    In past videos I've been asked about my card/cabinet scraper holder so I thought I would make a video and show what it is and make a new one. It really is a very basic but effective tool. It makes scraping a much easier task without the stress on your thumbs.
    I also took the opportunity to make a scraper from an old saw blade and show how I sharpen them. There maybe other techniques used by others to sharpen a scraper but this works for me consistently every time.
    I hope you enjoy the video and as always I'm happy to answer any questions.

    5 years later, and I made it! Out of black walnut and attendant hardware. My piece broken right down the middle, but after gluing up a support bracket, it seems to be holding fine - for now. I followed Mr Pask's directions on how to put a burr on, and for the first time, I got some shaving. Hurrah! Thanks Mr P, for your great idea.

    Your visual aid of how the edge looks was most helpful. Very clever.

    I liked your wood model that explains how the card scraper works. Thanks!

  • @chrisgriffith1573
    @chrisgriffith1573 4 года назад

    It may be more trouble than its worth... but I had the thought of making one using two pieces of wood, one with a predetermined curve in the backside, and another to fit the curve, then the screw can go thru all three, back plate, scraper and front plate, so as you adjust the screw, the curve gets adjusted until it meets fully with the two pieces of wood. The back plate would be a smaller piece to avoid the handles of the front plate. This way, the back plate puts even pressure across the entire scraper, and its depth accuracy would be determined by your pressure on the tool, less flex of the blade.

    I made my first scraper card a few days ago and I thought that I wouldn't ever need a scraper plane/holder. Long story short, after 20/30 minutes using the scraper with my hands my right hand collapsed and my thumb inflamed like a tennis ball. I'll make one of these, by the way, I love your design, simple and effective.

    Now my dull rusty saw has a future! I once made a scraper in an emergency from an L-shaped shelf bracket. Worked great for the little bit I needed it for, but mild steel doesn't last. I've seen someone cut a saw blade with metal shears, but I don't know if the shears survived. Thanks for these great videos. You have a great, easy style, which I like when I'm stressed.

      You really need both, but you can throw away your sandpaper. I measured my scraper shavings.. they're only around .001-.003 thick so it's not going to thickness or true up a surface. But a sharp scraper will almost eliminate the need to sand anything, ever, and it's 10x as fast. Best tool ever. Took some time to learn to sharpen and the problem there is different scrapers require slightly different sharpening steps/techniques. You'll have to experiment to get your 'hook'. Try it!

    Best explanation of card scrapper, love the idea of holder. But one question, what's the difference between the burs made by the file & the burning tool.

    • @lachlan1982
      @lachlan1982 5 лет назад +1

      I'd imagine the burr made by the file would have a weak base that, once pushed down he wood would probably snap off. The burr made by the screwdriver / hardened steel rod would have a thicker heel and finer toe, thus being less likely to break off! Hope that makes sense?!

  • @P47-i4u

    Well before date/best before date either or... If you drop some thin superglue in the hole in the pressure block for the machine screw, it would help it last and stop it pushing thru over time. Not that much of a bother, as it's easy enough to replace.
