- Program host Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Paul Simon pay tribute to Brazilian singer-songwriter-guitarist Milton Nascimento, with saxophonist Michael Brecker, bassist Ron Carter, and Brazilian singer-percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, for a TV performance broadcast 7-28-88. The BetaGems channel also has "Night Music 10-16-88 Paul Simon, Phoebe Snow, Yomo Toro, Eddie Palmieri," "Pete Townshend & Pat Metheny 10-22-90 TV performance," "Paul Simon 2-25-92 TV performance," "Pat Metheny and Gary Burton perform on late night TV in 1990," "Night Music 10-28-89 Todd Rundgren, Taj Mahal, Pat Metheny," and "Paul Simon 12-7-77 TV performance."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. Развлечения
Saudade 😢😢😢
Milton Nascimento is the greatest musician in the history of Brazil and one of the greatest in the entire history of world music. His melodies are divine, shivering. His voice is a gift from God. There is no one like him.
Paul Simon must have spent soo much time rehearsing this song that probably he still remember the lyrics.Brazilian speaking...he did great in Portuguese 😜
I had the great fortune to meet Mr. M.N backstage at radio city hall with my hubby emb.
I've been listening to Milton Nascimento since his 1969 album Courage on CTi/A&M Records. One of his most well-known songs (Bridges) is from that great album. Another very important album is Wayne Shorter's Native Dancer featuring Milton... epic! In this 1988 video it looks like Milton is playing Pat Metheny's now-famous Manzer nylon string guitar.
Bridges is a beautiful masterpiece.
Milton is beautiful! What a band, Pat is so awesome!
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🇧🇷 Certa feita, em algum lugar do mundo, uma artista disse que: "Se Deus ousasse cantar, cantaria com a voz musical do Milton Nascimento" ! 🇧🇷
Found Miltons music in mid 90s and he is great.
Nana RIP wish i had seen you live
Pat,Milton and Paul !
Fantástic combination!
Congratulartions!
🧔♂️😸😉👍🏻🎸🎤🎶✨️
Caramba! Como que a gente aguenta né?😂
What a backup band !!
Put Milton Nascimento in the title pleaaaaseee this is awesome
If I could go back to any time that I lived through it would be 1988. Shit was just getting ready to jump off into the current way of things.

Great!
Truth, Herbie! Sad that relatively few US listeners took your cue.
Eu costumo dizer que os brasileiros não tem noção do tamanho do Milton Nascimento lá fora , é a mesma coisa do Sepultura.
e... DEUS... dos humanos...disse que vai ali. Milton. Imortal. Orixá
OMG thanks so much for uploading this!!!

kind of silly to interrupt the song with pat's monologue... ahhh the 80s
I quibble a bit with Milton being “the greatest” Brazilian composer of his day. You’ve gotta say Gilberto Gil is right up there, and so is Caetano Veloso.
That’s because Milton was more successful on America and Europe during this time. Caetano and Gil are also tremendous musicians, but at this time they didn’t had the same impact they had during the 70’s (when Gil even played at the Isle of Wright Festival)
difficult to define.....it is that the post bossa nova generation, due to an alignment of the planets or divine intervention, led to the emergence of several musical geniuses of more or less the same age in Brazil, who today (or not) are defined between 70 to 80 years of age. Are they ; Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Elis Regina, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Edu Lobo, Hermeto Paschoal, Egberto Gismonti, Toninho Horta, Beto Guedes, Lô Borges, Hélio Delmiro, Baden Powell, Heraldo do Monte, Pepeu Gomes,Moraes Moreira, Alceu Valença, Nei Matogrosso, Gonzaguinha, and etc.....
We could add Luiz Gonzaga Jr and Chico Buarque to that list.
And Djavan, Belchior, Paulinho da Viola, Noel Rosa...? C'mon!
