Tony MacAlpine spent some time with Premier Guitar during his Nashville stop on the 2014 Maximum Security tour. The tour’s namesake album was released over 25 years ago, and the playing is as impressive now as it was then. MacAlpine’s current setup stays true to his past tones while incorporating a few new twists.
Tony uses two custom Ibanez 7-string RG Prestige guitars. Both guitars feature active EMG pickup with a push/pull control for clean and dirty tones.
MacAlpine uses Ernie Ball .009-.052 strings on all of his guitars.

I saw Tony twice this year at The Iridium in NY and you know what, if you give him a 100 dollars guitar he will play it with the same intensity and clearity. He is a fucking genius.
What a humble and self-effacing guy.
A dude this humble, cool, and talented should be playing in a larger place.
Awesome! I'm so glad they made this. I love Tony's playing. He's one of my heroes.
First off, massive fan of Tmac and all of his works including PSMS, Planet X and alike. First time I watched this I was shocked that he didn't really know/care about the specifics of his guitar. Then it struck me that I'd heard him mention somewhere he doesn't see himself as a guitarist rather a musician using the guitar as a tool to express himself. He's also an absolute boss on piano so I'm not surprised he doesn't know what wood his guitar is constructed of and why should he care? It produces the sound he wants! Very honest and simplistic rig rundown. Now I love it!
***** Tony is the real deal. He is a musician's musician who just happens to play guitar.
the wood that he said he didn't know what it was was the 2 skunk stripes running down the length of the neck
The extra wood on the neck is filler and is only for strengthening it because it's no a standard 6 string
Might explain why there is no T Mac sig guitar - he may have chosen not to have one - must be plenty of product guys that want his endorsement/signature on their gear ... Just asking the question??
An absolute legendary guitarist who knows how to play technically and tastefully.
Tony Mac's is one of the ultimate tone masters!
He's a virtuoso in guitar and piano.
Yes...T-Mac is a concert pianist too.
I like the simplicity of his rig. Amazing!
Tony isn't being dense here like someone mentioned, he's just very humble and low key. I've met him a few times already, watched him perform several times solo, and with Bunny Brunnel. He's actually very humble. almost shy, but way cool and very down to earth. He's a joker too, as he did the bunny ears thing over my head when I took a pic with him once lol =-)
I'm so glad he's well now. He sounded fantastic in France.
Is his cancer in remission?
rbagel55 Yes. He's been playing in the States recently. There's a video of him and Henry Li playing together. He's been working on a new album.
I never heard Tony play until l saw a video with Tony,Portnoy,Sheehan, Shernian on RUclips...this combo of musicians is incredible...Tony is now one of my top 5 players...
He goes back to the earliest years of guitar shredders, when the very first guitar-only metal records were being released.
"well, i don't know, i didn't make it" i love this guy, just plug and play
Our thoughts & prayers are with you & your wife Tony.
I hope you both are getting better & healthy!
HOT DIGGY! This rig rundown came out of nowhere. Love T-MAC!!
The first time I ever heard pinch harmonics was on a Tony Macalpine track, and I thought it was the neatest sound I ever heard. Even though I can't shred even a little...this man has been a huge inspiration for me over the years.
+ClamsAnonymous
First time I heard them was on 'Cold Ethyl', Alice Cooper, but them I'm old as hell...
I feel the reason that Tony McAlpine is an underrated guitarist for all these years is that he is colorful.
Ha ha ha. I see what you did there,
In the 80's he did an in store at a shop I worked in. While they were setting up a simple ADA MP1 rig for him, he sat at a piano. He's a much better Pianist, he studied classical Piano from a very young age.
Fred Garvin, I agree that he's a far better on keys than he is on guitar. I prefer his keyboard playing.
And there's Tony's rig rundown and now let's take a look at my rundown rig.
from springfield mass. he use to walk down the street playing his guitar back in the early 80s. and played in local bands with lenny menard on bass
I had no idea he was in western mass😲
get well soon tony macalpine!
Tony Rules!!!! Amazing LIVE!!!!
He is a total boss. So much respect.
Been a MacAlpine fan for a long time. Thanks for the upload
That Maximum Security album still sounds incredible to this day. Only thing that could have made it better would have been to have Billy Sheehan return on bass (he was busy with David Lee Roth at the time). Then again, my head would have exploded from awesome overload! Rock on, Tony!
Tony could't give less shit what components guitar is made of, it works so he plays it, bedroom players like me seem to care much more about gear wood and other crap 'cause we can't play like tony so we have to concentrate on bullshit like tone wood and boutique pedals.
I agree with you.
Years ago I worried about the material aspect of what made guitars, amps, and pedals.
And as I've gotten progressively better on guitar over the years, I've learned I can sound better with a Squier, and my broken in Katana mini now vs myself from 2009, with my now beloved 2009 Fender Stratocaster and old Marshall.
Gear is good, but I think it's also relative to how you play.
Tony Sounds better with his humble setup vs other players with their 2,000$ pedalboards worth of gear.
Saw you in Austin a few weeks ago. Your tone was freakin' awesome.
One of the best electric guitarist on earth
one of the greatest ever.
pure legend
Very simple setup with massive sounds, tones & melodies..
Super Guita Hero..🏆🏆🏆👍
Bad interview,, I love Tony!!
Love this guy’s music. Such a great talent
Great guy and awesome player!!Killer combo!!!!
I don’t know anything of guitars but I love these videos
"and watch the guys who know how to play the stuff.".
Guy's pretty humble.
amazing guitar player and nice person.
When he played the octave sustain note I kind of melted a little bit. I would have let Tony elaborate on that a bit.
Same thing. I LOOOOVE Hendrix though I like when people use octave fuzz in a different way.
This guy is from another planet..
Rosewood neck?! Looks like maple to me! I do see a Rosewood fingerboard though
mrpres17 i'm sure he meant the fretboard.
A virtuoso musician of keyboard and strings come on IBANEZ long overdue for a signature guitar where a raft of lesser technically skilled musicians already have them.
He had a signature model with Carvin a few years ago.
so underrated..
Um gênio. Simples, virtuoso e com excelente bom gosto.
Nice Rig Tony! Rock On!
They should have had John Bohlinger do this interview. Would have been way better. I was excited to see a TMac rig rundown what a waste.
Nice and simple rig! I like his t-shirt too! ;)
A true master wow
Hey PG....why didn't you guys also rundown Nili Brosh's rig?
Gone are the days of the DiMarzio Super Distortions MXR Distortion+ Peavey Mace amp and Publison reverb thus is why T-Mac's modern sound bores me to death
Shortest Rig Rundown ever. Kinda boring for gearheads like me who like to see loads of different guitars and complicated setups, but kinda refreshing to know that someone doesn't need to know every crack of the guitar in order to play brilliant on it.
Tony is the man
He s a beast🤟!
Nice! I have the multi-wave distortion!
Legend
World class act.. my guitar hero..❤
i miss rebecca
we want sydney!!!!
*****
Ace Ventura. Classic.
❣
I still want some more info on his Ibanez 8 string with a trem (Not the fixed Edge III, but a real trem)
such a utilitarian, no gear fetish here.. gotta love Tony..
Just seems like standard T-Mac to me. He's always been a bit awkward (go back and watch the Star Licks vid from 1988, or his instructional), so it's just him being himself here.
That amp is ballznasty badass.
I helped someone special do a report on shredding and I there was a pic of tony in it
Hehe Tony is such a legend 🌞
love love love TM
legend!
The stripe on the back of the neck we're the stress rod is it's called a skunk stripe
ce mec est une légende; respect eternel
Love tony
Might wanna turn up the guitar volume so we can hear what's going on.
fuerza con tu enfermedad genio!from Argentina
I love it. "I go to namm to see people who actually know how to use the stuff". I'm guessing Tony isn't on RUclips much lol. If you know how to play, the less gear you need generally speaking.
This guy didn't even ask what kind of picks Tony was using. Not to mention asking about any of sounds he was using and how he get's them!
That shirt that Tony has on! HAHAHA I need that shirt.
Host overly appreciative of being asked how he's doing. It was a rhetorical question, dude. It's like hi. Do you seriously think the illustrious Tony MacAlpine cares how you're doing? As if, dawg.
I waiting for Ibanez Tony Macalpine signature for can buy one this 7 string guitar
Great video! Somebody can tell me the model of the white Ibanez?? It looks killer:)
Tony seems like a really great guy! Have heard the name before, but never had a face to go with it. Didn't like the vibe of the interviewer though.. Kinda negative
He's a well known douche
i like this guitars specially with push pull system i wanna put this on my axe
I think it's great that Tony doesn't know the wood type in his guitar neck.
Does it really matter?
Not rocking the Carvins anymore?!
Is that big skull on his strap anything functional, or is it purely flair?
I think you can put picks in them
Patrick Swain
Oh?? That'd be cool! I use the lil' dispensers that Dunlop makes. Keep 1 stuck on the back of the amp or head, and -if they're not too curvy etc.- maybe 1 on the guitar's body as well.
It opens up beer bottles lop
That seems to be Aquiles' drum kit...
3:57 Giggity giggity alright!!!!
I understand why Steve Vai chose to take him on a tour; he’s such a cool guy 👌🏻
How much more awkward could this be?
I know. Seemed like Tony wanted to be anywhere but there.
What can i say? Tony is Messi & Maradona!
How much time do you tweak 5:23
I belive this gear was stolen from him b on the lookout for those guitars
edge of insanity one best...sharpnel records..
tony is a true genius talent, the interviewer kinda flubs this opportunity
I didn't know he used EMGS, interesting.
do a rig rundown on black veil brides
For the sake of humanity, I hope you are joking...
what a bad interviewer.
omg....neckthrough......much want, very desire.
No delay?
It's built in to the amp
02:13 ouch
I'm very disappointed that he downgraded to EMG.
They sound incredible
2:13 OUCH!!!
Whats the intro song?
Hc tears of sahara from maximum security album
Wow, big fan of Tony's but never have I seen a less entertaining more uniformed rig rundown, really ever. Tony seems to know little to none of what he is really playing either that or he just doesn't want to give anything away. Apparently he isn't familiar with these segments.
Is he playing dumb? the guy plays with Vai, i mean...not only dat plays keyboard at the same time..gotta b foolin arnd n shit
If you listen to what's being said in the interview, you might notice that Tony at some point mentions that back in the 80ies when he/they recorded Maximum Security, they didn't have access to the plethora of gadgets that exists today. Tony can PLAY - to me it's evident that his technique has perfected itself beyond the need for gadgets.
Joepius Paffus Yes so did many other players from that time..Tmac is a monstrous player..He is one of the most technically evolved musicians hence its quite surprising that he put up that show..I was expecting he'd b throwing knowledge like Guthrie or like PG or sumtin..To play with Vai u gotta b of Godly level which he is, hence the interview came of a surprise
Tony knows his stuff - completely. However, he never really has focused on effects/gadgets, and I think I remember him saying so in an interview years ago. In fact, during one of the interviews/conversations in Vai's Astoria DVD, he cracked on Vai for using so many effects.
Joepius Paffus
But this isn't a segment about technique, it is a segment about gear & really knowledge of it. Tony is no doubt an amazing player, everyone knows that, or should. But these segments are about learning the gear the artists play & why they play it.
👍👍👍👍
looks like tony stark
2:13... ouch... guitars hitting
Ha, I've listened to this guy a long time and never realized he's basically just a guitar nerd lol
He just wanna play the damn guitar n not worry about everything else. Musicians of now dwell too much into gears n equipments. If he needs to achieve a certain kind of tone he just needs to ask his tech
