I live in northern NY, Rhinebeck is about a 5 hour drive south for me, and I've never been. Every fall I feel torn about it because I want to go, but I think I would hate the busyness. I'm glad you spoke about it, it makes me feel better about not going. Crowds are so draining for me.
I have been told that Sunday is much calmer- i think i would go on a sunday if i was going again- or perhaps be stricter about having a decent rest and break!
4 ply in the US means how many plys the yarn has :) It's DK weight. I was confused forever on the British 4 ply, 2 ply etc. Funny how we have to confuse things for ourselves LOL
Ply here means how many singles have been twisted together. What you call 4 ply, we call fingering weight (size of yarns thickness). Ply isn't about our yarn weight (thinness or thickness of yarn), but about quantity of singles put together. When you learn to spin, you take your fiber and make a 'single'. You can then take two singles and ply (twist them) them to make a 2 ply. Taking the 2 ply and adding another single would be a 3 ply. Hope that helps. Your dk is 4 singles twisted together, thus a 4 ply dk here.
Ooh Gotland sheep 🌞🐑 sooo cute! I look forward to hearing how you get on with spinning. I'm also very intrigued about it. But I don't think I need a way to make more yarn yet, until I've made at least a small dent in my current stash haha
In September I went to a wool festival near me in Ohio, and I felt the same! While it was wonderful to get to feel all the yarn it was too over whelming! I I also should not have been trying to look for yarn for like 5 different projects... Next time I will likely just have one-two projects to shop for and then maybe make one wild purchase, to keep the over whelm down.
yes thats a good way to think about it.... i did have a long list but more so that i could "shop" to do list, once i had found a yarn i liked. not with the intention of ticking them all off as i wouldnt ever get through that list of knitting.
I enjoyed your impressions of Rhinebeck! I've always thought I'd go but I'm 1000 miles away and recently I've decided I'm going to support the festivals local to me. I also appreciated the real talk about budgets and costs. Some knitters gloss over that but it's a real factor. You did well with your purchases, I think. Enjoy!
Hi great fun to watch your take on the yarn festival. I am also in the USA but know that even a small show is just not something I would enjoy in person, but I love watching just everyday people who show us what caught their attention. I agree with your first comment that dk yarn is simply 4 plys spun together to produce a dk weight.
I've been having trouble finding patons kroy at Michaels lately. Which is a shame, because it's just about the only good yarn they carry. I'm glad you found some.
I did go and it was my first wool festival of any kind. I also went to Wool and Folk for a short time and though I saw first hand the 'situation' my experience there was tolerable. As for NY Sheep and Wool - soooo wonderful and soooo overwhelming all at the same time. Glad I experienced it, I did NEED to leave after just under 2 hours as I just could not be trusted. I went with some plans in mind, but the temptation for more was just too great! I left with some beautiful fibers and fond memories, and lots of photos of yarns I loved for reference, but don't feel the need to return next year. So glad you got to go and brought home some gorgeous fibers. Your fiber for spinning is fabulous. I bought some of the same colour/yarn from Sawkill but didn't realize it was a one ply (because of overwhelm) - was planning to knit a jumper but now, hmmm.
yes i get that about choosing something because you are overwhelmed then getting it home and realizing it wasnt the best choice! you could use it for a shawl (single ply is good for that) or hold it with a strand of something else? you could use it for a jumper but it would bobble quicker. i have just knit a ribbed vest in single ply and i am wondering if it will bobble tons or if the rib will help- dont know!
someone already commented on the US vs UK 4 ply/fingering weight/DK etc. Also $22 in Canadian is an okay price for me though I would rather pay $18 or $19 Canadian. $22 in US with the unbelievable exchange rate is way over priced for my budget. And I have never purchased $30 a skein yarn. I know that hand-dyed is often that and Hedgehog Fibres in Canada is at least $35 a skein but ouch!!! Arr -in-on-dack is how it is pronounced 😄. I use Google translate for those hard pronunciations. I LOVE the skein of that Golden Harvest colour!!! And I trust Fibretales, she speaks her mind and has really good ethics. You could check the release dates of the patterns if you feel really uncomfortable about it. And I am excited about the new house!! Congratulations! hope it comes through.
ah thanks- yes she does. i probably wont be casting that pattern on as im just not sure. urgh the yarn maths is real! ha. (and thank you about the house, still wishful thinking....)
4 ply is not the same meaning as UK 4 ply definition. you may want to watch the Woolly Thistle podcasts - Kelsey has a segment where she goes thru all of the weights vs plys; DK vs Fingering; etc. very worth watching, I am sorry I do not know which podcast it was but it wasn't that long ago
yes- i do know that to be honest- i think the jetlag/cold made my brain a little foggy and it just didn't click. here is it is sort of used interchangably- depending on whether its a mainstream mass produced yarn or more of a specialist breed specfic/construction specific etc type company. but thanks for the tip!
Hi, love your content. I think that it's about £12 for 100g so not expensive. Interested to know about the e spinner, I have two spinning wheels and spin from fleece, it's not difficult and when you start your spinning is so full of character , lovely for socks and hats etc.🧡
aha!! wish i had got some now if it was only £12- it was some lovely silk and wool blend that sounded lovely for socks. never mind!!! ha perhaps if i get totally stuck i will ask you...! essentially no idea what i am doing- need to watch some videos for sure. (and thank you :) )
There’s 16 ounces in a pound. 454 grams in a pound. I think yarn is more expensive in the U.S. Maybe it’s because we have fewer knitters. Maybe because most yarn isn’t made here. We have a gazillion hand dyers, though.
yeah i did wonder if it was broadly more expensive.... or i wanted all the special ones so it felt more expensive. i did also notice when i was looking things up for this video- some of the yarns i bought are cheaper online.....! from their own websites. is there a rhinebeck surcharge....!? hmmm
our dk skeins are 100g :) but this does make me realize why some patterns are listing meters/yards per not quite 100g- hadnt really thought it was a oz conversion!
I traveled from Maine to Rhinebeck, about 8 hours of driving one way. I also attended Wool & Folk (won’t be doing THAT again, but I was able to purchase some nice yarn there). I found Rhinebeck to be overwhelming and also had decision fatigue. Glad I went, was REALLY hoping to see you there to say hi. I went with a non-knitter friend and he was bored and ready to leave LONG before I was ready, so I ended up leaving long before I wanted to. Lesson learned! Anyway…glad you went, glad I went. Love the cardigan you are wearing thanks for putting the pattern in show notes. Also…I’m going to order some of that Earl Grey tea! ❤

Ooooh, I cannot wait to see your handcrafted e-spinner!
ha that might be a year or more away!
4 ply in the US means how many plys the yarn has :) It's DK weight. I was confused forever on the British 4 ply, 2 ply etc. Funny how we have to confuse things for ourselves LOL
I mean calling it 4ply when it doesnt have 4plys is confusing....!!!!!! it should be called SK (single knitting! aha!!)

to be honest- i did know that but i think i was having a tired moment !!! it makes a lot more sense now.. haha
That braid is beautiful! I should have guessed it was going to be deep and moody…I love it!!!
always here for the deep and moody!
Ooh Gotland sheep 🌞🐑 sooo cute!

ha if i am honest- that is sort of why i havent learnt yet!!!
I thoroughly enjoy your content. Thanks for the sprinkles of dry wit. 💗
Sprinkles of dry wit? no one has ever said that to me before! I get told on a regular basis that I have a total lack of humour...! (thank you)

thanks! there is something extra lovely about supporting locals too. i am glad i got to go but not too worried about missing out in the future :)

ah thanks. and i should have realized that about the 4ply...... i think i was just frazzled by dollars and ounces and pounds.... too many variables
I've been having trouble finding patons kroy at Michaels lately. Which is a shame, because it's just about the only good yarn they carry. I'm glad you found some.
yes... i didnt see anything else of interest to be honest!!! i will count myself lucky i got one pairs worth then

Beautiful episode! I wish I could have made it to Rhinebeck! Im only 3 hours North in Upstate NY!! Enjoy your new wool!
thanks, awww well there is always another year!

4oz. Is 113 grams, the weight of a dk/sport skein😊
