thanks for watching me and Nick Bowcott's top 10 clean tone metal riffs! Always a pleasure to hang out with Nick, mash some ropes, and soak up some music history. Whats YOUR top 10?!
I feel like a lot of modern metal guys totally disregard the clean tone. An absolute laundry list of my favorite riffs are clean and it totally makes everything perfect. Well played Uncle Ben and Grandpa Nick! Love it!
Nick "Simon" Bowcott is a great hang, and congrats for nailing all your riffs on the first take! You guys make a great Team, Ben is killer as usual and Nick's stories are awesome.
I always like the clean section in 'To Live is to Die' that comes in half way through the song. It's the same part they play live on the 'Live Shit Binge and Purge" Seattle show, right before they go into a Master of Puppets.
It's actually so nice to sit here listening to all these clean music pieces that are from hard pulverizing songs. Makes you realize the small clean passages could easily have been songs on their own, they're so good.
Fuckin' hell, these Uncle Ben + Grandpa Nick videos are my absolute fave. Can we not at LEAST make this an every-other-monthly series? 😁🤞 Was super hype to see some love for the descending D minor part during the This Love solo! I've genuinely never heard ANYONE mention it before and I've always adored it! Also this for some reason reminded me of a thing my band used to do in college called "Cleanthrax", where we'd randomly jam through a bunch of entire Anthrax songs, with completely clean tones and single notes only. Highly recommend 😉
Agreed…. The mix direction on O;M was unique at the time, given how almost harsh the mids were, and the crack of the snare on Rockenfield’s kit. I did a cover of I Don’t Believe in Love, but never found the bass tone Jackson produced on the final mix…. ruclips.net/video/1srINcduskk/видео.html
I absolutely love the energy you guys have, it's a joy to watch, how 2 players should be with each other, humble, yet with humour, I could watch you 2 for hours.
Guys, this was amazing! The favorite is "Pull Me Under". That then Ghost and Opeth can make clean tones dark is no wonder. In Sweden, folk music has always had a sad tone and even children's songs can be in minor. Great episode!👍❤
Metallica's cleans are as iconic as the heavy stuff, if not more. Also Mastodon's Asleep In The Deep or Sleeping Giant*sleeppun* ah, and Crack The Skye
Metallica - Sanitarium Dream Theater - Pull me under Tool - Vicarious Fear Factory - Final Exit Ozzy - Diary of a madman The Cult - She sells sanctuary Devin Townsend - Ki Alice in Chains - Rooster Weezer - The world has turned and left me here A perfect circle - The outsider
Metallica - To Live is to Die: The little riff they do in the middle where they cut off the other instruments for a bit. They do play it with distortion first, but still. Quite possibly the most beautiful thing they've ever written. It's at 4:58 in the song.
Killer of Giants - Jake E Lee Women in Love - EVH Secrets - EVH Top Jimmy - EVH Is This Love - John Sykes Ship of Fools - Robert Plant Big Log - Robert Plant Last In Line - Vivian Campbell Shake My Tree - Coverdale/Page
It's always fun to see this kind of "best of" lists with you and Nick and find out how at least 50% of your picks are matching with my picks, it was like that on 80's and 70's riffs lists, and also with this list :) I would also add "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Warrant, "To Bid You Farewell" by Opeth, "The Ballad" by Testament, "Laid to Rest" by the late Alexi Laiho's lesser known band Sinergy, and for some more "modern" stuff "Say Goodnight" by Bullet for My Valentine
10 - Killer of Giants - Lee/Ozzy 9 - Fade to Black - Metallica 8 - Crystal Ann - Annihilator 7 - Intro to Reality - Anthrax 6 - Cemetary Gates - Pantera 5 - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Metallica 4 - Under Siege - Sepultura 3 - Still Loving You - Scorpions 2 - You Can't Kill Rock 'n Roll - Rhoads/Ozzy 1 - Diary of a Madman - Rhoads/Ozzy
@@lowdz68really? I’m def not talking shit, nor trying to take anything away from it, but it’s not that hard to play. Beautiful song. And again, no disrespect intended, whatsoever
My list would have had Hallowed Be Thy Name, A Question of Heaven, The Bard's Song, 46&2, In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion, Jotunheim (Moonsorrow), Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer, Flying Whales, Nobody's Here, Where Dead Angels Lie, and Face of Melinda on it.
Uncle Ben I always enjoy the video's you do with the great Nick Bowcott. & I enjoy your solo video's as well. I always look forward to seeing your new video's & I enjoy learning the different techniques that you teach. I appreciate everything you do. I hope you have a peaceful Monday. Peace Chuckguitarist87
I enjoy the videos with you and the iconic Nick. Yes, Twister does still rule and I have used that analogy of Armageddon and Deep Impact so I got a kick outta that. I also use Volcano and Dante’s Peak analogy. Keep rocking dude
Sabbath - Planet Caravan(I suppose this one is cheating but I love this song) Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo Judas Priest - Dreamer Deceiver Jake E Lee - Killer of Giants Testament - The Legacy Scorpions - You Give Me All I Need Black Label Society - Bridge to Cross Testament - Return to Serenity Pantera - Cemetery Gates Metallica - Anything clean to be honest. Lol
Nice list. Though I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m not familiar with that priest song you mentioned. Never been the biggest fan, but always had huge respect/appreciation for them. Gonna go check that out after this
Been on a kick watching Ben's video with Nick and absolutely loved the 70s/80s riffs vid, if you ever meet up again with him I'd love to see a UK vs. USA Best 90s Riffs or Best 60s Riffs vid to round up the series. Great vid as always, man, and here's my Top 10 of some of my personal favourite clean riffs in metal songs 1. Master of Puppets - Metallica (Instrumental/bridge section before James Hetfield's solo) 2. Aerials - System of a Down (Intro/chorus riff) 3. Call Me Little Sunshine - Ghost (Intro/Verse riff) 4. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden (Intro/verse 1) 5 Pull Me Under - Dream Theater (Intro) 6. Cemetery Gates - Pantera (Verse riff) 7. Endless Rain - X Japan (Verse/chorus riff - Highly recommend checking this band out, great band and definitely one of the best Japanese hard rock/metal bands and my personal favourite) 8. Paradise City - Guns 'N' Roses (Intro riff) 9. A Tout Le Monde - Megadeth (Intro riff) 10. Welcome Home - Coheed & Cambria (Intro riff)
God, I love this series so much :) My pick is the opening clean part of Seasons in the Abyss. I'm not a big Slayer fan, but I absolutely adore that song and that clean riff just sounds hunted.
yeeeeeeesssss! There's something real satisfying about playing a low action Jackson with screaming high output and compression through a clean rig with delay, chorus and reverb.
Working Hard At Hardly Working!! Strraight to the nearest pub My fave clean tune has gotta be SECRETS by our beloved Mr Eddie. From my native Wales - I reckon A DESIGN FOR LIFE by the Manics is a blinding tune. Nice noisy vocal too . Cheers from Spain
Wow what a blast. Love Kills by the Vinni Vincent Invasion sounds a lot like Yngwie's song Dreaming. It was actually my my love for Love Kills that got me into listen to Yngwie because of the similarities. Way back when Elm Street's Dream Warriors was in theaters and MTV played videos.
Tony Iommi has a lot of easy but yet killer clean riffs even from the very beginning of the band : Sleeping village Planet Caravan Embryo, Orchid Spiral Architect The Writ She’s gone Children of the sea The sign of the southern cross Born Again Scarlet pimpernel Night wing ,when death calls Odin’s court, feels good to me Too late, Cross of thorns,The hand that rock the cradle I won’t cry for you, kiss of death There are others of course. Always easy but working well and sometimes really unusual chords shapes.
Here’s a few off the top of my head: Tesla - Song and Emotion, Sabbath - Children of the Sea, just about anything by Triumph but I’ll go with the obvious - Magic Power, Dio - Last in Line
Black Sabbath - Children of the sea Metallica - Sanitarium Iron Maiden - Children of the damned Overkill - Soulitude Testament - The Legacy Megadeth - Good Mourning, Diadems Grave Digger - Legion of the lost Slayer - Seasons in the abyss Ozzy Osbourne - Killer of Giant (because you already mentionned Diary) Scorpions - Always Somewhere
I love the verse riff to Priestess by Periphery. A new favorite of mine is Stench of an Iron Age by Black Crown Initiate and Pisces by Jinjer. Here’s a few more from the top of my head: Darkness Within by Machine Head. Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil. Ghost Prototype II Deus Ex Machina by Scar Symmetry Vermilion pt. 2 by Slipknot Hollow by Submersed Cruel Melody and I Have a Need by Black Light Burns
Great vid Ben & Nick. I think a really heavy riff that uses a clean sound is the Communication breakdown riff by Led Zeppelin. It may not be "metal enough" for your video but it freaking HEAVY.
I love dark melodic type guitar playing I can spend a whole day getting lost in putting something together or learning parts. Planet Caravan & She’s gone both from Black Sabbath sit really high on my list , there’s just something about that dark classical guitar sound that takes me to a whole different realm …..

You need to check out Evergrey from Sweden, thank me later
I love all the content you are doing with Nick. The man's a legend and he's got a very unique playing style, I wish we could hear more of him.
Nick plays in a band called D-Day
I feel like a lot of modern metal guys totally disregard the clean tone. An absolute laundry list of my favorite riffs are clean and it totally makes everything perfect. Well played Uncle Ben and Grandpa Nick! Love it!

Totally agree. One of my all time fav clean/melodic parts
Nick is such a metal legend.
Tragically rarely analyzed/mentioned, the work of Jeff Waters of Annihilator. His clean stuff is very original and intriguing
Late, but the word salad clean part, Phoenix Rising, Sounds Good to Me, and Crystal Ann are amazing!
Yeah Jeff doesn't get enough credit.
It's actually so nice to sit here listening to all these clean music pieces that are from hard pulverizing songs. Makes you realize the small clean passages could easily have been songs on their own, they're so good.
7:42 This Love was actually on Vulgar Display Of Power! So glad that song made the list! Would've been nice to see Floods make it, but oh well 😄
Ben and Nick make some great collaborations

Great call on amazing bass and drum sounds from Queensryche. I can’t think of anything I’ve heard that tops those on Mindcrime and Empire.
Agreed…. The mix direction on O;M was unique at the time, given how almost harsh the mids were, and the crack of the snare on Rockenfield’s kit.

The smack of the snare is incredible.
Clean tone metal is underrated
Agree
I absolutely love the energy you guys have, it's a joy to watch, how 2 players should be with each other, humble, yet with humour, I could watch you 2 for hours.
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Metallica - the 2 songs I use to dial in a clean tone on my guitar.
Guys, this was amazing! The favorite is "Pull Me Under". That then Ghost and Opeth can make clean tones dark is no wonder. In Sweden, folk music has always had a sad tone and even children's songs can be in minor. Great episode!👍❤
Such a great video. Nick is always fun to watch.
"C'est si bon"! That's exactly what I was thinking when watching your channel.
Thanks from France.
Metallica's cleans are as iconic as the heavy stuff, if not more. Also Mastodon's Asleep In The Deep or Sleeping Giant*sleeppun* ah, and Crack The Skye
Like the riffs, love the stories.

Thanks once again Ben for such a good content. Cheers from Amsterdam, mate. 🍻🤝🎶
This was great. Touched on many songs we've done and others well worth exploring further. Hats off to Ben and Nick!
Another awesome collaboration by two awesome guitar greats!
Awesome video and GREAT clean tones!
That was Brilliant! Nick is cool as hell--I met back in the late '80s at the Foundations Forum. Coolest cat ever!
That was fun. Thanks guys.
Metallica - To Live is to Die: The little riff they do in the middle where they cut off the other instruments for a bit. They do play it with distortion first, but still. Quite possibly the most beautiful thing they've ever written. It's at 4:58 in the song.
Love that song!
For that exact riff,it's awesome!
100% and those swells, too. Then James’s beautiful solo on top. Glorious ear candy, for sure
Halfway through this video, I picked up my guitar and created some new dark clean riffs...
Thanks for the inspiration !

They may have chosen Killer of Giants but who would want to try and play it!
@@lowdz68really? I’m def not talking shit, nor trying to take anything away from it, but it’s not that hard to play. Beautiful song. And again, no disrespect intended, whatsoever
@@rferguson3 the intro where Jake uses his thumb as a capo? saw him do it live and was very impressed.
Freakin great video y’all. Thanks for this. And for introducing me to a bunch of new bands to listen to.
These videos are a blast. Nick Bowcott is an amazing player too!
Great video!

Really enjoying these! Really entertaining, guys.
I love that you chose Dirge for November! One of their best quiet parts, I like to play
I enjoy the videos with you and the iconic Nick. Yes, Twister does still rule and I have used that analogy of Armageddon and Deep Impact so I got a kick outta that. I also use Volcano and Dante’s Peak analogy. Keep rocking dude
Such a terrific 'tube duo 🤘
“Simple lines, intertwining”. Bozart!
A fantastic sounding technique cello players use is the octave trill it sounds amazing when you have powerful hammer ons
Metal Church!! Those albums with David Wayne are fantastic, what a unique and amazing voice.
Great pick Nick!! Big fan of Grim Reaper also
Sabbath - Planet Caravan(I suppose this one is cheating but I love this song)
Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo
Judas Priest - Dreamer Deceiver
Jake E Lee - Killer of Giants
Testament - The Legacy
Scorpions - You Give Me All I Need
Black Label Society - Bridge to Cross
Testament - Return to Serenity

Nice list. Though I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m not familiar with that priest song you mentioned. Never been the biggest fan, but always had huge respect/appreciation for them. Gonna go check that out after this
I need to start practicing again.
I am very very impressed. The first song I thought of was "Watch the Children Pray", but thought no way will they pick that. What an amazing song.
In "Beyond the Realms of Death," I always hear Styx's "Suite Madame Blue."
Love the list. Couple of surprises in there. Would have loved to hear Suite Sister Mary, or ...And Justice for All. But, great lists from both of you.
The first riff that came to mind when starting this vid was, "This Love." That riff made me an instant life long Pantera fan. Party on Ben!
Been on a kick watching Ben's video with Nick and absolutely loved the 70s/80s riffs vid, if you ever meet up again with him I'd love to see a UK vs. USA Best 90s Riffs or Best 60s Riffs vid to round up the series. 10. Welcome Home - Coheed & Cambria (Intro riff)
7:40 he meant Vulgar Display of Power
song #5 on Far Beyond Driven is Good Friends and A Bottle of Pills
Love these videos you two do together. If anybody ever needs to woo Nick, minor 7 chords and descending chromatic runs will go far 😜
Nice arms Ben, man's been workin' out! Great vid. Thanks for sharing ✌🏻
And you could show us how to ride that Opeth wave man.
Thanks dude! I’ve got a Dirge lesson from a couple years back, check it out!
Yup, found it. It's still there 😅 Thanks for pointing out. Love those WW intro songs ✌🏻🤣👍🏻You all have a great day/night.
I always liked "Save All Your Love" from Great White.
Couple of clean intro favorites:
Still Loving You - Scorpions
Last In Line - Dio
Also, would love to see a top list of acoustic metal riffs.
"We'll Burn the Sky" for Scorpions
Legendary Ben Eller in Indiana and it isn't even covered in the local news is wild to me.
So great to see another lefty!!
I have never heard anyone else say humans being was an amazing song!!! So overlooked
Beginning of Empty Words by Death and Ghosts of Midwinter Fires by Agalloch.
Man, forgot how good All New Materials is. Got that signature "summer vibes"-sound to it, atleast for me. Fantastic song, fantastic band!
Queensryche EPIC bass tone is amazing.. Tobias 5 string with Cartalini pick ups with those ESP guitars is the BEST
Great job on Pendulous Skin!
Working Hard At Hardly Working!! Strraight to the nearest pub

Tony Iommi has a lot of easy but yet killer clean riffs even from the very beginning of the band :
Sleeping village
Planet Caravan
Embryo, Orchid
Spiral Architect
The Writ
She’s gone
Children of the sea
The sign of the southern cross
Born Again
Scarlet pimpernel
Night wing ,when death calls
Odin’s court, feels good to me
Too late,
Cross of thorns,The hand that rock the cradle
I won’t cry for you, kiss of death
There are others of course.
Always easy but working well and sometimes really unusual chords shapes.
Here’s a few off the top of my head: Tesla - Song and Emotion, Sabbath - Children of the Sea, just about anything by Triumph but I’ll go with the obvious - Magic Power, Dio - Last in Line
This should be a fun video
I already like that first Ghost riff
Black Sabbath - Children of the sea
Metallica - Sanitarium
Iron Maiden - Children of the damned
Overkill - Soulitude
Testament - The Legacy
Megadeth - Good Mourning, Diadems
Grave Digger - Legion of the lost
Slayer - Seasons in the abyss
Ozzy Osbourne - Killer of Giant (because you already mentionned Diary)
Scorpions - Always Somewhere
Robin Trower live was recorded live in an EMPTY arena!
Oh wow. Never knew that. Very interesting. Love Trower, tho
I'd also like to add two from Jorn:
My Road
and
The World I See
I think both are excellent, just not so widely known
30:31 That would've been a killer choice!
Mikael is one of the most creative guitarists/musicians I’ve ever heard. People sleep on opeth
I love the verse riff to Priestess by Periphery. A new favorite of mine is Stench of an Iron Age by Black Crown Initiate and Pisces by Jinjer.
Here’s a few more from the top of my head:
Darkness Within by Machine Head.
Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil.
Ghost Prototype II Deus Ex Machina by Scar Symmetry
Vermilion pt. 2 by Slipknot
Hollow by Submersed
Cruel Melody and I Have a Need by Black Light Burns
System of a Down had some pretty cool clean riffs on the first album
Without a doubt, Daron really did have a knack for writing great clean riffs in addition to his usual heavy distorted tone
Dream Theater - A change of Seasons
Disturbed - Remnants
Ozzy - Mama I'm coming home
System of a Down - Chop Suey!
Great vid Ben & Nick. I think a really heavy riff that uses a clean sound is the Communication breakdown riff by Led Zeppelin. It may not be "metal enough" for your video but it freaking HEAVY.
It was definitely heavy for the time, yeah
I think The sleep by pantera is a clean riff worth mentioning. Also, death voice of the soul
I love dark melodic type guitar playing
I can spend a whole day getting lost in putting something together or learning parts.
Planet Caravan & She’s gone both from
Black Sabbath sit really high on my list , there’s just something about that dark classical guitar sound that takes me to a whole different realm …..

Thanks man. These things are out of control!
Flawless!!! I would add Guns 'N Roses You're Crazy G 'N R Lies version. Clean guitar that barks when needed.
One of my favorite to play is the intro to Wanted Dead or Alive, although admittedly I don’t have a 12 string so not totally authentic. Just a great little run of triads on the top three strings with an open D string drone note!
Watch Ben's face at 4:36 when Nick says the title of his first choice. Hilarious.
No offense Grim Reaper, Raven, Priest,Saxon, and Maiden are my all time faves!!!
I think right at the 15 minute mark everyone was like “RICKY WAS A YOUNG B-“ 😮
Closer to the Heart by RUSH is a favorite of mine. Open Your Heart by Europe is another.
Yes Ben! humans Being ⚡⚡
Uncle Ben I’m disappointed you didn’t include any Rush-Hemispheres anyone? But seriously love your clean tone on that gorgeous Les Paul
