For those of you who are still wondering, it is a Weber octave mandolin. Search for Sierra Hull and octave mandolin on RUclips and there is a clip of her playing and then describing the instrument. It is tuned one octave below the regular mandolin. They are fun to play and sing with. It has nearly the same range as a guitar except the low string only goes down to the G and not an E. The mandocello has the voice of the cello (violoncello), and so the low note is a low C, a fifth below the low G of the octave mandolin.
Sierra Hull..OMG!!..This woman is awesome. I am deffo a fan now..And i've been playing guitar for near 26yrs. Sierra has a great voice too..Very Allison Krauss.
my favorite mandolin player, yep big fan, she is reviving bluegrass from its slump and written some tunes. here lately she is learning the fiddle should be awesome clips later on. go to her website and buy some cds and t shirts. viva la bluegrass!!!!! show your support.
It's a Weber Octave Mandolin. About a 22" scale or thereabouts, and tuned one octave lower than a regular mandolin, with the strings tuned in unison pairs, also like a regular mandolin.
My God, this young woman is talented! I think she's my new music hero!! (But she does outclass her band. She's on a completely different level of performance than they are.) Sierra, please come to Portland, Oregon!
mr. simmons, I wasn't wondering.....I have 2 bouzoukis, if you want to see a bizarre looking bouzouki/octave mandolin, Tim O'Brien plays such that looks like Gibson F hole guitar, and another made by Coronado Giacomo ( an Italian luthier I think) which looks like it came from ....somewhere beside this planet. and both sound great. Sierra plays wonderfully....and she is cute. Carry on the torch, Sierra .. bravo!
It's an octave mandolin--more often used in irish music than bluegrass as it doesn't cut thru that mix of instruments as well as regular mandolin, being in roughly the same range as the guitar. But obvi she makes it work!
@MrRLBeachy - BTW, very nice video. I really appreciated the closeup of Sierra during her instrumental; most videos just stick with the static group shot. (I'm sure Christian appreciated your apology.) ;=]
You have to have the chops to play like the top bluegrass players Mark O'Conner is my favorite fiddle player, but he also won the flatpicking contest and the mandolin contest. It's great music and great musicians take to the heights.
Not a mandocello and not a Gibson. Yes it is an F style, but it is actually a Weber Octave mandolin. Mandocello scale length is 25" at MINIMUM. That is standard guitar scale. Octave mandos are around 20".
Is that a real Gibson, or did someone make it?..Can anyone describe the difference between, the Octive Mandolin, mandochello etc?...Anyone making these in the old Gibson F style?..
That's the first thing I thought of when this video started. I'm like, I know she is small, but that mandolin has GOT to be bigger than usual. MashairiYaKale says Octave Mandolin. Good to know....
Sierra Hull is like 5 foot 1, it may just look huge in comparison to her...kidding. To me it looks like a mandocello, which is a mandolin about the size of a small classical guitar.
WOW! The old Bill Monroe stuff just doesn't go out of style.
"Everything old is new again."

This is such a cool tune. Sierra's got it all going on. If you're jealous don't feel bad. You've got company.

Sierra is playing a Weber octave mandolin which is tuned exactly one octave below standard mandolin tuning. It also has a longer scale.
The girl was already amazingly good, and then she just got BETTER!
She never ceases to amaze me; very, very impressive!
Best lady mandolinist ( and now octave mandolinist) who has ever lived!
Utterly awesome!!!!!
Sierra is outstanding!
I've been watching this almost every day for a while now. Thanks for posting!
Crazy good!!

Wow, very talented!! Loved it!!
She's amazing!
Thats a Weber Octave Mandolin. I love the sound of an octave mandolin.
Wonderfull rythmic !!! :)

awesome band , thanks

I need a car jack to get my jaw off the floor.
Best comment ever😂
Playing at that speed on a standard mandolin would be impressive enough, but on an octave mandolin it's mind boggling.
It's a mandocello! They are as rare and expensive as they are gorgeous!
The same could be said of Sierra...
Octave mandolin. Same as a mandolin but longer neck and tuned an octave down
This is just insane.

It must be an octave mandolin. It looks crazy though because normall they don't look like large mandolins but this one is a trip to see.
Sierra!!!
She's the most talented bluegrass musician!
wow! this girl is impressive.
The instrument she is playing is an Octave Mandolin.
I agree, she plays it well.
Octave mandolin aka baritenor mando.
the little lady is huge lordy lordy
It's a Weber Fern Octave Mandolin!
It is a Weber Fern Octave Mandolin. :)
I'm going to go cry now.
YES, YES, YES!!!!!
GETTING MY FIX!!!!
waaay cool

so lucky
I'm not a fan of BlueGrass Music, but i like Sierra Hull and her music .She has a lot of talent

(I'm sure Christian appreciated your apology.) ;=]
grrreat!
If no one minds, think i'll call it a "Manditar".........They do some mighty fine pickin on the roll.
As great as Bill Monroe was, he could not do what Sierra does to his tune. Virtuoso at work!
You have to have the chops to play like the top bluegrass players Mark O'Conner is my favorite fiddle player, but he also won the flatpicking contest and the mandolin contest. It's great music and great musicians take to the heights.
THIS IS BADASS ACOUSTIC BLISS!
wow
Its actually her Weber octave mandolin.

Nope. Octave Mandolin or Octave Mandola (in Europe). Extreme talent on display. Mandolins, BTW, are the surviving members of the "lute" family.
The real octave mandola is the mandocello tuned one octave below a mandola.
The girl is awesome... Someone tell me what the heck type of mandolin that is? It's as big as a small guitar?
Weber Octave Mandolin
She's playing an octave mandolin, which is better suited for Celtic Folk music than bluegrass, but it still sounds good.
It is an Octave Mandolin. A Mandocello is bigger.
All the band is looking left at the fiddle player. Why isn’t the camera operator?????
Is she playing this on an octave mandolin?
Yes.
No she's just very small
@@winkcrittenden6011 It's a matter of scale and perception.
Is that a real Gibson, or did someone make it?..Can anyone describe the difference between, the Octive Mandolin, mandochello etc?...Anyone making these in the old Gibson F style?..

I saw gawdamn,, this chick is a badass..
beautiful mando cello, would have sounded cool on a mandola also.
It’s an octave mandolin, not a mandocello
@@SlightReturn666 Mandocello is tuned down a fifth from octave mandolin or one octave below a mandola.
It's a mandocello, the mandolin version of a cello. C, A, D, and G string.
Gibson F model mandocello
I believe it is a Mandola.
God. Banjo players and tuning.
Sierra Hull is like 5 foot 1, it may just look huge in comparison to her...kidding.
To me it looks like a mandocello, which is a mandolin about the size of a small classical guitar.
Mads Langer sent me here
It's either a Mandocello, or she's really tiny.
Its a Fancy medium mandolin...of course she is pretty tiny
It's a Bouzouki.
octave mandolin
Well, Thile do not have that much competition if you put it like that...
its a mandocello
Its a weber
I don't know, It sounds like a bouzouki tho.
thats a chinese guitar, and yes i sell bridges, wanna buy one.
Sorry weber Octave model
I agree, the music is great but the performance lacks charisma
If she wants to play a guitar?
Why doesn't she do that? Show me the mando.
She does play the guitar: brilliantly. She's playing a Weber Octave Mando right here in the clip.
If you think that 8 string instrument is a guitar - You're in the wrong musical genre.
gross.
