    If you need a resource to practice reading EKGs here is one of my favorite websites.
    www.skillstat.com/tools/ecg-simulator
    7/3/2022
    FAQs & Answers:
    Q: What kind of training do you need to become a monitor tech?
    A: Each facility has different requirements. If you know where you want to work, ask the monitor techs about their training and how to get hired.
    Q: How much do monitor techs get paid?
    A: The answer will vary across different states and based on the minimum wage.
    Option 1 - Google "monitor tech salary in (city/state)"
    B: Option 2 - Ask a monitor tech from a nearby facility
    Q: How can I get a job as a monitor tech?
    A:
    Option 1: If you do not have medical experience and didn't have formal training, you need to get medical experience. Get your foot in the door by working in the cafe, housekeeping, admissions, etc. In most places, you can transfer after working for 6 months. Hospitals are more likely to hire internal transfers with a good work history. Get into position and network.
    Option 2 - Search for monitor tech jobs in your area and review the qualifications.
    Option 3 - Ask the monitor techs in your area.

      Can I ask you how has Covid affected your job currently?

    • @TeachQueenQ
      @TeachQueenQ  4 года назад +3

      The biggest change that occurred is with cleaning the telemetry boxes, which we don't actually do in our war room (poor ventilation). The COVID floor stores a specific amount of boxes for their patients to prevent cross contamination. I still work the same amount of hours every week and it really hasn't changed our workflow. I imagine the situation would be different if my job included patient interaction though. Hope this helps! 😊

      @@TeachQueenQ I'm confused by the laSt sentence how do you putt the patches on ?

    • @TeachQueenQ
      @TeachQueenQ  4 года назад +3

      The RNs and PCTs put the leads on the patients. At our hospital the monitor tech literally just monitor the patient's rhythm. We are very fortunate to work in this type of environment because most places require the MTs to put the patient's on tele and troubleshoot them.

    I see a lot of people are confusing the two jobs. EKG Tech is not the same thing as a Monitor Tech. You don’t have to go to school to be a MT. It is usually a few hours of a basic EKG class followed by an on the job training. EKG Techs have a several week long program and they perform EKGs, stress tests, fit Holter Monitors, etc in either Cardiology clinics or cardiopulmonary areas in hospitals.

    • @jayeandre6987
      @jayeandre6987 2 года назад +3

      You’re expected to remember them as soon as you finish the class. Most places have charts up but a lot of what you see on the screen will NOT look like the charts, books, practice strips, etc. They tend to show perfect examples of rhythms/dysrhythmias. The more you do the job the easier it becomes to recognize them. There will be times you will have to really think on a rhythm because it will look funky.

    I use to do this years ago. But the way things have changed it concerns me. I use to eork on a heart floor and we had up to 24 pts. Now they combined and moved the ekg techs. Meaning a tech can have up to 60 patients, and you may not even be on sight. So you have to call the hospital and floor, and have staff check on the pt.
    When the techs were on the floor, in the department if staff was busy and leads came off, which they always do. The ekg tech can run into the room and fix it.
    My point if safety, also it can be difficult to get breaks, etc. These concerns have kept me from returning to this job.

    I plan to take a class on EKG next year so I can get a job as a monitor/EKG tech. I need the experience for med school
    I’m 2 minutes and 37 seconds in and it already sounds pretty hard. Hopefully they’ll train me before I start on my own even though I should be certified at that point anyway

      Issy learning to read ekgs can be hard. It's kind of like learning a new language. I went through a 4 hour course through the hospital and got hired for a position soon after. They trained me for about 1 week and I made sure I asked lots of questions and I was very honest about my lack of experience. Try learning to identify the basic rhythms as fast as you can though (sinus rhythm, afib/aflutter, junctional, etc).

      TeachQueenQ
      The hospital themselves gave you a class? And it was only 4hours? I thought it took a month to complete the class from I looked up, but then again I wasn’t aware hospitals could also teach you. I’ll have to do more research
      Hopefully when and if they hire me I’ll remember to ask questions as well. I’m the type of guy to ask a lot of questions and write them down so I don’t forget, hopefully it doesn’t annoy them 😅

      Yeah I was already working for the hospital and my manager pushed me to take the class. It was just a crash course, so I'm not a certified tech, but I passed the test 😂.

      There is no way to miss it once you learn/know what to look for. One thing about it, if they are throwing blocks they are going to be Brady. You just need to be able to see what,if anything, is causing it on the strip.

I got a lot of idea of the Tele job from this video. What's your opinion of EKG Tech for a job in Houston? I guess it's more patient-oriented (face to face) and more mobility during the day. Any info you can provide is appreciated!

      Sarah Jane I agree! It was very hard when I first started and I even cried a few times because I didn't feel that I'd ever fully understand the rhythms. What helped me the most was to practice reading rhythms at home. I used these two websites and I recommend them to anyone learning ekgs!

    • @TeachQueenQ
      @TeachQueenQ  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi! This is a great question! Watching the monitors is one part of this role. There are alarms beeping at all times, but they make different sounds to differentiate the event. So you need to be able to hear the alarms because there’s no way you can keep your eyes on all 50+ patients at one time. We also make a lot of calls to the floor staff and there are overhead pages we need to hear. Most of the equipment has settings that allow you to adjust the volume - phones, Vocera, monitor alarms, etc. With that being said… I think that if you are in a unit with multiple Monitor Techs it would be helpful. So if you’re interested in this role, I’d encourage you to shadow someone and see if you’re comfortable😊.
