  • A goat keeping an eye on the music, traders, gamblers and a preacher all part of the annual Puck Fair.
King Puck in “majestic isolation” oversees the celebrations in the Kerry town of Killorglin.
There was brisk business for the street traders and food stalls as locals and visitors flocked to the town for the annual Puck Fair festival. Another feature of the fair is the street musicians and Irish dancers. There was also a brisk trade in livestock.
A lay preacher on the street who attracted a small audience for his sermon and had a word of warning for festival goers.
Sooner or later, the merriment had to end.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 13 August 1975. The reporter is Dermot Mullane.

Reminds me of the old Lammas fair in Ballycastle in the old days, it had swing boats, stalls, food, music, craic, horses and preachers, still has most of this but gone are the local characters that made it, a lot of cheap tat now to buy and it has lost all the fun of the fair. Good times, more simple but good none the less. Great wee videos 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤

Young boys and girls wit bell bottom pants, tight short sleeve tops, long hair. I could have been there, one of them at 27 years old, but I left 10 years before for the land of riches and fine looking bitches. I found some riches and bitches and more than that, but I will always miss the love of an Irish lass…the hair , the smile , the lash of a quick Irish tongue. I wonder now in 2021, what else have I missed?

They should replace the goat with an artificial one. Not right to treat a living animal like that.

I was there that year. I was only 12, went down from Dublin with 3 lads same age. Utter craziness of it compared to now, but that was the ways things were in Ireland. People just wandered about without a care in the world. I can remember the Germans camping down at the bridge. The beer barrel racing down the Main Street. It was wild with energy and madness. Life is too sane and controlled to have anything like it today.

There's always one of you fearful isolationists in these comment sections. Lamenting the passing of a more restrictive and unwelcoming world. Lamenting precisely the things we're better off without, and ignoring all the _real_ good squirreled away in history.

@@Jesse__H No it’s not isolationist. It’s looking at a country and traditions and noting how good it was and still can be. It’s about not handing the country that thousands of generations of Irish people built and saying “why do people who invented and did nothing for thousands of years deserve to take it ahead of the native population? (Note: Africa was still in the Bronze Age in the twentieth century)

High time to put a goat STATUE up there and let the wild goat go wild, the poor thing must be terrified. Tradition be damned at one time it was tradition to go barefoot and hungry but now we can afford better things. Let's give the goat his freedom and show the world that we are civilized and kind. Come on Kerry !!

@@chollyappleseed1969 Pride and/or admiration of the Puck Fair is misguided.
Internationally there is no question that most citizens of the developed nations will learn of this event in horror.
It is an embarrassment and a simple change, namely replacing the live animal with an inanimate item representing the goat, would be courageous on the part of the organizers and admired by people in Ireland and countries the world over.
