Tac. Keep the cutting edge of the maul toward the edge of the log. Also it is best to work around a large piece rather than trying to center split. Take outside slices off first and then go for the center split. Peace.
Reminds me of Monty Python's Lumberjack song: Oh, I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay, I sleep all night and I work all day. I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I go to the lavatory.
I had seen a lot of videos..... A lot..... But this dude had an orgasm trying Gransfors Bruk . Funny and excellent video man! Perfect comparison for felling and splitting axe.
I'm not really a fan of using a splitting log, I think it takes a lot of power out of my swing. I'd rather use a low-cut stump. I'm not really tall or strong, but splitting wood should be done close to the ground, in my opinion. I may have to liberate a plastic wire spool for a good splitting base. The flats might protect my grass or driveway?
Yo tac!! What I picked up off my Dad was he used a felling axe a touch bigger than the old one you put together but used a heavy plastic sledge hammer along with it he would get a good strike then leave it in the wood and follow with the sledge to split the logs ? He uses the same idea with a small axe and lump hammer for camping and I find it works well. But man your New One rocks bro people shall call you Thor from now on lol!! Peace out
Hey tact could you talk about hand wrapping handles for blades. Like what is best to use? Stays tight, is waterproof and best way to do it. I have been wrapping handles lately but i have to improvise materials and techniques
Something else for my shopping list, a scout leader tip " pop the axe in the put the log on your shoulder. Slam the back of the axe down on the block and use its own weight to split it. Mostly works first time and much less work.
Nice badass axe there Tac, you should check out H&B Forge. If you like Grasfors and Bruks you'll like these. They focus more so on tomahawks, all handmade, 1095 and here in the USA. I know your a tomahawk guy, should try one out. Love mine, its still my favorite tomahawk. Still hair shaving sharp after a lot of use, just strap it a few times here in there, the edge is convex like my Blackjack tac ops 8.
Hey tactical, would you go with the Becker bk2 or the Ontario rat 5? For bushcraft and survival? Are there any others of this style and in this price range you recommend? I would like it to be under $100 but I want a good quality blade. Thanks Tyler
First off, I love Gransfors Bruks. Their axes and tools are first rate and I own several. However, I noticed you compared a splitting axe to a splitting maul so obviously there would be a noticeable difference.. Gransfors Bruks also makes a splitting axe and that would have been a more useful comparison.. Nonetheless, their maul is AWESOME!
When splitting wood try putting the logs in an old tire. It will save you from chasing after the wood and miss hits hit the tire saving your legs and maul.
I'm good between three tools for splitting . My dad's 8 lb maul from when he was a kid. A simple wedge. And a regular 4 lb felling axe. I split big 4 foot poplar logs with 12+ inch diameter in less than 10 swings. (For bonfires)
Damn it ***** I am sitting here is drinking my beer and you are getting me all wore out watching you swing that pos ax. Stop it! Use that bad as cack shaving mall! Lol.
Don't know how I missed this vid, must be workin' too much. Holy B'Jesus, that thing is HUGE! Yeah man, it's tough to beat GB, they're some baaaad Swedish boys.
This is an older video and a late comment but from one splitting to another... I hope you dont split by hand too often. The way you wind up and swing, while powerful, will give you really bad shoulder issues on your right side and likely back issues with age. Good video otherwise.
TrippeeToast that's what I thought. The grind on that axe and the thickness of it looks much more like a felling axe as opposed to an actual splitting maul which has a much more wedge-like shape to the entire blade.
GB make great axes and mauls but the new Fiskars Iso core maul (not the x27axe) is incredible. At my age (ancient) I can't justify buying one as the x27 plus my old maul meet my needs. Anything tougher and I resort to the chainsaw or hydraulic splitter but if your young and just starting out check out the Fiskars maul.
Your swearing is ON POINT. Makes it really fun to watch
"The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten". Henry Royce ....... Great. Tool Tac. !!!!!
Kirk Veesaert so true!
I got another two weeks til Im debt free. I will be buying this maul as a reward for paying everything off. Great video my friend!!!!
Congrats bro!
I love your style Tac. You got me into RMJ and now GBA
Tac. Keep the cutting edge of the maul toward the edge of the log. Also it is best to work around a large piece rather than trying to center split. Take outside slices off first and then go for the center split. Peace.
Love your French sir. The swearing makes for a super fun video! Thanks for the content!
Is it just me or do you also feel like he should be wearing a power ranger outfit :D lol

I wonder how good the Condor Splitting Axe would be for the budget minded. As this one is close to $300 where I live and the Condor is $90.
Foges584584 I should find out
***** Yes you should bro. Haha
Is that a CRACK that is visible on the handle from 1:36 to 1:39 ??? OMG

I was debating on getting a gb small splitting maul for winter backpacking excursions. You can consider it bought. Gransfor Bruks for life!
That is quite an amazing beast of a maul! Beautiful too. Now get the pile split!

Yo tac!! What I picked up off my Dad was he used a felling axe a touch bigger than the old one you put together but used a heavy plastic sledge hammer along with it he would get a good strike then leave it in the wood and follow with the sledge to split the logs ? Miss Tact got you that? You lucky dawg. If a girl ever buys me a Gransfors I would probably put a ring on her. LOL
Hey tact could you talk about hand wrapping handles for blades. Like what is best to use? Stays tight, is waterproof and best way to do it. I have been wrapping handles lately but i have to improvise materials and techniques
paul ballard ill see what I can do man
If you all pay attention he switches the axe with a different one in the end of the video 10:30 in the video look at the diff the camera pauses
WHAT MATERIAL DID YOU USE TO WRAP THE HANDLE NEAR THE HEAD??? I NEED TO KNOW!!!
Something else for my shopping list, a scout leader tip " pop the axe in the put the log on your shoulder. Slam the back of the axe down on the block and use its own weight to split it. Mostly works first time and much less work.

Is this the only channel that hasn't sold out?
hey TAC are you Canadian ?
How can this hand forged Swedish beast cost less than half of some kids-toy spyderco folding knife? Truly a bargain!
First off, I love Gransfors Bruks. Their axes and tools are first rate and I own several. However, I noticed you compared a splitting axe to a splitting maul so obviously there would be a noticeable difference.. Gransfors Bruks is the SHIT! Love that Maul. I have the small forest ax and love it.
***** they make great stuff
Nice gift Mrs Tac !
Hi Tac,
Stumbled upon your channel today... absolutely love your commentary :)
I really wanna see you test a John Neeman brother! The price tag on them though.
Fsims 97 me to!
you might try using a set block that is not so tall as you are losing a significant amount of torgue in your shortened swing.
I switched to a lower one
Bought one Got it today. Fuck me. Brilliant. Worth the money
When splitting wood try putting the logs in an old tire. It will save you from chasing after the wood and miss hits hit the tire saving your legs and maul.
Get off my axe, fly!! Haha!
Your vids rock Tact! Keep em rolling.
David Berry will do
That first piece was more than 12 inches! Thats a sick job by hand.
NewHampshire Bound your right
LMAO, Oh the smart ass I could be, But that is a Bad Ass Splitter. Awesome Job Brother.
I must have one! I need to stop watching your damn videos. But I can't! Thanks for sharing brother!
mb milton bradley ?
whats that first axe that you are swinging around in the intro?
3:45 why does it not split? The axe head was not made for splitting really. Good choice getting a splitting maul!
i have a 10lb standard maul, i split logs like that in one occasionally two whacks.
I'm good between three tools for splitting . My dad's 8 lb maul from when he was a kid. A simple wedge. And a regular 4 lb felling axe. I split big 4 foot poplar logs with 12+ inch diameter in less than 10 swings. (For bonfires)
Man, you got right excited when you saw how sharp that blade was! God vid.
Another good one tac. Helluva gift.
Whuddya mean " I'll even aim for the crack" ? You ALWAYS aim for the crack.

I fucking love you Tac, S/O from Ireland!
Dick C. Normous haha your awesome
Little? How tall are you my man? :D
Don't know how I missed this vid, must be workin' too much.
Holy B'Jesus, that thing is HUGE! Yeah man, it's tough to beat GB, they're some baaaad Swedish boys.
It's easier if you split it on the ground and not on a stump. You're losing half of you're down force swing. 👍
Was that a fart 🎉
good video
That is nice. I don't know if I have gotten a gift that good.
TKDLION I hope soon you do :)
I think the booklet said its Damascus steel
You can call yourself Tactical#Lumberjack. Pretty awesome Maul !!!
jamespaul02 :)
Aww Yeahhh! Very nice!
***** thanks Mark!
Tac it happened to fast. I had to replay it on a slower speed. I need to satisfy my need for slow mo.
it took you four hits to get the old axe _in_ to the wood by about two inches.
This is an older video and a late comment but from one splitting to another... I hope you dont split by hand too often. The way you wind up and swing, while powerful, will give you really bad shoulder issues on your right side and likely back issues with age. Good video otherwise.
tac do a video showing how you put a tap wrap on an axe
Justin Dawson I did

Frickin tactical Chris Farley...
Hardcore splitting right there. Awesome axe to
It's not an axe it's a maul numb nuts😂
+Randal Flagg type of axe, man.
1:30 MB = Mattias Blixt-Pettersson
that Axe is sharper than some of my knives 😢
You need a wedge. That’s how to properly do that size of wood.
that first axe looks more like a forest axe, maybe a felling axe
TrippeeToast that's what I thought. The grind on that axe and the thickness of it looks much more like a felling axe as opposed to an actual splitting maul which has a much more wedge-like shape to the entire blade.
You sound like the oldest son on that bush people show
Go the GB you can't beat it, good video

GB make great axes and mauls but the new Fiskars Iso core maul (not the x27axe) is incredible. At my age (ancient) I can't justify buying one as the x27 plus my old maul meet my needs. Anything tougher and I resort to the chainsaw or hydraulic splitter but if your young and just starting out check out the Fiskars maul.
