My wife's 2013 Impala just started doing this. It's weird that it does it just from unlocking the doors with keyless entry as well. Thank you for showing that it could be something simple to replace in my driveway.

This was video was very helpful in locating the actuator. I had to replace it in a '13 Impala. It was a very easy fix, just had a difficult time trying to find the 5.5 millimeter socket. But I had the issue with the windshield fogging up pretty bad in the early morning. Not to mention, I had to drive in fog as well, plus avoid deer on the highway. For that reason, I replaced it in about 20 minutes.
Thank you for your help!! About 1 month, Paul young Chevrolet in Laredo TX robbed me with $513.00 bucks, and the noise come again in a month.!! Beware Paul young dealers, and Mr Martinez service assessor, when I made my claim , he told me, that my car has a 5 blend door actuator!! Pure fraud!!

The funny and stupid thing about the replacement actuator motors is they still use the same shitty plastic gears that the broken ones used. Hey GM, use METAL gears they last damned near forever!
I was thinking the same thing. But it's not really because they are made out of plastic, but more of the groove depth for the teeth. One of the 3 gears in the case has some free play (wobbles some) which causes the teeth of the one next to the motor to slip out of the groove, causing the clicking noise (and sooner or later a possible broken tooth on the gear). Now if the grooves were deeper, it'd require longer teeth and less chance of the teeth slipping out of the grooves. Or that's the way it is in my 07 Monte. In my opinion, they can still use plastic gears, but need to redesign them some. 1.) they need to make them stiffer or pinned more so they don't move during operation. 2.) change the depth of the grooves and teeth The current one's they use have teeth similar to these: 4.imimg.com/data4/BI/TD/MY-4410421/plastic-gear-500x500.jpg . Now with one of the gears moving out away from the others, the teeth in the gear system slips on one of the gears, causing the clicking. They should do the teeth and grooves like these: deborahrfowler.com/MathForVSFX/Examples/GearRatio1.gif . where they are more deeper and have less of a chance to slip out of the grooves. I noted this as an issue when I took one of my old ones apart and noticed that sometimes it's just the very tips of the teeth touching, and sometimes they would slip.
@@thomasyoung5013 True, but they can do some redesign and make them last for more than a few months in some cases to a year in others. Especially paying anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 for the car (if not more), they should last a little longer.

Quality GM craftsmenship and parts... Thanks for the video, very informative for people who don't want to spend the money on labor at a shop.

Thank god i know someone who knows how to fix cars... the one on my impala just started doing this a couple weeks ago.. my passenger airbag is also malfunctioning.
You sir, are awesome. So glad you did make this video. Last night, my '09 made this noise for the first time, and I had no idea what that was or if it was serious. Glad it wasn't and now I know how to deal with it. How much did the actuator cost? Is the process the same if it had been the other actuator?

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanx! I don't know which actuator I'm having problems with yet but I hope it this one because it looks really easy to access.
Hey Daniel, this just started happening to my 2012 chevy impala. I had the motor and pump replaced. It was good for a week then this noise started. I looked up the issue and your video was the 1st to pop up. I wanted to ask you, if I took the defective actuator out but the new comes in will that hurt the car? I drive for lyft and I don't want my passengers hearing that noise(I cant even stand it)!! Tonight it started going off and the car was sitting for 5 hours so not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated, ty so much!
Thank You! Your video was extremely helpful to me as I am not mechanically inclined but was successful in changing out the actuator with your detailed video.
yep, all I have to do is walk by mine with my keys in my pocket, I could live with the tap on the glove box side, but the middle one is very loud, but it only last a minute and stops,
I have the sound on my glove box side and in the center. the center one is so annoying and embarrassing when I am leaving work! I wonder if my co-workers hear it lol
oh wow .. mine did the same thing .. REALLY loud and clunking .. then .. stopped .. haven't heard it since .. bah, who knows .. more work for hubby to do on this car, along with the rear window defrost ..
Thank you so much ! … just to add my symptoms for the benefit of others … when I unlock door with the fob it starts even with the engine off, also after shutdown, closing the door or locking the door,
If I unplug the actuator to stop the clicking noise will it hurt my car? I still get AC and heat so that's not the problem I just get a clicking noise so I unplugged it. Any help would be appreciated.
Great video! I have noticed that plenum doors and vent louvers get very stiff over time. I wonder if that is the root cause of the gear motor actuators jumping teeth or slipping. The old actuator sure sounded like it was straining to turn the door. It would be interesting to compare the motor current before and after cleaning the plenum. Also, comparing how easy the shaft turns before and after. Perhaps it is worth while to date the gear that attaches to the plenum door shaft off of the old actuator and use that as a knob to stick on the plenum door shaft to see how hard it is to turn.
That's exactly what it is. They are designed to react when opening or closing the doors. This is suppose to eliminate cabin pressure when slammihg a door shut. Pointless cheap plastic gears that are in constant use. Each time you open or close the doors.
@3alexp40 Yes, you should clean the plenum if the door is too stiff. Tha tcan be a real pain to do. Eventually, a new gear motor will not be powerful enough to overcome the resitance. So, it is a good idea to check the dooer when changing a gear motor.
@@PJHLRAny idea why this clicking noise is happening when the car is off and nothing is switched on or off? I think it drained my battery. I walked out to my car to go to work and walked up to the car making this noise.
The tapping sound in my impala happens when I open the door to get in my car.... HOW SWAY?!?! The keys aren't even in the ignition and it's happening when I open the door
how did you fix it? mine is doing the same thing all of a sudden. ac works fine, change air location works, noise stops lik 40 seconds after i start the car. stealership yesterday - "yea thats common, abount 650 to fix it....wtf????
the car automatically switches the fresh air/recirculation motor to the fresh air setting when someone opens a door or the trunk. it does this to prevent air pressure from being crammed into your ears when the door or trunk is closed.
Same as well but with my 04 Pontic Grand Prix. Ticking is driving me nuts I feel like my car is gonna ignite and blow up or something. Luckily it wasnt anything too serious.
That noise came up out of nowhere, i nearly crashed lol but thank you so much for the information and how to install ill be purchasing one today because im so sick of hearing the loud tapping its driving me nuts
Yes, there's one on both sides. Unfortunately, the one on the driver side is a lot harder to fix than the passenger side since it is harder to get to. I've fixed both of them on mine and now the passenger side is needing to be replaced again.
Thank you so much for making this video. Now I don't have to bother my kid's dad about fixing it any more. I can do it myself. Maybe even help someone else out!
mindyschocolate the thing is.. for me. it comes and goes. there was a few days where it was 65 and sunny. didn't tap at all. then it rained so the humidity increased and it came back with a vengeance. also if it was something serious I would take care of it. but it's so insignificant that I have put it off for like 3 months..
Coffee Fresh yeah it does seem to come and go, because after I heard mine knocking, it stopped doing it and hasn't done it since. I first heard it when I arrived home and turned my car off. I was worried because I didn't know what it was and thought maybe when I took my car in to get the battery replaced they had jacked something up. So I went on RUclips to find out what was causing it and came across this one. It's an '09 with 101,000 on it, so I guess there's going to be some quirks. So glad it's nothing major though.
my 2009 was doing it on the glove box side, but its not real loud, and its been doing it for about 2 years, I asked Chevy and they told me it won't hurt your battery or anything so I just left it alone. A friend knows how to fix it and bought the tool to do the job , was going to have him do it but now the center one is doing it and it much much louder, so I will have this one fixed

@@rhinoleveling there's a plethora of videos on RUclips showing people how to do this process themselves, without removing the dash, in less than 20 minutes. 50 bucks should be plenty to give someone to do this
The sound really didn't bother me much to fix it. But I finally got rid of that car and got a camaro!
Absolutely awesome. Almost took my car to the dealership before seeing your video. Thanks a million
Thank you!. My wife's 2007 Impala is doing this when the AC is used.
Mine does too
Thank you! Now to figure which one LOL. Been driving me crazy!
Walked out of apartment complex heard noise thinking to myself "like wtf, i parked further away!!! But i KNOW 1000% car is an IMPALA!!! "
YEP, Someone else CHEVY IMPALA knocking at me,lol
Thank you so so much for this. Mine just started making this sound, you've saved my a lot of time and piece of mind!
Glad i found this....that noise was diving me nuts
I saw this vid in my recommend and watched it even though my Impala has never had the problem... Literally the next day I get in my car and it has the same problem, crazy. At least I know how to fix it now lol
Thank you. I used a ratchet driver with a 7/32. Very easy.
actually, I am glad you made this video, I did not know this was a common problem with these cars, thought my wife's was the only one since her Impala is nothing and has been nothing but a piece of junk.
I had this replaced 2 years ago, this time I'll just do it my self.
Thank you so much.. I couldn’t understand what that noise was . I actually thought it was my coolant reservoir. I will order today 💯
thanks for the video.. helped me fix the problem on mine.. and saved me a lot of money.
I fixed the actuator i bore s fuse f9r the blower after replacing the the fude the blower want quit blowing
Blew.a fuse.for the.blowe niw the bl9wer want quit
With key off or on bloeer keeps running
Thank god i know someone who knows how to fix cars... the one on my impala just started doing this a couple weeks ago.. my passenger airbag is also malfunctioning.
5,5mm or 7/32 in, if you need imperial size.
Just changed one on my daughter's Impala. Thanks for the tutorial, it helped.
You sir, are awesome. So glad you did make this video. Last night, my '09 made this noise for the first time, and I had no idea what that was or if it was serious. Glad it wasn't and now I know how to deal with it. How much did the actuator cost? Is the process the same if it had been the other actuator?
Not just the ac and heater causes mine it’s also opening the door and starting the car and soon possibly looking at the car if I don’t start to fix it but thanks for the video it worked
i got rid of my 07 impala things kept going downhill... upgraded to my 2011 malibu it had less then 64k miles when i purchased it last feb. the only thing ive had to replace is a tpms sensor. SOOOOOO MUCH BETTER.
Maranda Nelson I had a Malibu before and I had more problems with mine than you did with your Impala, So i understand the pain, I'm about fed up with GM Products!!!!
Still have my 07 impala. What a piece of shit. I wish i never bought it lol. Nice car with the 3.9 LT but im not keeping this piece of shit once I'm done fixing everything myself.
I have a 09 Impala LS with the 3.5, been a great car, this is really the first problem I have had with it, and its over 130,000 miles. I really like the car, and will buy another Chevy, next time a Malibu but thinking about a 2015
califdad4 they work fine until 200.000 miles then everything goes to hell...smh
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanx! I don't know which actuator I'm having problems with yet but I hope it this one because it looks really easy to access.
Thanks for the help. I owe you a beer.
Did u ever do it
Mine just started this TODAY...I will be doing this, this week when I'm off work..Thanks
My car makes this noise when I open the door when it is not even running, do you think it is the same problem?
Amy Schuette yes it is the same problem. Mine was doing the same thing and I just replaced it today.
yep, all I have to do is walk by mine with my keys in my pocket, I could live with the tap on the glove box side, but the middle one is very loud, but it only last a minute and stops,
I have the sound on my glove box side and in the center. the center one is so annoying and embarrassing when I am leaving work! I wonder if my co-workers hear it lol
Mines to when I walk near the damn car 😠 I believe it sense me coming
Same here my 2013 impala does the same thing shit is driving me nuts
Noise had me thinking my car was about to explode 🤦🏽♂️😂
Thank you so much.. I was so scared and I pulled over..
I did the same thing real fast sound like it was gonna blow up😞😞
oh wow .. mine did the same thing .. REALLY loud and clunking .. then .. stopped .. haven't heard it since .. bah, who knows .. more work for hubby to do on this car, along with the rear window defrost ..
This just happened to me scared me to death I was thinking the car would blow
Thank you so much ! … just to add my symptoms for the benefit of others … when I unlock door with the fob it starts even with the engine off, also after shutdown, closing the door or locking the door,
currently at the auto shop fixing this problem LMAO 💀😂
Run the system on fresh air only. Disconnect the door actuator. Problem solved on mine 7 years ago.
If I unplug the actuator to stop the clicking noise will it hurt my car? I still get AC and heat so that's not the problem I just get a clicking noise so I unplugged it. Any help would be appreciated.
Does passenger also get cold air
I’m wondering that too
I just wanna say thank u very much ! 😂I been wondering where the hell that noise was coming from
why can't GM find an actuator supplier that can make one that lasts. they've been doing this for 20- 30 years and still can't get it right.
never had the issue on my Cadillac or my Suburban
cause china cheapest xD
Cause they just wanna keep making money
@NihilisticEntropy The parts are not made in America.
@NihilisticEntropy On the sticker of the 2 actuators that I took out of my 2012 Impala it says Made in China.
Thanks I didn't know what the sound was but it turns out that it's the exact same problem that you showed on your video
@@changesinlife7009 so should you clean the plenum to avoid this problem in the future?
O
@3alexp40 Yes, you should clean the plenum if the door is too stiff. Tha tcan be a real pain to do. Eventually, a new gear motor will not be powerful enough to overcome the resitance. So, it is a good idea to check the dooer when changing a gear motor.
@@PJHLRAny idea why this clicking noise is happening when the car is off and nothing is switched on or off? I think it drained my battery. I walked out to my car to go to work and walked up to the car making this noise.
thank you so much.i was having this tapping problem.your video is gonna help me fix this problem tomorrow i hope.
The tapping sound in my impala happens when I open the door to get in my car.... HOW SWAY?!?! The keys aren't even in the ignition and it's happening when I open the door
Trip333s me too!!!
same here , even if I open the trunk
how did you fix it? mine is doing the same thing all of a sudden. ac works fine, change air location works, noise stops lik 40 seconds after i start the car. stealership yesterday - "yea thats common, abount 650 to fix it....wtf????
the car automatically switches the fresh air/recirculation motor to the fresh air setting when someone opens a door or the trunk. it does this to prevent air pressure from being crammed into your ears when the door or trunk is closed.
OMG it gets worse! Mine started this in the glovebox and within a couple days it has started in 3 or 4 other places.
You said passenger side actuator. Does that mean there is one on the drivers side. My 2012 beauty just started this.
Yes theres one for each side.
Yes, there's one on both sides. Unfortunately, the one on the driver side is a lot harder to fix than the passenger side since it is harder to get to. I've fixed both of them on mine and now the passenger side is needing to be replaced again.
Thank you for this video, worked for my 2008 Impala, well appreciated. One of several quirks with the Impala.
Had the same problem with my 09 impala last month
Thank you so much for making this video. Now I don't have to bother my kid's dad about fixing it any more. I can do it myself. Maybe even help someone else out!
Your kids dad??? Yourself??
I drive an impala police cruiser. I love my cop car but it's shitty that this is a problem with almost every impala.
Coffee Fresh mine just started that last night. I've had it for almost 8 years with no problem before hand.
mindyschocolate the thing is.. for me. it comes and goes. there was a few days where it was 65 and sunny. didn't tap at all. then it rained so the humidity increased and it came back with a vengeance. also if it was something serious I would take care of it. but it's so insignificant that I have put it off for like 3 months..
THIS VIDEO IS GREAT NOT MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS GREAT ANGLE USUALLY ITS IN THE DARK AND THEY TELL YOU WHT TO FEEL FOR I RATHER SEE WHAT TO DO THANK YOU ✅
Two ways to fix a problem:
1) Unplug it! Or,
2) Crank the tunes! 😀
Will there b any harm if I unplug it tho?
Will it harm anything someone tell meee
Everybody I know had these cars had this problem. My friend has one that’s knocking now in 2023 so I decided to try to help em fix the problem
MY AIR CONDITIONER DOES NOT WORK, NOR DOES MY REAR DEFOG. THIS TICKING GOES ON FOR ABOUT A MINUTE THEN TURNS OFF.
R.J. Johnson mines also don’t work and it makes this noise too I’m thinking of replacing the heater motor
there are a few really good videos for the defog .. check them out on here and get your wire cutters out ..
lol…. The problems continue. Thank you for this video!
my impala doing it now
so thankful to have one that’s never had an issue with it
yup I have a 2010 impala just started
I had purchased a newer Impala for my grandson to replace his older one. Some things never change- the rat-tat-tat of the actuator returns! Amazing GM still has not corrected this problem!!
That's why I don't deal with duel climate crap I buy my pickups with hardly no options life is much easier
If you’ll just get your phone hooked up to the Bluetooth on the radio its an easy fix.
Once it’s linked up and the music starts playing, put the volume on max and the tapping goes away
my 2007 monte Carlo does it
thank you it fixed the issue and only cost me $40, i did get cut my finger like yours though.
I got mine fixed...now it's running hot!!why???????
Ever find out?
