As a Middlesbrough man I've seen all this before. Southgate came into the job with good credit as he was a good well loved player for us. He seemed smart, well spoken and informed. He had this idea for a young, dynamic squad focused on quick attacking play and then done nothing but sit back with players who didn't know how to sit back... That's all he knows, he's a defender and naturally reserved but tries to be something else. He's not evolved as a manager in one aspect and I don't think he can. Ultimately we got relegated and he destroyed us, we went from Premier league regulares, cup finalists including Europe to a bog standard championship team. Him being a yes man, a company man moved onwards and upwards. Notice he always makes sure his starters match the ones who are front and centre in all the posters for sponsorship etc....
He only knows one way of doing things and we've basically lucked our way into the places we got in the last few competitions. We will get to the final 8 no doubt then get knocked out in a limp, tired display with zero effort or heart. His way of playing ensures that at a minimum and offers zero risk of injury and creates media hype which sponsors love. More money in that than winning. The system loves him....

This is the sort of thing that means our players don't perform. We can say "oh but they're professionals they're meant to handle pressure" all we want, but the fact is England players haven't been able to cope with ridiculous expectations and pressure "we" put on them and it's been the same story for decades. Southgate is no Pep Guardiola, we know that. A big part of why he's done well is because when he came in from the U21's, expectation was rock bottom after years of disappointment culminating in that appalling Iceland defeat. There was very little pressure on him and the team to perform, and guess what? they did. They played with a freedom and confidence that I'd never seen in my lifetime (I'm 33), before eventually succumbing to pressure in those big moments (Croatia + Italy). Did he tell his players to sit back and defend those leads? no. Did he do that last night against Denmark? no. The players were overcome by the energy and confidence of some very gritty, organised underdogs. Could his tactics and decisions be better at times? I'm sure they could! but let's be real, pressure is clearly a factor. By failing to accept that we (and that includes these pundits) we create a positive feedback loop of negativity that is strangling the players.
The only chance we've got of winning this tournament is if we come together and get behind our manager and our team. Otherwise we've got no chance.

It’s not the result that bothers me, it the performance. I do not expect to win every game, but I do expect fight and determination. What you’ve said makes zero sense about Southgate, is it the media’s fault we’re playing 3 RBs? No. Is it the media’s fault he’s playing some our best talent out of position? No. He’s a fraudster. League one manager at best. Look at villa with Gerrard fighting relegation, they get a manager that knows what his doing and are now in the champions league with practically the same team. You can’t blame expectations on England playing this way. Stick to walking in straight lines 😂

Social media definitely doesn't help because they're only seeing negativity and anger. Then you look at our performances in recent tournaments over the past 2 decades.. We have played 9 nations you would call “Top Nations” and we’ve only won 1!
    9 Games, 1 Win…
How can we seriously be considered favourites going into the tournament when we LOSE every single time we play a top nation? To win this we’ve gotta beat 3 top nations at the very least!

The players aren't buying into what they are being asked to do, they all look lost as to what they are supposed to be doing, it's a tournament to far for Southgate and we paying the price.

PICK FIT TEAM on FRIDAY at 13.30pm. Unfit front 4 deprived Trent of passing options as forwards sank deeper. He can't pass to corner flags can he?. He needs Salah & Darwin & Jota like runs to stretch rivals back 3.
Trent was let down by Kane's unfitness/hurt back. Trent created most chances & long passes ( in only 54 mins, more than Rice did in 90+ minutes )
Are we gonna waste another world class talent like Hoddle or make it work like Italy did with Pirlo.
It's time to go 3-4-3 with Kyle-Dunk-Guehi at the back &
Trent on the right & Shaw on the left with Palmer-Watkins-Gordon up front.
Gareth should pick the team on Friday at 13.30pm (at Munich time) so that boys can get ready for battle by visualising victory over next 4 sunsets before 4 nice sleeps.
Then, after about 9 good nights of sleep, England will have Jude-Saka-Kane & Foden & Stones back to full fitness. With Palmer & Watkins & Gordon ready to come off the bench if energy levels drop again in the KO stages.
Don Capello & Didi Hamman are spot on. Watch at 21 mins when Pickford passed the ball to Denmark, leading to 3 mins of pressure in our half. Schmiecal wuda wasted time & calmed his defence down & given them a breather in very humid heavy air.
JP did the same in last 3 tournaments & after taking the lead, he becomes too aggressive & he starts giving the ball away.
Watch Don Capello's chat on Sky TV after defeat to France in Qatar. Our Italian ex-boss was very frustration at Pickford.
5 - GS made fast good subs but needed to take tired unfit Stones off & go 3-4-3 with Trent out wide & Kyle in a back 3 with Guehi & Dunk (to handle the big Danes).
6 - Harry's bad pass to give goal away was due to a tired brain & body. GS may have to limit him to 30-60 mins a game as he is giving GS the same problem that unfit Jimmy Greaves gave Sir Alf in 1966.
Greaves was Englands most clinical finisher & has a better goal per game ratio than Kane, Owen, Shearer & Lineker. Subs were not allowed in 1966 so Sir Alf had to drop Greaves. GS does not need to do that.
7 - Gordon & Palmer have been on 🔥, just like Sir Geoff Hurst was in 1966. As per top pundits Souness & Carra & Shearer.
8 - Messi & Argentina started slowly & lost to low ranked Saudi. Then the old GOAT Messi & thier aging winger & CB all got fit after 3 x OK games.
9 - Carra is spot on, ManC #10 is KDB not nice Foden. Plan B of dropping Jude to 8 may not be as good as Plan A with fully fit Jude Palmer Gordon Watkins giving Trent passing options. Foden & Kane & Saka may have to become impact super subs coming on for the last 30 mins until they get fully fit & catch 🔥 (when they can start)
    10 - Don't bash Gareth & the boys.
In Qatar the top pundits (possibly Carra & Souness & Pougatch & Sir Kenny D) said Messi will be unstoppable when he gets fully fit & catches fire 🔥. Leo got fit & Did what he Does Best.
Get Harry Foden Saka Jude fit by taking the pressure off them in game 3 (as 4 points mean we are in it to win it now. We are in the KO stages).
Either rest em in game 3 or use than as super subs in 2nd half. Priority is to peak in the final. Grow game by game.
11 - Calm down. Do yo daily prayers, sleep well, get fully focussed & be brave.
As brave Kyle said, tournaments are like the UCL, when the reds ( LFC ) lost 0-3 to Messi Xavi Ineista of Barcelona. 99.9% of pundits wrote off Klopps boys but they still won the cup via that brave corner by Trent.
The reds were also losing 0-3 at half time to Don Carlo's AC Milan & still won the trophy via that brave headed goal by Stevie G 🏆.
Man U were losing in the 90th minute & still defeated Bayern via that injury time clinical finish by Teddy & Ole.
    CALM DOWN -
    PRAY/Meditate WELL -
    SLEEP WELL -
    FULLY FOCUSSED -
    BE BRAVE.
    Professor AGHaq.

England's football infrastruture is poundfor pound the best on Earth. That alone justifies high expectations! Germany, France, Spain and Italy have similar levels of footballing infrastructure but all have won a WC or Euros in the past 20 years. England is the odd one out! England has produced as good players as them also. Scholes stands up with Ozil, Inzaghi, Iniesta, or Griezzman. Kane is as good as Villa, Muller, Totti, or Benzema. English fans have a RIGHT to high expectations!!

This problem goes much deeper than Southgate. It stinks of the whole FA culture of fear, cowardice and arrogance that they are the gatekeepers to the mystique of international tournament football. Just think back over every tournament for decades. Same script, same rationalisation, the same talking yourself out of a power game before anyone has kicked a ball. Most squads have lost before they get on the plane, never mind onto the pitch.
The whole FA bureaucracy has to go, as they are the masters of nothing but maintaining their own positions and prestige

  • @tomr8041

Let's be honest, England underperforming is nothing new. I've been watching tournaments since 1990 and it's happened over and over again. I don't think a single player in our current team would get into the starting 11 of the 2004 side, except for maybe Pickford. And what did that side do? Underperform. All the different players over the years, all the different coaches, and ironically, the closest we have ever come is under Southgate. There is either something mentally that happens to our teams at these tournaments, or perhaps more likely, we fail to realize that the prem is simply not that much of a higher standard than other leagues. We like to think it is but it isn't. So when a player like Foden performs so well in the prem, we assume he will be leagues ahead on the international stage and it simply doesn't happen.

The Danes on the other hand already knew in advance that they stood a fair chance of getting a good result against England - especially after watching their ratger poor match against Serbia and how many problems England had playing forward from around their penalty area region when they were being pressured very aggressively.

You don't think Italy in the last Euros were under pressure themselves as the 4 times world champions? You don't think Germany are under pressure this tournament to win a trophy in front of their fans? Sod off the pressure from the media nonsense. BUT! It is the form of saying that.
They play/fight for you. So it is your task to help/supporting that Team.

With that in mind, how would you rate the performance of the 12th?
But in England is more, "the have millions! WE have make them! They are supposed to fight me, of course..."
That is the tricky thing, in every Nation. To find the right tone.
And for this task, the UK-/US-Media have the worst conceivable Conditions.
Your have the potential to change that/something. But you just never do something in a different/better way...
