  • Universal Orlando has been in an uproar of entertainment in the theme park industry. Over the last few years, they have had the most significant investments in their attraction lineup. Just a few years ago they installed Hagrids Magical Creatures Motorbike adventure, the most expensive roller coaster ever built. As Universal continues to compete with Disney in the market, what will come next? Recently Universal has been developing their Intamin multi-launch coaster, Velocicaster. And since then it has got me thinking about the chain's vital additions of large-scale coasters. For a theme park chain, you expect them to only receive investments in the dark ride category. Instead of additions most commonly see at an amusement park-like one by cedar fair. In this video, I dive into the reasoning for Universal to invest in massive coasters.

Plot twist: Velocicoaster is the REAL replacement for the Dragons. Hagrids just needed the space, so they took out the Dragons.

That six flags commercial made me laugh, and you know visitors were down if they tried putting a dog in their commercial!

Any would take the commercial seriously if you placed a furry animal in it.

As long as it gets 5-hour lines in the middle of the week, universal will continue to invest

I've always seen it as counterprogramming to Disney. Sure, they're trying to beat Disney at their own game, but they also need to differentiate themselves a little, and one way is that they present their rides as higher-thrill than Disney's. Part of that is putting in a couple of pure thrill rides on the Six Flags/Cedar Fair caliber (only with a bit more theming and polish) to keep the thrill-seeking members of the family happy.
Now that SeaWorld is trying to rebrand the SeaWorlds themselves as big coaster parks, and you even have little players like Fun Spot stepping up, that niche in the Orlando area is more crowded. But Universal seems to be hanging on just by making theirs a little fancier.

For the price that Universal costs, these better be AMAZING rides. For goodness sakes, we easily spent 6x the cost of a Cedar Point ticket just to get in.

I still think Disney would be smart to do a 5th gate that would essentially compete with Cedar Point and make it a total coaster park.

Why would Disney need to compete with cedar point. Cedar point is insignificant to the mouse's empire.

@@GreatAmericanCoaster Maybe not necessarily "competing" with Cedar Point.
Obviously, more continuing the competition with Universal. But, having the 5th gate being a total coaster park to take away from the coasters at Universal, Sea World and essentially Busch Gardens would totally push them over the edge.

Agreed that its difficult for coasters like these to be themed and its weird for a park devoted to enhanced emersion. Would even bother adding a roller coaster meant for a place like a cedar fair park.

they really need to focus more on universal orlando, not IOA. They need to add more stuff to their main flagship park. They cant just add screen rides like jimmy fallon and FAFS
