I used to be so carefree in college. I was an asshole, and I mercilessly beat myself mentally for the past 7 years because of some mistakes I made back then. I've made myself feel worthless. I compare this anxious quiet guy I've become to who I used to be and it's wild... I'm more accomplished, more moral, physically stronger than I've ever been, but I can barely speak sometimes, and I get so tongue-tied for stupid reasons. The other day though I had my first free day in a long time. I went to urgent care to deal with a foot injury, chatted with some of the ladies behind the counter all normal, got wait listed so i went and talked to an acquaintance who lived in the area who I've always had awkward convos with and it was fluid and kind of fun, then i went back to UC and I rizzed up my nurse, she was smiling and laughing the whole time, then i rizzed up my doc as well, she was more serious, but she still smiled a lot, laughed at some of my jokes. It was a really good day. I want that more often.

Man I can totally relate to this guy as it’s pretty much the same way I act in social situations..... When I’m at home with my misses I am confident, charismatic and carefree. Always making jokes and clowning around.
But as soon as I’m around anyone else I feel like the real me disappears and I suddenly become verbally and emotionally constipated to the point where I can’t express any kind of emotion.
Everything just becomes awkward and I feel like I’m rehearsing things in my head to say before I speak - and when I do speak it always comes out stifled and rushed with no emotion...
It’s like I suddenly turn into a really rigid actor that can’t move, emote or speak properly.
I wish people could see the real me but so far only my misses and a couple of people extremely close to me have met that guy.

I disagree, I'm under 6ft and I'm not that shy, and I know people who are weirdly short and half of them are the most charismatic people I know. It's probably a contributing factor and effects self-esteem to a degree, sure. But I also think that not being encouraged early on sets you up to become more rejected and socially anxious, which breeds more anxiety and rejection and so on the loop goes. All kids are charismatic and wild but many of us start to shelter ourselves somewhere along the way for protection, and we become disconnected to our loose selves. Often our parents don't want us being a noisy distraction and high school is often ruthless.

When I direct films, I often show the actors what I want them to do by doing it myself rather than telling them what to do. For example, if this guy wanted you to celebrate a motorcycle race victory, he could have himself pretended like he was celebrating a motorcycle race victory. He could have been like, "Alright, Julien, I know you might feel nervous about this shoot, but we are going to do this together. I'm going to show you what I want to see in you." It takes a lot of the pressure off the subject, allows the director to be loose, and since we are creatures of imitation, it is much easier for the subject to learn what they are supposed to do.

I feel like it’s easy to say all these things when you are already comfortable in your own skin. Depression, anxiety, years of conditioning molds us into the person we are and affects all facets of our personality. So if you fix one thing, you still have another thing reminding you of what you are. Whether it’s your anxious sounding voice or nervous habits in an overall confident demeanor. We live life judging based on the smaller details expecting the entirety of a person must show absolute confidence and lack of uncertainty.

I recently found you and love your stuff. Something about this video really hit me and all of a sudden I felt very clear. I felt really happy and then burst into tears. This has NEVER happened to me before. I kept saying to myself, "what are you doing". I then grabbed my phone and started to write because I wanted to capture what I was feeling. This is what I wrote.
Its up to me to generate my own fun and vibration. You can stop now. Stop trying to do what you think you should do and start just being. For you. Start joking. For you. Carefree, fun passion. For you. Stop chasing something that is not there. Stop doing what you think you should be doing. For others. Do you. Really do you. Because you are amazing and funny and loving and passionate. Don't contain this any longer. It's you, so live it authentically, without covert contracts or caregiving. You are trying so hard to be the things that you naturally are, but looking for permission to do it on the outside. You don't need permission any more. Set yourself free. For the first time in your life. Set yourself free. For you. Just for you, and watch everyone around you enjoy this gift as they see the real authentic you. I love you. I really love you and I am proud of you. Very very proud of you. Now start living because you deserve it.
I used to be a funny energetic guy, but over time got wound so tight and don't know how to get out. I think I figured it our this morning and it hit me. Be me. That's it. So simple, just have to break the habit of making others approval the top priority. Thank you so much for doing what you do. I will carry this with me through my day and we will see what happens!

I come from a more self inquiry/philosophical/spiritual type of making sense of reality and I must say that a big game changer I stumbled on from thinking/contemplating was realizing that giving yourself permission is a milestone, you don’t need it from anyone else, the more I thought about about it, the more it made sense, don’t look to others for permission to be what you are or how the universe expresses itself through you, allow it to be. Of course it’s also wise to be aware of the social consensus, don’t get yourself into unnecessary trouble.

If I could add a fourth tip, it would be go out more with people you are comfortable around. Creativity, that loose spark requires being comfortable and it gets disconnected when worrying about how you are being perceived. So this is to tie into tip 2 he gave really, doing it for yourself and not to impress others. But best to practise in public with people you feel relaxed around, then start inviting strangers to your table or whatever to expand. Otherwise the mind kind of panics and goes blank under the pressure.. That's what's worked for me anyway. That and deliberately doing a silly body shake to loosen up a bit helps. Love your work!

20:50, this is one of the things I wanna talk about - might not help a lot of people. But it might help someone. Starting to get loud is hard, because you’re afraid of how people might respond. I have a tick, I meow. This used to be sometimes randomly, and sometimes when I did not know how to respond to a question of other people. When you find out when people don’t find it off-putting, it makes it easier every time to do so in public. They still might find it weird, yeah, but weird leaves an impression, and that is what open and loud people do - they leave an impression, rememberable. Having this tick helped me show slowly, it is not that scary.
I use it as an entertainment piece for people, nowadays (tick’s still there), but I throw it in cautiously. Job interviews, dates, friends (obviously) and trying to get the right timings for comedic effect makes people laugh that much more.
If you have made it this far down my comment, this is my advice, create a tick if you have non ( that you know of ;-) ), a short sound, parrot, dog, cat, small chirp, water droplet. Start when you’re alone at home, practice (I’m slight tic sensitive, so when I do stuff repeatedly at home - it will get out eventually).
If you already have something you do alone, make it known to your friends, not telling, doing it.
Sometime later you’ll start in public accidentally, and realize some people find it weird, some people find it funny, and it was not scary at all. It is such an easy way to get it started - you may take all the time you want, and you literally can’t do anything wrong. As soon as people discover it, you even have something to start talking about (I used to bark, not sure why, but somewhere during SpongeBob, Garry converted me I guess).
Nowadays, I love to make people uncomfortable in public, this sounds harsh, but you know what. With a good heart and the right intentions, they will love you for it.
People don't bite, not in my experience. Start small, grow to be your true inner self. Leave an impression and people will love you for it.

Weird people are fun ❣ and Julien, I've watched now many of your videos; I like pushing people, especially if they are stuck, human psychology is very interesting - but the occasions are rare that I realize at the moment that I should do something or what they are saying ( back to the talk I want to get into ;-) ). It's so clear with 9/10 people in the videos you know exactly which buttons to press at which moment - I admire your skill, thank you for being out there. I really mean that. I need to get some water again...

This reminds me of an experience I once had. So I used to do racing and went to a mental training coach to learn some techniques once. When he taught me visualization, he told me to imagine being on the starting grid. I had to imagine my position, my rivals, the weather, who was there, the smells, the touch of the steering wheel on my hand and the tension of waiting for the green light. It was like I was there, and I could feel my pulse go up amd I was ready to race while sitting in a chair in an office haha.
It's not easy to go up on stage like this, so props to the guy for doing it and trying. I think it would be better if the guy asked him how it would feel to win a race, making him imagine what that is like on his own, rather than tell him to feel like he won a race.
Which leads us to the idea I got and to the reason I am writing this comment:
You can not tell someone how to feel, you have to wiggle/tickle it out of them. The feeling is already there, it just needs to be released

Something you also gotta consider..Julien is the star of the show, he’s the one on the spotlight. So when he pulls up these people they are obviously going to be less “carefree” than he is. It’s like doing an open mic in standup comedy. Afterwards your always more “in state” than you were before. Only thing I would recommend elaborating on is..explaining more on how you get to that point. Like the exercise was a good example.

    I have a question.
If I am generating in myself let's say the feeling of fun.
And I feel that the other person is generating let's say a feeling of bordom.
    What feeling wins?
In other words who will transfer his emotion on the ohter?
The one who feels his emotion stronger?
I've had that happen multiple times that I let a negative emotion trump my positive.
How would I get stronger to win this "battle"?
Or how can I defend from other emotions taking me over.
    Perfect example:
Interviewer turning my positivity into some form of fear.
