Ok, so it appears my Mt. Fuji expedition was very different. I went there on June (off season). I was staying at a hostel, waiting for good weather. I had booked 1 week, and on the 4th morning, Clear Skies! My hostel manager actually drove me up to one of the stations, and I started climbing alone. Met a random Japanese man halfway through, and we teamed up. NO other people were seen. We did the climb, circled the crater, and walked back. Pretty amazing!!! Be aware that there are no public buses off season, or you can be lucky to stumble on a random person, who will be like "I will drop u off at your guesthouse!"
You forgot to record the horrible way down. 5 hours of slippery stones under the sun with no sleep, no energy in your body and two toilets for everybody. For me it was the hardest experience ever :(
Best is taking bus tour which come and pick you up at your hotel around 4am and take you to 5th of Fuji where video started. it still gives you nice sunrise. After you enjoy hot sweet sake inside, BUS WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO YOUR HOTEL BY 7AM! :D
at the 5:00 mark, my reaction was "oh, they actually have people making sure that the tourists don't go to sleep in sub-zero temperatures and die on their benches". His reaction was "Oh, a crudely made dark lord of the sith wants to ruin my friends snooze. What an asshat. Time to eat my chocolate I suppose" I've seen that part three times now, laughed just as hard every time xD
Googled Mt Fuji and learned that it was the tallest mountain in Japan. So I went "Huh! I wonder if I could climb the tallest mountain in my country". That was before I realised that the tallest mountain in my country is the freaking Mt. Everest.
Wondered the same for a split-second before realizing the tallest point in my country is a hill. Well, what can you expect residing in a country that lies on average below sea level.
Fabian Flat surfaces may be boring but they are so much more convenient for transportation. Where I'm from, Nepal, there were some districts that were inaccessible up until 5 years ago because constructing a road there was next to impossible back then because of the mountains. But, mountains do make for beautiful scenery. :D
I had to come and re-watch some of your old videos while reading your book and I am really enjoying them (both the old videos and the book)! You've accomplished so much throughout the years, and grown a lot as a person and content creator. The book was a great idea. Reading about your ups and downs, making difficult decisions, setting goals and pushing through even when it's not always easy is super motivating. All of it wrapped in a great sense of humour. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can achieve in the next 10 years and in the meanwhile I'll get back to working on my personal goals. Thank you for this motivation, it was much needed!
I was a "bullet climber", and ill prepared. Only a light jacket and thin hardshell pants. I still made it to the top in about 4 hours or so. But once there, slept against some locked door. And when I woke up, I was freezing my rear off. I actually descended about 500 ft to a sheltered area , just to warm up, and then had to go back up for the frozen sunrise. Lesson learned. Bring warm clothes. Very warm clothes. And a pillow.
yea that's the only part about it putting me off it. Had dreamed about doing it if I could ever visit. Just not up for a vertical Disneyland. I'd have to leave the wife n kids in the room too to do it because I know that wouldn't go well. Too bad though I'd love to have done it.

My dad and I did this when I was a kid. Hardest thing I have ever done behind quitting smoking but also the most rewarding. It doesn't look hard but, OH MY GOD! My Dad had to keep pushing me along. We bought the walking sticks and had them stamped at every station. He still has his but mine got blown away in Hurricane Wilma when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale. I would HIGHLY recommend doing this for anyone visiting Japan. It is the greatest feeling when standing at the top looking down on creation. Thanks for posting this. You didn't miss much not having a reservation at one of the station inns Chris. You are squeezed together head-to-toe with dozens of people in a blistering hot space to sleep. I maybe got a 2 hour nap in, but my buddy stayed awake the entire time. We ended up leaving early and hiked the remaining mountain due to the sheer discomfort. The congestion of people delayed at various switchbacks was easily the most annoying part of the climb. The sunrise was magnificent and I absolutely do not regret climbing Mt. Omg....it's been 4 years?! EDIT: it’s been 3 years from this comment and made me realize how long I’ve actually been watching Chris. My taste in RUclips videos has changed drastically over the years, but one thing has always been the same. My love for this channel and the evolution in the cinematography and style of video Chris creates. Also thank you Trash Taste for reviving my memory on this video and seeing a really old comment of mine on this video! Hope y’all are doing well :)
I went up Mt Fuji yesterday over the Gotemba trail and it was really surprised cause it was very different than what I thought it would be like: - it's easily doable in a day trip: 8h up and down including 1h at the top - there was no one around (this might be due to a different trail and off season though) - the climb is long but not technically difficult, there's no climbing sections or anything - going down the gravel is fast and a lot of fun
Oh wow this was 7 years ago, i would love to see Chris climb mount Fuji again but with Ryotaro and Natsuki too join him, probably never going to see this, just a thought, i think it would be great. Totally unintended but i noticed that i commented on the same day that this was posted 7 years ago, Nice
The three generations on Orlando are planning to make this climb summer of 2022, 65 years after the oldest climbed it the first time, I hope our planning makes this less "Hell" for us. We plan to document it a lot.
Chris, thank you so very much for taking us on this journey with you. I do not know if I will every climb Mt. Fuji (I would like to someday) but to be able to to see the sunrise from its summit (and the-hopefully-dormant volcanic crater) of Mt. Fuji was wonderful. Thank you for the video. And for all you had to go through thank you. :D
I gotta say man you are by far the funniest youtuber I subscribe to, "George, or rather, Judas" was hilarious like all your one liners. Also you've convinced me to make Japan my next destination come December!
As cramped and frustrating it must have been, it's gotta be dually awesome that you managed to climb Mt.Fuji PLUS you got to slum it like a proper refugee with your Japanese brethren!
That's almost insane!! Here in Italy, in vending machines, you pay from 50c (for the local brand) to 1€ (the most expensive brand like Ferrarelle)for a 1/2 liter bottle. In convenience stores you can buy a 6 pack of 1/2 liter bottless for less than 1,90 € Why in the world, you have to pay so much for a plain bottle of water?
Francesco Banelli Because that's what they charge. If people had any sense they'd take a canteen and refill it, but somehow that labels you as a weirdo.
I did it during the day, alone. I thought to myself I'll just walk around or squeeze myself somewhere until sunrise, no problem. The walking up was pretty tough, but no illness or whatsoever. I had no idea how to book a dorm, that is what you really need to do in that situation. So at midnight it started raining like hell, and nowhere to hide. I was completely wet and freezing and would probably die if I stayed for 5-6 more hours. So I just went down in a middle of a night. Luckily I wasn't alone who made this mistake. That is when you think, never again, but this unaccomplished mission that I missed sunrise is killing me, so this summer I got other parts of Japan to explore, but next summer I'll hopefully go with my friends for sunrise, no matter what. That is an adventure you will never forget.
It happened so that I first watched your more recent videos, and only now this one. And due to this time travel I came up with an observation - Japan takes it's tall on you, Chris! You've become politer and less sarcastic. And oh! Grew up some hair.))) But it all really becomes you. Keep it up! :D PS Thank you so much for the video about Anki and Memrise apps, it might be a much needed breakthrough for me. Well, not Anki, as I do not share their point of view that all the iPhone holders have superfluous 25$... But Memrise is totally great! Made my day and some part of the night :)) (though not sure whether I should put a sad smile...)

anyone here after listening to the latest podcast? (hello from the US, chris!)
I went up Mt Fuji yesterday over the Gotemba trail and it was really surprised cause it was very different than what I thought it would be like:
- it's easily doable in a day trip: 8h up and down including 1h at the top
- there was no one around (this might be due to a different trail and off season though)
- the climb is long but not technically difficult, there's no climbing sections or anything
- going down the gravel is fast and a lot of fun
Oh wow this was 7 years ago, i would love to see Chris climb mount Fuji again but with Ryotaro and Natsuki too join him, probably never going to see this, just a thought, i think it would be great.
Totally unintended but i noticed that i commented on the same day that this was posted 7 years ago, Nice
Your wish was granted.
BEST VIDEO EXPERIENCE IS BACK!! Thank You! 🤩🤩✌
It is back!!! Yay, take this Sharla :D
Came after Chris's last Fuji climb, he has come such a long way!
Tips not clear. Climbed myself a wrong mountain
The three generations on Orlando are planning to make this climb summer of 2022, 65 years after the oldest climbed it the first time, I hope our planning makes this less "Hell" for us. We plan to document it a lot.
So glad this is back. I hope Chris does something similar to this again, lol.
Just like climbing Krakatoa innit?
I gotta say man you are by far the funniest youtuber I subscribe to, "George, or rather, Judas" was hilarious like all your one liners. Also you've convinced me to make Japan my next destination come December!
Chris literally just mentioned this video on yesterday's podcast, but it's suddenly in my recommendation. What the hell
As cramped and frustrating it must have been, it's gotta be dually awesome that you managed to climb Mt.Fuji PLUS you got to slum it like a proper refugee with your Japanese brethren!
It's kind of hilarious that in many places in america that a bottle of water is 2-3$.
Yeah, that's pretty much the rate in Australia too. More for a bigger one like that.
That's almost insane!! Here in Italy, in vending machines, you pay from 50c (for the local brand) to 1€ (the most expensive brand like Ferrarelle)for a 1/2 liter bottle.
In convenience stores you can buy a 6 pack of 1/2 liter bottless for less than 1,90 €
Why in the world, you have to pay so much for a plain bottle of water?
I'm back!
It happened so that I first watched your more recent videos, and only now this one. And due to this time travel I came up with an observation - Japan takes it's tall on you, Chris! You've become politer and less sarcastic. And oh! Grew up some hair.))) But it all really becomes you. Keep it up! :D
PS Thank you so much for the video about Anki and Memrise apps, it might be a much needed breakthrough for me. Well, not Anki, as I do not share their point of view that all the iPhone holders have superfluous 25$... But Memrise is totally great! Made my day and some part of the night :)) (though not sure whether I should put a sad smile...)
how is he in shorts >.>
