  • Replacing the PPF on my Porsche’s rear wheel arches + ceramic coating! In this episode, we replace the paint protection film on my Porsche 911 Turbo S’ rear wheel arches. The car only has 12,000 km (7500 miles) but it’s time to replace for a higher quality XPEL Ultimate Plus self-healing PPF. And I will apply a ceramic coating on top for extra protection.

    That uneven alignment nearest the tire would drive me crazy. The original was inside the high point - the new starts out perfectly aligned near the bottom and then bleeds over the crease of the fender on the way up. My ocd would have to have it done again! Great vid as usual.

      I am just not a fan of the look or feel or PPF. Plus, as I get a brand new car every three years, and do low yearly mileage, scratches and stone chips are of no concern to me. My cars are always pristine when I bring them back to the dealership.
      But for people who keep their cars for many years, and want the ultimate scratch and rock chip protection, PPF is the only solution. I would still recommend a ceramic coating on top of the PPF, for the best of both worlds.

      @PanTheOrganizer For most top end PPF's like Xpel, Stek, Premium Sheild etc that have a hydrophobic and self healing layer, ceramic on top does interfere with its self healing ability but it does allow the film to look much better a number of years down the track, so it depends on what's more important to the user

    Xpel requires the owner use their ceramic coating only on their PPF so as to not not void their warranty. Looks great and will be interesting to see how it holds up and if yellows over the next 2 years. Amazing how much damage it prevented from your paint.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Год назад +1

      I don't really care about warranties. I'll just pay to have it replaced when needed. Plus, I like to control which products I use, and so far, I never had any issues with the top coating brands like CarPro, Gtechniq and Gyeon. They all have great coatings formulated specifically for PPF. :)
      I won't see how it holds up for more than a year though, as I will be getting a new car next year. I get a new car every three years. I like new stuff haha.

    Man those chips above and below the PPF would now drive me mad, lol. Although you could fix them yourself, and it'd make a cool video! You can really see what a great job even poor PPF does. My problem as an avid detailer is that I hate the feel of it to work on. Have some clear bra on an F-Type I just bought and it's grabby, and twice as hard to clean. Products get very streaky on it too. It does work though. Another great vid Pan!

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Yeah, I'm like you, I am just not a fan of the look or feel or PPF. I just did the rear wheel arches as Porsche's have wide hips and they get hammered by the road debris and stones.

      Yeah on Porsche 911 cars you have no choice to have that PPF to protect the rear wheel arches, especially on my Turbo S as they are even wider compared to the normal 911, and they take a beating from the road, despite it being a low mileage car.

    Hey Pan, have you ever thought about testing the coatings you have on your show whether it be ceramics, waxes, sprays, etc with a gloss meter? I know durability and water sheeting & beading is important, but for those that want the deepest and wettest look, this is content I would be interested in. Anyways, I enjoy the content you are posting. Keep it coming.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Год назад +2

      Unfortunately, the gloss meter only gives numbers, and doesn't necessarily translate to what your eyes actually see in person. I have seen gloss meters say that a product made gloss units go down, yet in person it looks super glossy and beautiful, as the gloss meter doesn't account for things like jetting and the change of appearance like a candy gloss effect. It just measures light reflection.
      And you have the opposite. A gloss meter sometimes says the product bumped the gloss units by a few points, and you can't really tell the difference in person.
      So I prefer to look at the paint in person and give my subjective opinion on it. If it looks good, I don't care what a meter says haha.

Curious why you didn't consider cutting a slightly larger piece of PPF to be able to tuck it into the door seam and only leave a much smaller visible edge as it crosses the rocker panel? Looks pretty invisible now but I would think that leading edge will start to show more with time and dust accumulation just as the old piece did.

      You have to be very careful with waxes and sealants on PPF. You'd have to ask your PPF installer what's ok to use, as most products can void the warranty of your XPEL PPF, especially since XPEL apparently came out with a new policy that only their coatings will keep your warranty valid.

    Hello Pan, in terms of cost effectiveness would you recommend using a PPF specific ceramic coating over one that is only compatible with PPF for smaller amounts of film? Which takes me to my next question of since the given shelf life of CarPro Skin is around 6 months after being opened, what do you intend to do with the remaining coating? Would leftover coating be able to be used as a topper since the lower rear portion of the vehicle takes the most road abuse?

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Год назад

      You can apply pretty much any paint coating on PPF. It's the opposite that doesn't work. You can't apply a PPF-specific coating on paint. For the remainder of the open bottle, I can either use it on another car, or throw it away if unused. It is what it is. I'm not worried about that.

      Most paint coating can usually be applied also on PPF. But check with the company of your comment to make sure.

      @@-Munditimum- No problems at all - The people that did the install - they wrapped the ppf around the edges of the hood, so you see no lines and no issues with accumulation. On the front bumper - that area - back when I used car wax (not anymore!) could accumulate wax if you were not careful to remove it. Typically you can remove with a good wash or q-tip and quick detailer if it's not dried on there too long. The PPF itself is a bit more absorbant and higher maint than the car paint - I suspect this due to being a plastic that expands/contracts with temp changes - thus allowing for the self healing - but also for things to accumulate on it. Decon and buffing has worked just fine. I do think over time the ppf is thinner now 9 years later compared to new - but so far no detectable discoloration on a midnight blue vehicle.

      LOL That's part of life. I drive my car every day including during winter months. Cars are meant to be driven. And it looks worse on camera as I did close ups with bright lighting for the video. But when you stand next to the car you don't notice them at all.
      Plus, as I get a brand new car every three years, and do low yearly mileage, scratches and stone chips are of no concern to me. But for people who keep their cars for many years, and want the ultimate scratch and rock chip protection, PPF is the only solution. I would still recommend a ceramic coating on top of the PPF, for the best of both worlds.

      @@PanTheOrganizer Maybe a larger pice of ppf than stock is the way to go ?
      Follow the bodylines and go from the door jambs and around the edge of the rear fender ?
      Porsche should have done that from the factory.

    So you’ve had the car for 2 years, driven it for 7,500 miles and you wash it twice a week?!

    I thought you weren’t a fan of PPF?

      I'm not. But the car comes with PPF installed from factory on the rear arches, as on 911 Turbo S, those are super wide hips, and in that area, as you saw in the video, it's worth while having PPF to absorb the damage from the stone chips.
      The rest of the car isn't PPF'ed though. Just the way I like it.
