    This is a standalone AI enhancement mod, intended to redress some of the cheese tactics that allow the player to declaw enemies and make them less scary than they should be. The core identities of each enemy type are unchanged, but responses are tweaked to allow them to better challenge the player. Pipe Hybrids and Rumblers will no longer wait for the player to come to a stop before attempting to attack, Rumblers use a greater variety of attacks with fixed hitboxes, the Pipe Hybrid's laughably slow vertical swings are brought in line with their lightning fast horizontal swings, the lackadaisical Grenade Hybrids will now actually attempt to hit the player, Midwives back away from the player more quickly and ward them off with swift melee swipes, Cyborg Assassins, Shotgun Hybrids, and Monkeys are harder to lock down with melee stagger, and Spiders now use their leap as a lunging attack.
    All gameplay footage is with base stats (Agility 1, Strength 1), except the Pipe Hybrid footage which has the Speedy O/S upgrade applied. Mod changes are marked in italics. Footage is from version 1.00 beta, features subject to change.

    Let me speak as someone who just played this for the first time and on hard mode. Let me also speak as someone who jumped out of his chair and put his hands on the wall to summon all the hope and willpower he had left, when he kept being repeatedly violated at the end on The Many. This is not an upgrade.

      Dudes right no skill involved in tank spam. SS1 was balanced. SS2 was garbage in the gameplay front. Great story and shodan moments, coolest part was the last level what’s that tell ya?

      Ehh... It was fine as long as you picked like, two specific builds. But yes, SS2's game design was all over the place, since the studio that made the first game had split and the developers were constantly arguing with each other.

      @@joechimpzeecom I was exaggerating a bit, but the builds I had in mind were guns/hacking (which most agree to be the best build from my experience) and psi/hacking
      It is easy to go into the game blind and ruin your game because you thought that skills like Repair would be important or Maintenance wouldn't be important.
      Also, I feel like RUclips posted this comment in the wrong thread again. That happens to me sometimes for whatever reason. My reply doesn't seem particularly relevant to this conversation.

    This game is phenomenal and the community is doing its best to optimize the game to its core.
    This is truly a magnificent achievement, I will cherish this moment of salvation knowing I am within the few who experienced such a spectacular game :)

    Thank you so much for making this mod! It adds a little extra difficulty but still feels reasonably vanilla and balanced. Unlike the Secmod approach of throwing you a shitton of Rumblers in your way near the end game.

    This is really cool. The game isn't challenging to me even on impossible at this point, it's a shame I'm already on the rickenbacker now in my current replay. It looks like the pipe hybrids use more various attacks now too. In my experience they use the laughable slow swing a lot which makes them really easy to fight (I'm sure I've seen the guards in theif pull the exact same stunt with their swords, hm...) but the cool challenging attacks are seldom used. I love how the pipe hybrids work sometimes, they chain attacks if they hit the player and sometimes break stuff around them too, it's really cool.

      I tried to expand the enemies' fighting capabilities within the existing behavior system, predominantly by changing animation speed and priority in the motion database. What's been particularly interesting for me to see is how much this reveals the strength of the original AI system, which was hampered by poor tuning but nonetheless offers a lot of innate cleverness in their responses to player action. A lot of people seem to think I added a dodge to the Pipe Hybrid, but that was always there, as were their special attack strings, it's just that players seldom experienced these behaviors on account of Pipe Hybrids getting locked in slow uppercuts while they get beaten to death.
      The next version of Scary Monsters will come packaged with an addon that enables the Cyborg Assassins to wield Laser Rapiers up close, as well as a bunch of improvements to the Rumbler which make him much more threatening of a boxer. I'll release it once I find a fix for the player crouching up to Midwives...

      @@rosodudersd260 Interestingly enough I never really ran into the pipe hybrid's dodge until my latest playthrough (monkeys too). I feel like there are a lot of things wrong with this game that could be attributed to bad "tuning" like some aspects of weapon balance, so it doesn't really surprise me they had a good AI system that has just not had the finishing touches it needed.
      I didn't know about the midwife crouch strategy, but looking it up, it seems like this particular problem requires a solution outside of the existing animations cause it seems like none of their melee attacks reach that low.
      I was thinking though that this mod fixes some backpedalling cheesing of melee enemies, but what about the situation with shotgun hybrids and robots who just always retreat when a player is hugging them? They don't have a melee attack but they can shoot at the player right in front of them when they can't retreat anymore. I always thought it's dumb how the shotgun hybrids or bots can be cheesed so easily.
      So then I was thinking if it is possible to just make these enemies use their ranged attack sometimes while being hugged instead of always backpedalling? I guess the chance doesn't have to be 100% even with enemies with no melee attack, but I think if there was a significant chance that the hybrid or robot will shoot even if the player is hugging them, then people won't be able to consistently neuter them this way anymore. Maybe if the midwife could be adjusted to sometimes shoot at a player hugging them instead of always trying to slap them, that could solve the issue with the crouch cheese, assuming the midwife can aim at the crouching player. Sure such a change would make meleeing these enemies less consistently doable, but that's part of the point of the mod isn't it?

      ​@@mad_scientist5597 The solution I'm seeking for crouching in front of Midwives is precisely that -- I want to script them to just shoot the player if they try to cheese in this way. I have crouch detection figured out, but getting them to execute a ranged attack (outside of the internal AI decision making process) is non-obvious. Still trying to find a good method for that.
      Regarding shotgun hybrids and big robots, I think having them back up while the player is whacking at them in melee range is actually desirable. The threat of shotgun hybrids is undodgeable chip damage at range, so a player who gets close has earned their melee attacks (I did give them faster backstep and pain stagger and slightly quicker attack speed so they still retain an edge compared to the more aggressive pipe hybrid). Big robots already counter melee strategies by exploding on death, and circlestrafing to their right to avoid their gun arm takes some practice. In both cases, group encounters make dealing with these enemies a lot more challenging as well.

    Only looking glass studio have such extreme sound quality design. System shock 2 and Thief have the most scary spiders l have ever seen. They made me slightly uncomfortable seeing them for the first time and always a pleasure seeing them again, knowing full well no game can surpass them. Even their sounds are just right. To think for some people to request mods to disable such spiders in these games, mean how good of a job they did. Actually, it is has been quite awhile since l have seen spiders in video games, actual spiders not human spiders.

      Haha I play a game called Satisfactory. Kinda like a first person exploration based Factorio. But there's these little spider things that look more like aliens than spiders. But the game has an arachnophobia setting that changes all the spiders into floating jpegs of a cat that it like 100% more scary than the spiders haha. You just see these flat cat pictures jumping at your face like a nextbot or something lol

    There was an unfinished difficulty mod kind of like Stalker's misery mod that I can't remember the name of. In that mod they added melee attacks to the shotgun hybrids. Absolutely brutal.

    Awesome mod! Can't wait to add it to my next Impossible run for a real challenge. One suggestion: its too easy to lean around corners and snipe turrets. Could you make it so they can fire back at you when you're leaning and only exposing a small part of yourself?

      Not really, AI targeting and firing is handled in a deeper level of the engine code than I have access to. Besides, I think that's kind of the intended gameplay with turrets, and without it areas like the hallway to the Cargo Bays would be needlessly difficult for anyone without Hack.

      I did once I realized they were completely toothless. You have to be negligent or very bad at the wrench timing to get bitten by a vanilla spider.
      A major goal of the mod is to push skilled players away from melee cheese and towards using their resources (guns, ammo, psi hypos) more. Buffing the spider so it's as dangerous up close as it first appears is a component of that.

    I'm really surprised about the spiders leap attack not doing any damage. I swear I've been hit by it before 🤔 It has been a long time since i last played it in vanilla.

      I was pretty shocked when I found out. Looked in the motion data and yep, no attack flags. Part of the reason may have been that the spider immediately resets to the ground once it hits the player, which I hid by having the attack only count on the descent anyway.

    I need this but is it compatible with Enhanced Edition or just compatible with the original Classic one ?

      Like the majority of other mods, it will only be compatible with the original SS2 patched with SS2Tool (you may be able to apply the SS2Tool patch to the EE retail release, but it will run on a separate executable without any of the EE features).
      It may be possible that the edited motion database in the mod can be dropped into the EE version to get some of the changes to enemy animation speeds, but you won't get some other fixes and improvements.

    When are you going to enhance the mechs, shotgun hybrids, worm & and fly annelids, and servant robot?

      Shotgun hybrids (and monkeys) got some minor buffs between this trailer and the first release, and there have been plenty of AI improvements in subsequent versions for other enemies, particularly Spiders, Cyborg Assassins, and Rumblers. In general though, the rule was if it ain't broke, don't fix it -- droids are already very effective at their jobs in boxing the player in with ranged projectiles, as are worms and bees at threatening the player up close.

    I wonder if some of the more broken aspects of the original games AI was more Dark jank and the games somewhat rushed development in between the Thief games

      Absolutely. I talked about it in another comment reply, but the AI system is actually brilliant stuff, not just for Thief's stealth but also for SS2's melee and ranged combat. The problem is just that it was just undertuned, so enemies suffer from the exploits you see in the video. Most of the mod's changes are just tweaks to enemy parameters and animations to allow the aggressive & reactive AI to shine.

      @@rosodudersd260 likely they erred on the side of easier to kill enemies, a similar issue exists in half life 1 where the AI is extremely dangerous, but had their damage and health hamstrung to make the game actually enjoyable.

      Depends on your experiences with other games, I suppose. If you like a challenge, have played a few FPP melee games, can handle the survival resource management aspect, then sure.

      Nah. They already do a lot of damage (with predictive leading projectiles; the only other enemy to do this is the Cyborg Assassin) and their resurrection ability makes them particularly pesky to deal with.
      However, in the future I hope to add more encounters with psi reavers in my other mod, SS2-RSD, probably only on higher difficulties.
