The Mystery of the Missing Mirrors on the LEGO Technic BMW M 1000 RR

  • LEGO recently revealed the gigantic 1:5 scale Technic replica of the BMW M 1000 RR motorcycle. It has tons of details, but there was one weird missing piece - it has no rear view mirrors. I asked you about it in my previous video, and now I'll try to solve this mystery myself! I also found some cool prototypes in the manual, you can see them at the end of the video ;)

I’ve been riding motorbikes for almost 10 years and love Lego too. When you take a motorbike to the race track you usually have to cover your mirrors with tape or take them off for safety reasons. Only street bikes generally have mirrors. I really don’t mind this Lego model without mirrors and in fact a lot of motorcyclists actually prefer the look.

Considering that the Ducati was released in 2020 and the Beemer is due in 2022, does that mean we may potentially see a Suzuki or Honda in 2024?

I guess it depends on the success of this set. If Lego sees good demand for motorcycle sets I'm sure they'll make more.

I probably doubt it, because it strongly depends who holds the license.

I feel like adding mirrors and a license plate wouldn't be impossible, perhaps some slight rebuilding of the front windhshield area would be needed to mount some small mirrors, and the tail plate shouldn't be too hard. I'm sure someone is/will be working on this.

I often ride my motorbike 🏍️ on track (my true one, not a Lego model 😅) and we remove mirrors, always.
As the purpose of this one is to be on track may justify their absence.

Seems like Lego has the bike set up “racetrack ready”. If you were bringing your 1000rr on the track, this is how it’d look at the starting line

  • @alexstudyvin4920
    @alexstudyvin4920 2 года назад +9

M1000RR is a street legal but track focused bike. BMW bikes as far as I know have a racetrack mode. And to engage the racetrack mode you have to remove the mirrors otherwise the bike won't let you turn on this mode. You have to remove mirrors to engage this mode because most of the racetracks won't allow you to go on track with the mirrors installed.

Well said Harry, would be nice to have the option. Manufacturers spend a great deal of time blending clunky mirrors into beautiful mudderbikes, some looking rather sharp with ears.

Oh, that's what the prints on the windshield are supposed to represent! I was wondering.
As you said, it absolutely should have been mentioned in the instructions why the mirrors and license plate holder are missing, and it also wasn't a good idea to have most of the photos of the real thing WITH those features. They really shoulda chosen other pictures.

As a bike fan, I prefer it without them, it's clearly a race bike first and a street bike second, and with the semi-slick tires it evokes the style of a Superstock class bike, which are like the Superbikes you in SBK or BSB, but are much closer to showroom stock, with limited modifications and semi-slick tires as opposed to the full slicks. It still would have been nice to include the mirrors and plates for those who wanted them, but personally I wouldn't have installed them anyway.

While it is a trivial issue in the current world situation, as a model collector (and occasional builder) I have to admit missing mirrors is a rather huge mistake on the design part. In fact, this replica, if it was blown up into real-world scale, would be illegal on the streets :)

  • @tclay1970

Track bikes dont have mirrors. Most sport bike enthusiasts dont like the way mirrors look and we often take the off in favor of more sleek handlebar mounted mirrors. Lego made the right choice here leaving the mirrors of the display piece. That's how BMW would display their track bikes.

This is a bit of a misnomer as the purpose built factory race bikes used in the World Superbike Championship are stilled labelled "RR." I think in this case the word "replica" is just being used as a synonym for "model."

Hi, well for street use it would need a side stand as a minimum and ideally a centre stand or punctures could be a bit tricky. Centre stands can be left out to save weight but they do help take static loads off the rear tyre when the bike is not in use. Maybe someone knows the details for this machine, I'm a tad too old to ride something like this now!

Another pointer to its track orientation is the very small lock to lock steering angle, which comes with a track setup. I failed to reset to street mode after a track day once, with disastrous consequences on the first roundabout I encountered on the ride home!!

Who cares, mirrors and plate holders are ugly on super-bikes anyway! I would have thought it was obvious that those are only for use on the road, indicators etc.. thus why they didn't include or why stop there might as well ask for helmet too? lol. So glad they didn't go there.
