- This spring if we took a trip to the southern US. we were hoping to fly out to Idaho, and get some bush flying in. Instead we ended up in the Smoky mountains the second day. The weather window never opened up. so on short notice we put a trip together that would take us down to South Carolina the outer banks back up into Ohio and home. we put this trip together in 3 hours and then started on our way. needless to say we had no plans for lodging, only a few people to reach out to to help us find exciting flying when we arrived, in hopes that we would have a good time. This trip was beyond a good time. The Stinson 108 and the super stol we're welcomed with open arms everywhere we went. people gave us their hanger floor to sleep in, access to their club houses, vehicles to use, we wanted for nothing in the entire trip. This video documents the first two days. I hope we can go back and fly Idaho sometime. but I'm sure happy I had the opportunity to fly the Smoky mountains, Central South Carolina, and the outer Banks. Stay tuned for a video or I'll thank everyone who helped us out on this journey.
Great channel
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to let us know what you'd like to see more of. Allways looking for ideas .
Looks just like Vic’s place. 🤙🏼
Vic helped us out a lot. Great visit there.
New to your channel... It's great... Only wish the names of the airports we're listed in the video so I could follow along.
I may try to include the name somehow in future videos. If you ever get up to Michigan and want to fly give us a call or drop us a line on the Facebook page. Will let you know where the fields are, we may even come out and join you.
Thanks for the video, always looking forward to the next!👍
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful country!!
You flying over Pangea. If you don’t know what that is, you should.
How awesome. We're thinking about taking a road trip to the Smoky Mountains coming up. Not as exciting as flying, but... such is life right now.
I would have enjoyed the Smokey Mountain national park. You can get a rental car out of KTYS and it's a 15 minuet car ride... You could make a day trip out of that.
A beautiful flight! Sure glad to see that Stinson on grass. Nice you two were flexible on where to go. That is one thing about flying and weather. Short strip of grass and you can go anywhere. Thanks much for posting!
As a GA pilot flexibility is paramount when on a trip.
I’m familiar with Fulton County Airport Ohio, because our plane came from this field many years ago 1958 Piper Pacer.
The previous owner was an old timer (George Whysall) . High time crop duster and aerobic pilot. He warned me and others that Fulton County airport under certain wind directions is an extremely dangerous airport. On the East end of the airport sits a clump of tall trees next to the runway. When the wind comes over them creating a vortex on the opposite side causing many planes that are perfectly stabilized on final to come down without much warning. He personally saw a C172 being smashed into the ground by this vortex. He said the trick to getting around this problem is to either fly high on final approach and then slip in past the tall trees or come in low and below the trees. We experienced this once and let me tell you, it was not fun at all. Looking forward to seeing your videos soon. Safe flight ✈️
Similar conditions exist at many airports, it's always best to stay vigilant and be ready for the go around. I really liked the atmosphere of the airport at Fulton county.
I enjoy your videos very much, and your Stinson is a beaut! I do have a question though. I know "bush/backcountry flying" starts at the manicured, purpose built grass strip level. A pilot has to first learn and perfect their backcountry approach and STOL techniques before actually taking those skills into the backcountry. When you say "Bush flying at its best"...I have no doubt you'll get there and I'm curious as to when you guys will actually move on from the grass strips any 172 pilot could go into and land on some sandbars, gravelbars, or some other unprepared surfaces that your planes are capable of?
When we go out west. The laws in Michigan are not very aviation friendly so we end up in a lot of peoples backyards. Some are manicured, some are barely mowed, so are just guys farm fields. It would be great to have the ability to use public use land here but we can't. If we were ever to dare such an adventure in this part of the nation I sure wouldn't post the evidence.
Gotcha...makes sense.
im pobably not watching your vids in chronological order but im really enjoying them thanks for posting guys love the nicknames lol might call myself shamrock lol
The Irish background might earn you "Shamrock" :-) Again thanks for watching.
As to your comment..." us out west have balls" , take a look at L00 on NAV... Big mountains, but lots of room to land...LOL.
Some areas are alright, but I was flying out in the Cascades and there are not a lot of option.
Great videos. I recently purchased a S108-3 with the Franklin 165. I am central Oklahoma,, Are you planning on making the Stinson meet up in Kansas? Would enjoy asking you some questions about your plane,, as I learn more about my airplane..
I have not made the Stinson summit in Kansas. I'd like to at some point and the guys who go are fantastic. I do go to Oshkosh, That's not happening this year either. congratulations on the Stinson that you're going to love it it's one of the best flying airplanes ever built.
Scooter, those 2 grass strips in the North Carolina mountains looked familiar. Which ones were they?
One was Brasstown. I forget the name of the other.
Thanks for another awesome video Scott. I have a question. Assuming you have a Scott 3200 tailwheel assy. Do you run your springs slack or firm. In other words when you break detent is it hard or real easy? Thanks.
It's moderate. I need a little brake to make the tailwheel castor. Not much, but I don't want it to cast her in a crosswind.
Great video! I hope to purchase a Stinson 108 soon. Can you share what camera and mount you use to capture the 360 deg. view from in front of the right wing? Also, how do you mount your cockpit camera - cut the headliner and clamp to the frame? You should make a presentation next year at the 101 years of Stinson celebration at AirVenture!
I use GoPro mounts throughout the aircraft. I use the handlebar mounts on the aircraft frame for the front and cockpit views. on the overhead I use a standard GoPro mount stuck non-permanently to the speaker / dome light assembly. The 360 cam is just mounted to a carbon fiber tube that's non-permanently attached to the strut.
Nice vid! I'd like to get one of those hats eh! Grew up in St. Ignace but the military dropped me off in south Texas. We fly our turbo 182 out of San Antonio's Boerne Stage Airfield (5C1) and travel all over. I have a fledgling channel called One-Eighty-Two Flyer that I do for fun. But realize I need more camera views to achieve better content. The editing and audio just takes so long to do.....LOL! That VR360 camera on a pole definitely offers a different level of immersion. Enjoy watching you guys, keep it up!
Keep in touch. Next time we get hats made we will let you know. Airplane adventures.are the best!
You call those mountains lol
It was Smokey mountain nation park... There is always bigger hills, well unless you fly in the Himalayas.
