Love Ron Carter and I'm a Huge Metheny fan as well! 50's/60's era Jazz is my passion, but Pat is a unique cat who gets the music on a deep level and thus fits in well with these great masters! Great conversation, really enjoyed this! Blessings to you both Ron & Pat!
The way that jazz musicians are connected to each other, personally and musically, across so many styles and age differences always amazes me. These interviews are a great gift to fans and musicians. Thanks for doing this.
Just here to give flowers to the amazing Ron Carter. I learned about Mr. Carter from a Tribe Called Quest song and it got me interested in jazz. I thank Mr. Carter for not being an elitist that looked down on hip-hop instead he poured into the genre with his amazing bass playing and allowed new generations to be aware of his music.
Thank you for your kind words :) When A Tribe Called Quest first asked me to record, I didn't know anything about hip-hop, so I asked my sons if they thought I should take the gig. They said yes, and I'm glad I listened.
Interresting conversation between to great musicians. Has been a big fan of Ron Carter and Jim Hall together. Did buy all Pat's recordings in the early days. As Ron says, is that melodic guitarists is their own orchestra. Also like to mention Ed Bickert who had his almost endless harmonic chord voicing. Bass can also be very melodic instrument.
This interview means so much. There's just one thing; he's said on two different interviews that the drummer is the leader of the band. There's the interview someone else mentioned, and there's the MJ1 interview. I get the feeling he said the bassist was the band leader to have a more favorable interview with you. Gotta love him, 'cause he aims to please.
When Pat mentioned Ron’s relationship to time he mentioned Ron and the way he keeps time on the bandstand. I thought about all the sessions and how he has to be in different places to play period. Great interview. Ron is the man.
I agree with the idea of music as being the means to an end; establishing and celebrating ideal social relations during performance as Christopher Small extensively wrote in his work. Thanks Ron Carter and Pat Matheny. Stay safe...
Wow, this is such a wonderful, brilliant conversation; Metheny is incredible, Mr. Carter is a fantastic living legend. So much experience, knowledge, playfulness, this was a joy!
I just clicked on cuz two of the musicians I admire most are talking, although I am a classical cellist I do dabble in Jazz and to hear that you guys like the cello is amazing. Thank you Ron Carter for such an intimate and frank conversation.
Oh yes! I knew he was a dog lover. I've had four Guide Dogs. My first Guide, Kiev and I went to his second "The First Circle" show here in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre. I knew "Forward March" was opening the show, so I waited until they marched past me, and what do you think I did? Well, I marched right behind them until that whistle-blow, did a 180 and dashed back to my seat near the back of the audience! I'm so glad I didn't get in trouble for that!
Two of my favorite musicians! Grew up as a drummer playing to Pat Metheny’s great music of the 70s and 80s, and now playing piano to all of his tunes…well, many of his tunes. Ron Carter remains a grandmaster on bass. Loved this interview!
Listening to the level of depth of this conversation is like being a tiny dot desperately clinging to a page. Its hard to come to terms with the breath and scope of these concepts, and at the same time I can't imagine a better use of ones energy, intellect, time and focus. What a gift.
It's strange, but I tear up, maybe in awe of these two people, as I relate to a lot of things they say. The part about music being the envelope struck a chord in me - NPI. Fantastic interview.
Dear Mr. Carter and dear Mr. Metheny! Thanks a lot for your wonderful, respectful and honest talk. It's a great pleasure to me to listen to your soulful experience and - that's evident - for all of your musical masterpieces! Best wishes from my heart! Lovely greetings from Leipzig, Germany.
Mr. Carter, Excellent interview!! Insightful questions for "not complicated bass player questions". Two music legends in a relaxed setting during a crazy moment in modern history. I see the mutual admiration and respect. Bromance at its best! Thank you both.
I enjoyed watching this sooo much. Although I hardly ever play my guitar anymore, Pat Metheny and Ron Carter changed my life. After seeing Pat's show in 80's in Warsaw, I got interested in jazz music and remined his bigest fan until now. Years after that, when I moved to NYC I studied with Ron at City College and my life was never the same. I've heard Pat say that Miles' Four and More (with Ron playing bass) inspired him to play Jazz. I remember listening to the same LP in Poland and being blown away by the new (to me sound) from a far awar land I did know I would be living in in the future. My mind wonders about what could have, should have, would have been...
Double quarter pounder. Good stuff. Quite different approaches. Ron has an ethernal child, playful soul and approaches a gig spontameously, much as a kid on his Lego construction. Fresh and with a slack. Always different.Pat on the other hand is like always inside the gig, restless, planned, always working on the crafting, not a detail left to luck which give us a different result. Maybe not as fresh but huge in conception. Love them both. Both are amazing and both are necessary. The world would be the saddest place without their music.
The ultimate reason for Mr Carter posing the question about their public performance layoff reveals itself after hearing a rather philosophical response!
"Music is just the envelope for the thing". I've listened to Metheny's music for 35 years, but have heard him interviewed only three times, odd thoughts he's uttered have stayed in my mind: "I'm extremely aware of the details of existence"... I now look forward to his interviews, he's a bit unusual:) I've listened to Ron Carter my entire adult life, some albums hundreds of times. I'll never meet him but I feel like I know him.It was a pleasure to hear these guys talk.
Seeing two of the best musicians of our lifetime chatting away is a beautiful site. If you play stand up bass and arent educated about Ron please go study him. Legend.
The level of respect , dedication and personal commitment that these people talk about music , and their own accomplishments in the field , brings a lot of inspiration for a guy like me. Thank you, mr. Ron Carter.

Great interview. Big fan of your playing. Looking forward to seeing Pat live on the upcoming tour. Seeing your long time band mate Herbie Hancock later in the month. Nice to have live music back again.
I've seen you Pat a few times, mostly with Lyle and Pat Metheny Group. Love your music, man. And Ron I go back even further, I saw you playing with George Benson in the late 70's.. Awesome musicians, both of you!

This is the first time I have heard Pat Metheny in an interview. I found this segment this morning. I've been a fan since ProjectX, also Offramp is one of my top 3 favorite jazz albums. I still believe when Miles Davis passed away the mantel of improvision was given to Pat Matheny. A special thanks to Ron Carter for this interview. I've never seen Pat Matheny in concert and may never see him. #Come to Orlando lol. Your still on my bucket list. 😁
