Annual race between brushcutter and scythe - honours go to the first to cut a stand of grass. This is the British Scythe Champion against an experienced agricultural worker with a three-tine brushcutter, working flat-out. Held at the Annual Green Fair and South West Scythe Festival in Somerset, UK, on 13th June, 2010. No trick photography here - he really is that fast. Panasonic GH1

This is not what a string trimmer was intended for. It's only meant for the places a mower can't get to. The lawn mower is the tool that replaced the scythe ,not the string trimmer.

There's a group of people bringing scythe technology to India. The small farms are still using Sickles to harvest. The farmers were *amazed* at the time saving and ease of use, talking about how much time it would save them for other chores or to do things with their children or families. Just really awesome, sharing something so archaic that can still make a difference in people's lives.
They're not just selling scythe to these folks, either. They're teaching them how to make their own, how to maintain them and the tall harvest attachment.

@@Rynewulf Scythes aren't as common as you may think. Lots of regions(usually rice harvesting regions, India, Southeast asia, Japan etc) didn't use Scythes historically(or it wasn't too common), perhaps due to the different harvesting requirements and conditions of rice. But then idk why scythe wasn't used in North India where wheat was usually grown. I'm more surprised that Brits (or other Europeans) never thought of introducing a tool like scythe especially considering they exported grains from here. I guess since lots of cheap labor was much more easily available here and work got done anyway, no one bothered.

@@Rynewulf > They sound uncontacted by the world or something
It's because you(and most non-indians in general) have not much idea about Indian history or the country in general and more often than not already have generally negative preconceptions of the country. Take the toilet guy above for example, the lack of toilets is(was) mostly a thing in the rural areas of some of the poorer and under developed northern states(generally more violent as well). Yet it doesn't stop people from making it an all India or mocking every Indian for it. It's like me looking at the Balkans and concluding that most of europe is similar to the Balkans.
Another example is simply this scythe thing. When people hear that 'Indians' don't use scythe traditionally, many reactions would mostly be about how 'du mb and primitive' these people are or something like that. Yet if the same people hear that some other country like Thailand or Japan don't use Scythe traditionally, the reaction wouldn't be half as negative as in the former case. Much of the cotton related machinery that was used in western world during colonial times was mechanized versions of the cotton machines used and developed in cotton industry of 'primitive India'. Funny how all this works.

The difference is the bloke with the brushcutter can keep that up for an 8 hour workday. It's not terribly visible here, but a harness carries the weight of the brushcutter, the handles are only for controlling the side to side motion. It requires very little effort to use. The bloke with the scythe looked to be slowing down towards the end of this small patch.
As for folks debating "string trimmer" vs. "weedeater" vs. "weed whacker"; this is a proper brushcutter. This is what it's made for. Lawn mowers don't do well in high growth like this and brushcutters are routinely used for areas like this where there may be stones, stumps, or uneven ground. The little thing with a single loop handle you use to trim your garden is a string trimmer, and is ironically more exhausting due to the lack of a harness to support the weight and the slouched posture required to hold it.

    • @johns3106
      @johns3106 3 месяца назад +24

Throughout history, MANY more people have spent a FULL workday using a scythe than a trimmer…if the scythe is good and sharp and the person knows what they are doing, it shouldn’t take much more effort to swing a scythe all day than it does to swing a trimmer back and forth all day…and it’s quiet! But, neither tool makes a day of laying down tall grass enjoyable!

if you're using the scythe correctly, the heel is resting on the ground supporting most of its weight. if the snath and handles are set properly for your height and arm length, and the blade is proper sharp, a person can absolutely swing one from sunup to sundown.
As another commenter already observed, the scythe was the primary tool for mowing crops for an awful goddamn long time. The advantage of the strimmer/brush-cutter is not its speed or endurance, but the very low skill floor to use it effectively, and the wider range of materials and terrain you can use it on.

However though I still prefer the gas brush cutter simply because it can cut through heavier stuff the scythe won't cut through. If you're only ever going to do grass and have good stamina and upper body strength the scythe will definitely work for you.

Only place a scythe doesn't do better is on STEEP ground, or with HEAVY brush, and with rocks & t posts it's easy to mess up the edge. But for most common cutting a scythe is far superior.

Scythes have the cool factor and less noise, but I think part of that extra time at the end could have been used to sharpen the scythe as that counts as part of the time it takes to use a scythe too. There's probably some maintenance on the brushcutter too but I bet it wouldn't be as much time as sharpening.

Seen these comps before, someone set up a much longer piece of grass to cut, the scythe cutter was knackered and it had to be sharpened to finish, he took many breaks and drank lots of water but didn’t give up, the brush cutter made it look easy, it was even funnier when the farmer in the next field starting cutting grass with his ride on mower. On flat ground like this, a scythe is a beautiful tool. However a brush cutter isn’t meant for this. It’s meant for brush, small spaces and uneven terrain. Throw in a few trees, a couple rocks and maybe a fence and the results would be completely different. A better comparison here would be either a push mower or a riding lawn mower, because those tools are meant to be used under these conditions.
The scythe is cheaper, lighter, doesn’t use gas and in this video the all around better tool (for this particular job).

Impressive! I used a scythe to cut tall grass and it takes practice, skill, and strength to get that kind of rhythm going. Grass is also tough on a blades edge, so they need frequent sharpening.
