last best analogue supercar the F1!
Such an interesting and exciting podcast to listen to the man, the engineer/designer of the best driving experience machine. So good to hear the inside thoughts of Gordon Murray. Thanks so much Chris for the interview.
All the while as I was watching the videos with Gordon Murray, I kept thinking "if only there was a new podcast with him". To have him here with Chris damn
Chris, Absolutely great interview. Even though we didn't get to see the car as in some of the other videos around, this was very interesting to listen to. Gordon Murray is absolutely brilliant as an engineer and he knows what really matters in a car and what we (he) want(s) from a car. Wish he would do an affordable sports car as well, would really like to drive one of the cars he designed.
This is a video that you don't listen to on the fly but rather watch at home, with a cool coke and an adblocker at your disposal. So pointless criticism.
Out of all the interviews done over the past few days on Gordon Murrray and his T50 (believe me there are quite a few), this is by far the best out of them all. It could be there is no camera/s pointing at Mr. Murray; he seems very natural and more articulated. Or ... it could just be Harris himself, his enthusiasm shines through always, who knows ...
The discussion right at the end is brilliant. Very few ever talk about the role weight plays into the efficiencies of these new cars/crossover abominations. I wonder if carbon fiber chassis will trickle down to our everyday cars not just super cars and what impact that’d make or is it just too expensive?
best interview I've heard in a long time. Gordon Murray is just right about everything automotive-related. Couldn't help thinking at the end that Chris might be a bit guilty - I think I remember him saying his family also has a massive SUV for the school run.
the number of RUclips ads during what is visually just one long ad for a car consignment service is a massive piss-take though. Taking the piss squared, I think Mister 'Arris.
Such epic, immersive content. However the experience really is spoiled due to the frequency of ads. I understand the need but bloody hell it spoils the listening experience! Could they be pegged back just a bit? Keep these fantastic interviews coming though, first class content!!

I love the inspiring & enlightening discussion. I just wonder if Prof. Murray will have his own T.50
Wow... learned so much from this podcast. In fact, all your podcasts Chris Harris. Thank you.
Audio was spot on. Great questions. Really excellent interview
Superb pod cast. I could listen to Gordon Murray all day. Anecdotes about Piquet and Senna in detail are fascinating
What an awesome conversation. Many thanks to both Chris & Gordon.
An hour and a half but enjoyed every minute. Illuminating.
What an absolutely fabulous interview, honestly one of the most enjoyable I’ve heard on any topic.
What a refreshing interview. Love the note on which it ends and the problem it tackles regarding size and weight of current cars.
Such an interesting and exciting podcast to listen to the man, the engineer/designer of the best driving experience machine. So good to hear the inside thoughts of Gordon Murray. Thanks so much Chris for the interview.
that was absolutely fascinating. thanks. we need more Gordon Murray in our world. Looking forward to a follow up.
Listened to the whole thing, which is a rarity for me. Love listening to Gordon Murray.
Same here... Absolutely enjoyed all 90 minutes,... Glorious interview.
I could listen to Gordon for hours and hours .... such a nice down to earth guy :)))
These 2 gents had some blame in me buying an A110 recently... and Chris also on my previous gt86! 😍
Gordon is on the money about electric cars!
Thank you so much for one of the best podcast to date!! 2 legends talking!!❤️
Chris and Gordon? Two absolute icons
Gordon Murray is God!!!. I hit the like button before i even pressed play. Best podcast ive listened to in ages!!!!
Loved this interview. Two greats in the motoring world talking sense about cars and their future.
absolutely loved this and can not wait to see you drive a t50
What a man. And I love the way him and chris think the same about cars. Great podcast one of the best I have ever listened to. Great job.
All the while as I was watching the videos with Gordon Murray, I kept thinking "if only there was a new podcast with him". To have him here with Chris damn
Chris,
Absolutely great interview.
This many ads are just obnoxious.
I agree
Use an ad blocker.
This is a video that you don't listen to on the fly but rather watch at home, with a cool coke and an adblocker at your disposal. So pointless criticism.
@Just think Electric cars are a dead end anyway. Combustion engines will be around as long as people.
Just listen to the podcast. No ads and better player controls
As someone passionate about cars, this is HEAVEN!!
Best interview in the world....with the 2 most interesting car guys ever
The discussion right at the end is brilliant. Very few ever talk about the role weight plays into the efficiencies of these new cars/crossover abominations. I wonder if carbon fiber chassis will trickle down to our everyday cars not just super cars and what impact that’d make or is it just too expensive?
Now that was an amazing interview!
Wonderful - thank you Chris and Gordon!
Gordon Murray is why I got in to engineering, listening to this makes it more so
best interview I've heard in a long time.
Outstanding interview I’ve been interested in Gordon Murray since the 1970s what a career!
That was a brilliant interview, very interesting.
Great questions, fascinating answers.
Such epic, immersive content. However the experience really is spoiled due to the frequency of ads. I understand the need but bloody hell it spoils the listening experience! Could they be pegged back just a bit? Keep these fantastic interviews coming though, first class content!!
Chris, excellent discussion, loved this one and the rest of the series. Please keep them coming. Best wishes Nick
Fantastic conversation & insight Gordon is still carrying Chapman's batton, 'Simplify & add Lightness' Should have asked him about his Retropower built Escort.
