I read: At the season's end, when the rhubarb starts dying down, each piece that is falling to the ground will carry acidity in it. With time, acidity from the pieces that are composted to the soil reduces the surrounding soil's pH'. The stalks must be a healthy red to cook something fully flavorful with it. It seems your pale stalks did taste ok though, so good for you.

My grandfather used to grow alot of rhubarb, but he would put an old bucket with a hole in the bottom upside down over his, so the leaves poked out the top and the stems stayed in the dark. That way they went red and tasted sweeter.

Anna my dear... your rhubarb has gone to seed. This is good news really because it means more new plants eventually🥳🥳🥳. Maybe your new plants would appreciate a shadier situation with more moisture. In UK, it is not advisable to pull Rhubarb after the end of July. Incidentally, you pull Rhubarb...you don't 'snip' it. I always love to see your vlogs. Thanks for sharing. xxx

Anna please buy a gardening book if you want to have a vegetable garden as some parts of vegetables can be poisonous or upset your stomach. Rhubarb is know to upset your stomach and parts of them are poisonous so arm yourself with as much info as you can get. You can change the colour of the Hydrangeas yourself if you want, there’s something else you can try. Good luck with all your plans. Tell your husband to talk to the neighbours about the animal control they will know how to help without shooting something or someone especially the bore.

@@HowToRenovateAChateau don't worry about having eaten the rhubarb late in summer. the sayings that it shouldn't be eaten later in summer due to higher oxalic acid are myths. and in fact the leaves, which contain far more oxalic acid than the stems which we eat, still contain less than spinach, which we don't consider poisonous at all! i guess what i'm saying is - that crumble looked delicious and i'd have happily eaten it. :-)

True, humans who mark their territory, like animals do, do sometimes benefit with successes such as discouraging pesky varmints from eating the garden. Not sure about the boars though. Perhaps, next time there is a local boar hunt, send your thank you's to the hunters with a nice picnic. Without weed pie, of course. Or, perhaps, depending on the type of weed you use.

I have seen your second grant chateau tour lately with the snowy calm scenes in the beginning of the video in which Philipp (I hope that is how his name is spelled) narrated something. I absolutely adore it and I kept on replaying one particular sequence. Maybe you could film about an hour or two hours of video footage about the chateau from the outside or/and the inside, accentuating it with calm classical music as you do normally. I think it would particularly be lovely in winter! Of course that is different from what you "usually" upload but I think it is worth a try, I would watch it and replay it whilst doing homework and reading! :)

I live next to a forest and major river near Toronto and have to deal with a variety of wild animals. The deer and coyotes are kept away by the fences but rabbits and raccoons can be destructive pests in the garden. Not a few nuts, but large garbage cans full of nuts. My bike had nuts in between the spokes, the lawn tractor was covered in nuts and like a comedy movie the nuts poured out of a cupboard when opened. What a mess! At least they don’t smell like the skunk that lived under our old shed. Skunk smell is something that is truly horrible and lingers on whatever it touches. 🦨

Philipp, I also have a deer problem, the best way to keep them off your garden I've ever found is to buy a livestock salt lick for sheep, and place it somewhere out of the way along the edge of your property. The deer are eating the bark off your trees because they're looking for minerals. If you give them the salt lick they'll prioritize the salt over everything else in your garden, especially as we move towards the fall. The second best option is, unfortunately and in all seriousness, the hunting rifle, If your town allows such things. My town hires bow hunters every year to quietly control the population. This is something we have to do because we've pushed out the wolves and mountain lions that would normally keep the deer population in check, so if we don't kill the deer then they destroy everything, gardens and natural ecosystem alike.

How to harvest rhubarb- you need to pull it from the base of the clump so as to keep the sweetest and most flavorful red bottom of the stalk. Never cut the red off. Some varieties have a green stem and some have a red stem. Yours appears to be the green variety. When it has gone to flower it is past its season, though you can cut the flower stalk before it bolts. I am sure it tasted fabulous. You can't go wrong with rhubarb. Gardens are a learning game. Yours looks prolific. Next year you can conquer the weeds. You two are the most perfectly balanced couple! Phillip always makes me laugh, and you have the most brilliant children! My favorite way of cooking Rhubarb is to add 1/2 cup water & 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon in a saucepan. Add suger or honey to taste. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. I end up canning and freezing the sauce. We love the sauce over vanilla or cocoanut ice cream or in a custard pie. I hope you enjoy. That puppy! What a wonderful addition to your family. The girls are clearly smitten. Your kitchen is going to be stunning. Now, the colour choice question. Normally I am all in for green and love the shade you chose. However, the red the Phillip is voting for really pops the red in your grandma’s painting. And, it’s a surprising colour, I think, when you walk into the kitchen. Go for red. And if you really cannot live with it you can always repaint.

I haven't even finished the video and the video is 2 years old now but it got me thinking back to when I lived on a farm and had a dog. The squirrels didn't dare set foot on the ground on our property let alone deer grazing on our trees - she never caught any of the animals but she was enough of a deterrent for them to up sticks and move elsewhere.

Beautiful rhubarb! Don’t cut them, just twist them, it’s the best method for the plants. And don’t harvest more than 2/3, that gives the plant energy to survive until next year. Best luck! Thanks for sharing this with us! Blessings.

I’m not sure if you will read this due to the time that has past. You can try solar motion detecter lights out in the yard to scare off the boar and deer. As for the garden saving your hair from your brushes and putting them around outer edges of the garden will help keep rabbits away.

So nice and enjoyable. Nice to see Marie and your lovely daughters. Too bad about your lawn, hope things settle down, I know skunks in Canada will rip up an entire lawn looking for grubs. My parent’s lawn looked like had hardly any sod and grass by the time they were finished or summer and all had to be planted again. Yes, a big Pyrenees Dog might help my friends live in N.Y. state on an acre of land lots of deer feeding and their dog is a Pyrenees and the deer don’t seem to be bothered.

Hi Philipp& Anna, wonderful vlog! Philipp you don't need a hunting license for a water gun 😂 ...just make it a super soaker one! Your little girl, when she was looking at the hydrangea's & saw Mickey Mouse...the opening outline looked like Mickey Mouse...great eye she has! Marie's flower arrangement was just so pretty, she always delivers! Papa and daughter installing the 'smart door bell' so cute...she has such a great personality...love it! You guys are such fun parents, they are going to have wonderful fun childhood memories! Thank you for sharing, take really good care of yourselves, stay safe! Much love Kathy x (Ontario, Canada)

Another thoroughly enjoyable episode. By the way just wanted to let you know that yes that was rhubarb. Rhubarb doesn’t always have to be red or pink there are green varieties as well and just as a pointer for the future you should never cut your rhubarb because it doesn’t grow back as good the next season you should always pull your rhubarb from its roots. Remember it’s a tuber and if you cut it you’re essentially killing it. I would love to come over next year and do your garden for you you have such a great place there

I was just about to say the same thing. I just harvested all of our rhubarb. I have two varieties - the red and the green. They are both good. I am trying out a recipe for rhubarb wine. Yummy
