  • This my review and walkaround of the Tamron 18-270 Di ii VC Lens. I've owned this lens for over 3 years now and I'm well qualified to talk about it.
    I've found it a great lens and I really hope you'll enjoy the review.
    The majority of photos on photography.nic... were shot on this lens so take a look. Every animal photo (zoo shots) were taken on this lens.
    Some people say this lens is a little soft at the zoomed end of the range, but personally I think that's just a lack of their ability.
    This was shot at 270mm on a Nikon D40 which is hardly cutting edge technology. I would say that is plenty sharp.

    Please feel free to comment.

    Matthew McWhinney Yes, it works with the Nikon D200. It's an AF-S lens so works with all Nikon bodies 2006 onwards. The Nikon D200 will also run the older style AF lenses also as it has an internal focus motor.
    This lens also works with the cheaper bodies, D3100, D3200, D5100 etc etc etc.

    I just got this lens for my Nikon D5500, and I love it. I'm not a professional photographer, but I needed something that would help me get good reference photos for my drawings. Yesterday I took it to a horse driving competition, and got some great shots. I was happy to get something this nice that I could afford!

    Hi there, I've actually used the Nikon 70-300 (non-vr) and in terms of optics it's very similar to the Tamron. It stops down to f6.3 at a shorter zoom so in that instance it's worse however it's focus speed is slightly quicker than the Tamron. Swings and roundabouts. The Tamron is much more versatile though. On a D5100 70mm (105 cropped) at the wide end is still very tight so unless you're only shooting subjects at range the Tamron will be more useful without swapping lenses. Hope this helps :)

    nice review dude... i run with D5100 too...
    although I do not have this lens ( but i borrowed this lens a couple of week), i think this lens its great for the price, slow AF on low light, lens creep, its fine to me ^^
    i think some people are expect too much for this cheap lens, because they expect the low price can get the same results with a gold ring .. damnt ... this is not apples to apples, but apples with something else..

    I bought the Tamron 18-270 VC PZD to replace my Tamron 18-250 (Non IS/VC version). I know this review is the non-PZD version but the PZD version is the currently available lens so people thinking about purchasing one will be looking at this review.
    The 18-250 is so much better that I've probably shot less than 100 images with the 18-270 (I've shot about 4,000 images with the 18-250).
    The 18-250 is so much sharper with better contrast. The worst thing, though, is the bokeh... especially on specular highlights. They look like little donuts - a bit like a mirror lens - and they are rough! Nothing creamy about this bokeh!
    I've sent the lens back to Tamron for checking and they say it's within spec so I don't have a dud copy.
    I know it's a superzoom, with all its compromises but this one (the 18-270) is too much of a compromise!

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад

      Good comment David, as you say with a lens of such range there are compromises. I reckon that if you're enough of an connoisseur to spot these kinds of things then you should consider a lens with less of a zoom range as generally less versatile lenses offer greater sharpness. Something like a Nikon 70-200 etc. Also I believe the elements in the later version (the PZD one you have) were of a different design (less elements to reduce weight and size). I've always found mine to be pretty sharp. Hope this helps, Nick

      Nick... thanks for your thoughts. I have a variety of other lenses including the 70-200 f4 (I'm a Canon man), the 70-300, the 17-40mm and the 20-105mm - all L series so good glass - that I use for serious shooting. It's just all a bit much to lug around when you're supposed to be on holidays. I've now settled on the 15-85mm and the 55-250mm STM (which is a cheap plastic-mount lens but amazing IQ) as my travel kit.

    i saw that u have very good ideas about tamron lenses, i have tamron 18-270 mm di II VC PZD
    My question is that when i turn on VC , the lens produce sounds , is this normal ?
    I have nikon d7000

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад +2

      Hi there, yes this is absolutely normal there is a magnetic stabilisation system, to conserve battery this shuts off when not in use. Therefore when you turn the camera on (or just after you half press the shutter button) it will activate the VC and make a buzzing noise.
      To get best results, half press, pause as the VC fires up then take your photo, this will give the lens a little time stabilise itself.
      Top Tip: When using the camera on a tripod or when doing long exposures turn the VC off. When doing long exposures it actually adds blur to the photo as it's constantly trying to stabilise the shot which is already stable.

    Where does the outer ring that is used for manual focus (that goes from inifiinty to 0.49m) need to stay when the lens is in AF? Thanks!

    Hi,
    could u please do me a favor? Could you do a focus test and upload it here? Just put the lens cap on and push the trigger to let it focus at 18 mm and please do the same at 270mm. I am just wondering how slow/fast and loud it is. Thanks

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад

      Hey there, I have done such a test from minimum focus to max in the video I believe. Usually catches focus first time (body dependant) so that's how long it takes. Hope that helps.

    Hi. I need a quick answer urgent. Thx.
    So a Tamron 18-270 I am about tu buy online. Good price, used. But comes with Nikon mount, and should fit on my Canon eos , with an adaptor ring.
    I know that no electronics this way.
    Perfect for me if... if...
    So, here comes the question:
    Without electronics a Tamron would stay open aperture or would stay with closed aperture. (Full open... perfect for me.) Thanx.

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  8 лет назад

      +Clemente Meulio Yes, it's an AF-S lens which means it has the in-built focus motor which your Nikon D5000 requires to autofocus. Hope that helps :)

    I just rec'd this lens thinking it works w my Nikon d3200 but it doesn't fit! Did I buy wrong lens or is there an adapter?

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  9 лет назад

      starski7 Hi there, not heard of anything like this before. They do this lens to fit Sony and Canon also though. I assume you've brought the Nikon AF-S version? If you have I see no reason it would'nt fit your D3200. I used to use this lens on a Nikon D5100 and it worked perfectly. You should just line the dots up and rotate it into position.

    Hi Nick I need a al l rounder lens for a compact system. I have professional kit but need small kit I can carry out with me for the kids every day.... can I call you to discuss this as you seem to have used it a lot. thanks

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад

      Hey there, tbh I wouldn't take a call. But I can well recommend this lens as a one lens fits all solution. Ideal for pretty much everything and it's as 'small' as it's going to get for a DSLR lens. If you want a really compact system you're better off looking at a Nikon 1 etc. But pricey!

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  7 лет назад

      The Nikon D5300 takes AF-S lenses (i.e. with the autofocus in the lens rather than driven from the camera body). So yes. It will work as this is an AF-S lens :)

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад

      Hey there, in short. Yes it does. It's an AF-S lens meaning it has an inbuilt focus motor as such it will work with a D5300. I briefly owned a D5100 a year or so ago and it worked great with that. It's an ideal lens to match with that camera.

      Nick Hurst Hi! there. I'm planning to purchase my first DSLR in another 6 months (during holiday season) and I have Zeroed on Nikon D3300 and this lens. I prefer one lens as I'll use it for travel . Do you think that both are a good combination. The new 16-300 seems to be beyond my budget and I don't want to invest a lot of money initially. I'll be shooting Natural landscapes, some macro and birds/wild animals. I want to know your opinion on this.
      Thanks

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  10 лет назад

      Adima Sund Hi there, yes I think that’ll be an ideal combination. I used to run this lens on the Nikon D5100 which is a similar camera to the D3300 and it’s a nice balanced combination. Not too heavy. The lens is great for landscapes (although does suffer from mild barrel distortion at the wide end - nothing that photoshop can’t easily sort). For wildlife it’ll deliver great results with it’s really great vibration reduction system. It won’t do true macro (i.e. 1:1 ratio) but at around 200mm you can focus at about 1 meter so you can get pretty close. Close enough for most. Hope this helps.

    will this work on a nikon D5200?

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  9 лет назад +1

      Absolutely, it is an AF-S lens (i.e. where the focus motor is inside the camera) and will therefore work with all modern Nikon DSLR's including the D5200.

    This lens is soft as balls

    • @NickHurst1987
      @NickHurst1987  9 лет назад +2

      Like all zoom lenses it takes time and understanding to find it's sharp points. This lens can be very sharp. It's pretty sharp from around 35mm up to the max zoom, soft at the wide end. But it's the aperture and VC that make the real difference. Turn the VC off to make it sharper (but make sure you have a steady hand). When the VC motor turns on it has a habit of softening images. Also, have your aperture between f5 and f8 for sharpest results. Hope this helps.

    • @kalidesu
      @kalidesu 9 лет назад

      Yeah I'll try it with VC off and see if that improves.
