I understand no one will read this, but....
Andrew !!! Good & honest video. I'm 62 - been riding since I was about 5. I am a diehard DR650 fan. It is the best bike I have ever owned. My 1979 Husqvarna 390 OR is a close second. All of you comments are correct & on point. I have a 2013 and it will do anything you ask of it... on road - or off. Wheelies, jumps, camping, out in the desert, or buzzing around town. I've owned mine for 9 years now - and it IS bulletproof - never been to the shop & you can do ALL the maintenance yourself. I cannot speak highly enough about THE MIGHTY SUZUKI DR650 !!!!! Even in the summer here (PHX, AZ) when it's 120° - at stop lights - The Mighty DR 650 does not care at all.... Trust me !!!!

The seat I have done. Great adventure bike. I love it.

I would add that the cush hub bearing is poor quality out of the factory. Mine blew at 14000 km. I was luck it did not do more damage. For the lean mixture you can fix it by removing the brass plug that blocks the air/fuel mixture screw on the carb. Once removed unscrew one to one and a half turn.

I am old school i guess because i like the way my DR looks. As far as the front fender i like the stock fender. I ride year round and those short narrow front fender just do not do a good job of keeping road grime and water off your face. Of course the looks and fenders are more personal not a real deal on performance. You covered the bike really well. It has so much aftermarket stuff. That is a huge advantage with this bike

I'm old school too and I've always liked the way the DR650 looks, after it's re-design in '96. I always thought it was a really good looking bike. I bought mine new back in '05. Never had any issues with it. Rebuilt the top end at 65,000 miles, and new clutch plates. To me that's a lot of miles for an air-cooled single, and it was still running fine, just getting a little loose and using more oil; rings were wearing out. The nikasil cylinder liner was still perfectly in spec. Oh yeah, and cush-hub rubbers were worn out, very sloppy, but those are simply replacement and expected to wear out anyway.

I've ridden a friend's DR650 straight after jumping off an XR650l and my only complaint (besides soft suspension) was that I felt the first gear was a bit too tall for slower single track type riding. More clutching was necessary. Besides that I thought it was a great bike and a better street bike than the XR.

procycle sells a Wide Ratio Transmission from Nova Racing. Drops 1 and 2nd as much as 7.6% (B set) under stock gearing and 4th and 5th gear 4.8 and 4.3% above stock, essentially like dropping a front sprocket tooth (or two!) down low and going up a front sprocket tooth in the top gears. Its my next mod…

I bought a brand new one in 21' and from my experience tires, skid plate, engine armor,a real set of bark busters and lower foot pegs are the first things to consider. The Kenda classic 257 17" 5:10 fits great on the rear and the same I think it's a 21/80/100 on the front. Then I went with the moose tail rack, some tusk saddle bags and I found a cheap backpack at the second hand store for a buck or two. BTW watch those places because you never know what you're gonna find in unused gear I ended up with a first gear heated jacket for 100 bucks along with the gloves and remote control, oops I guess that was a garage sale. So there's my list hope it helps.

We live in a world of adventure bike sporks and a spork is a one utensil solution that kind of sucks as a fork and is a sieve as a spoon. The DR650 is the most well rounded spork. She is a 6 off road and a 6 on road but that is as balanced as it gets in one bike. Every bike better off road is not as good on the highway as a DR and every bike better on the highway is less good off road as a DR. Very easy to maintain and fun bikes to own. You never have to take one to a dealer. Learn to adjust the valves yourself in minutes with a deck screw and .004" and .008" feeler gauge and lube is all they ever need aside from tires and chains.

  • @trevorjameson3213
    @trevorjameson3213 5 месяцев назад +3

Excellent points you made, every one of them should be considered by someone buying this bike. I've had a DR650 since 2005 so I'm very familiar with all of the things you mentioned. But to me, the only important issues are the upper chain roller and the neutral light switch. The carb can be adjusted 'good enough' by simply removing the brass plug and opening up the fuel/air screw a little bit. But only if you're using the stock muffler and keeping the air box stock. The suspension is fine, really. It's soft but for general trail riding and especially street riding, it's good. Tires are good for street, bad for off-road. Seat is hard but I never had an issue with it. Overall, it's an excellent bike and extremely durable and reliable.

A 27 yr old DR650 is still a better choice than a CRF300. Far more capable and one of the largest aftermarkets of any motorcycle. I've had zero issues with my '03 at 20 yrs of hard riding.

      @natekerx85 6 месяцев назад +6

I’ve had both, can’t say I agree with that. Crf lighter and way more capable off-road, pretty good once you get the suspension sorted. Much much better engine and gearbox for the street. Less power obviously but faster in the woods nonetheless. Xr650 is a real bike though

Honda has fallen from grace in recent years since they moved manufacturing to China and started hiring a large number of bad engineers. The past decade has been a pretty consistent decline in quality. New Hondas are nothing like they were 20 or 30 years ago. Yamaha and Suzuki still make most of their legacy dual sports in Japan. But overall the legacy bikes are still better than the new ones because the engineers are not as good anymore. The new engineers are cramming a bunch of useless electronic garbage into their machines. They're all putting Wi-Fi in dirt bikes for God's sake. 🤡

@@natekerx85It's 90% rider, 10% bike. The DR is only 30 lbs heavier, but with double the torque. It's all personal preference. If I was only woods riding, a KDX220 would be my choice. For a dual sport that I do road ride, the DR650 punches the ticket with a wide ratio box, and lots of bottom end. It's relaxed at 70mph, with power to spare, the CRF is ringing hard already.

Great video showing the strengths and weaknesses of the mighty DR.
I smiled when I saw my fingers pointing at the hole in the frame where the top chain roller was torn out.
I took the picture to show everyone on ADVRider DR650 thread that it does happen!
I bought the bike used with high mileage and every bearing in the bike needed replacing along with chain, sprockets, brakes...
And it is still one of my favorite bikes. I have two of them in fact, one set up as a travel bike with a 5 gallon IMS tank, and all the usual ADV add-ons, and one set up as a light weight street legal dirt bike for shorter day rides. One to go far at lower speeds and one for short distances quickly. Of course both have excellent suspension from Cogent Dynamics.
Also, both of my DR's NSU screws were loose. My theory is that as the engine heats up the plastic NSU expands slightly and holds the screws tight. But if the bike does a lot of starts and stops before the engine heats up the screws slowly loosen up.
Just a theory but a drop of Blue Loctite (med strength) solves that potential problem.

@@MotorcyclesOffroad Many of us have proved that blue Loctite is fine. Some like the safety wire but I think it is overkill. Or maybe Loctite and safety wire is overkill. The DR is heavy, compared to oranges, rather than the apples.
Apples, as in, what single thumpers cost less than $8000 USD. (MSRP) Five speeds.
    XR650 Yamaha 350 LBS. DR650 Suzuki 370 LBS. KLR650 450LBS.
    XR650 Yamaha $7000 . DR650 Suzuki $7000. KLR650 $8000.
XR650 Yamaha Air cooled. DR650 Suzuki Air/Oil. KLR650 Water cooled.
DR650 has a tall 3-4th gear, it can ride on the freeway without burning/blowing up. Seat height is mid-range. 30 inch inseam can get both balls of the feet down. 10 inch ground clearance. 10 inch suspension travel. Rear shock kind sux.
The XR650 is the closest to a dirt bike. Not so good freeway. Very tall. One foot down, with effort. 13 inch ground clearance. 11 inch suspension travel.
KLR650 more street and groomed gravel. Low ground clearance 8". Smallest suspension travel 8". Low seat. Can be lowered even more.

    Haha its not top dollar.
Adventure bikes cost more than regular street bikes. Dual sports cost even more and Ill tell you why.
Adventure bikes cost more than streete bikes cos they have to make suitable for roads and light off road.
    What about Dual Sports?
Think of Dual sports being 50% road, 50% off road whereas Adventure bikes are made to be 75% road, 25% off road.
So they would cost even more!
People bitch a lot about the DRZ400 and the DR650 being so dated but its actually brilliant.
If they had advanced all the tech and design all these years on their dual sports those bikes would be $9k-$10k all day and most of us would never get one.

Carbs are either air mix or fuel mix screw adjustable. Not both.
If your bike is air screw (screw is on airbox side of carb) screwing in makes the mix rich, screwing out makes it lean. In reducing the amount of air, out increases amount of air.
(DR650 stock is air screw carb Mikuni)
If your bike is a fuel screw (screw will be on the engine side of the carb, screwing in reduces the amount of fuel, screwing out increases amount of fuel.
The DR650 is 366 pounds, about. When you use words like "heavy" you are making a comparison to something.
If you compare it to a 125cc Honda, yeah, its heavy.
The XR650 weighs 293 pounds. The KLR650 weighs 387 pounds
(According to manufacturer released specs. All three are five speeds and cost new around 7000 to 8000 USD)
Suspension. Progressive (and stiffer) springs solve the fork problem. Spacers and and a heavier fork oil are cheap options.
A heavier rear spring solves the rear. The rear stock has preload and compression damping adjustment. No rebound adjustment.

I had one for 12 years. One of my all time favorite cycles. It wasn't the best off roader but worked fine. A bit heavy for the class and the suspension is just OK but with 11 inches of travel it still works. The ride is great and the power is much more than you would feel it is on paper. It really amazed me how well it handles the twisties, even on the stock knob tires. I think it needs a 6th gear for the faster stuff. A bash guard needs to be added straight away if you plan to go offroad. Other than that, I the only issue I had with the bike is the typical starter issue where it sounds like a rooster when starting the bike. That also happened to two other DR owners I know. Great bike though. I would get another one today.

@@MotorcyclesOffroad Suzuki fixed the lower cylinder gasket back in '03 I believe it was. They also fixed the neutral switch thing at some point after '09 I think? < They added blue loctite to the screws. They also started adding the countershaft seal brace/bracket sometime before 2015. A friend had a new '15 model and it already had that part installed. My '05, when new, did not. But people should still remove the upper chain roller, that is a serious issue and should be addressed. Along with the fuel/air screw, which should adjusted immediately before even running the bike. The "third gear exploding issue" may or not have been fixed, or, it may not have been an issue to begin with. I never could find good information about it, and I never knew anyone with a DR650 whose 3rd gear exploded, so that issue may not exist anyway, just don't know.

As a former 990 owner. Ktm makes a great bike but….. have a bike slush fund separate from your checking.
If you’re married you ll thank me later.

I think I read somewhere that Suzuki addressed that NSU in 2014.

I don't like that you used the term "Econazi" just cause people want the air a bit cleaner...

They're definitely econazis. It's ok to want cleaner ait without using fear tactics and handing undue amounts if power to government. Even the founder of green peace said people have taken it entirely off the rails

The header pipe definitely glows from factory. You can’t see it in the daylight unless you push it in a dark garage etc. But at night ya.
I thought something was wrong and dealer said was normal. I rejetted it anyway and put a slip on exhaust on. Doesn’t glow as much now.
Imo the headlight sucks and is unsafe. I put a cyclops ultra bulb in and not kidding a huge improvement and cars can see you in the day.
Nice vid. Seen your review video also. Pretty much spot on.

Suzuki used to paint the header pipe black, and you couldn't see the pipe glow. But now, they are not painted, and may be of a thinner material also, so you can see it glow. I had a YZ426 years ago, and it's header glowed too.

Here's what all this amounts to... if you are old buy a Suzuki. If you just like to putter around the farm, buy a Suzuki. If you want to do serious shite then buy a Honda, Yamaha or even better a KTM. Why in the hell someone in 2024 would buy a below average bike from 20 years ago is beyond me. We need to put Suzuki out of the car and motorcycle business. They are at the bottom when it comes to transpotation in the U.S. Poor people love to buy these. I would rather buy a used YZ450 than a new DR650. What are you thinking? Stop buying this crap.
