There was a time Dave wouldn’t allow any questions about Kurt or Nirvana during early Foo Fighters interviews. But time heals all wounds, later said go ahead you can ask me any questions about Kurt. I don’t mind anymore.
I felt like the older Uncle when Kurt died. All my friends were “Publishing Zines and raging against machines” when I walked up to the hangout porch on a idle sunny afternoon and delivered the news. Looking back it was fandom mourning, not like their best friend died which is how they took it.
I said it. It was me.
It has to get tiring, but it is also inevitable if the interview is discussing Dave Grohl's entire career.

Wow. I love Dave’s straight forwardness. I respect the man respecting the way Cobain worked and I’m glad he got to become his own man in many ways.
For sure, and honestly, it has a lot to do with Howard's ability to interview people. He is one of the very very best interviewers ever. He asks all the deepest questions and in a way that the guests just feel comfortable answering. They don't feel like they are being grilled and interrogated, but that this guy (Stern) is super interested in what I have to say.
I'm not a Foos fan but to describe their success as ''a miracle'' is a bit much. They obviously worked really hard at it.

Astute observation. Stern is very good at getting to the heart of the matter. Junkies live in their own world, totally separate from non-junkies. What Dave went through only he knows. He came out of it stronger, and built something new from the ground up.
Howard made ME feel anxious. Wow, he's an intense interviewer.
I can tell from Taylor’s quiet , calm demeanour that he brought a lot to the band ; in the same way Dave brought a similar energy to Nirvana

It wasn’t the drugs. It was surrounding yourself/ marrying a bipolar crazy person who had no control and letting that influence you to chase a high. If kurt just chilled with a buzz and had discipline it wouldn’t have gone bad. But instead his life spun out and he was being self destructive & probably loved escaping through nodding off
Dave really handles these questions well, I didn’t like how they asked them They could have been so much more respectful.
People forget these Musicians and Comedians are very clever.

Stern had the balls to ask some great questions. I just wish he'd given Grohl the chance to elaborate a little more on them than what he did. Stern rapid fired a bunch of good questions in a row.

You can tell even today when Kurt died that Krist changed forever. It's like losing your other half and both Krist and Kurt were fighting at the airport for Kurt to get rehab. That death shocked Krist into being sober because when you saw him in the 94 MTV music awards he looked like a completely different person.

Funnily enough one of the things that got me loving music again after Kurt's death was the foo fighters first album which Dave did pretty much on his own. Dave is still my favourite living rock star to this day

Have to give Howard props...he asks the questions we want to know, and does it in a way that the guest answers them truthfully.
Howard has a way of asking the right questions and getting good solid answers; his technique is flawless...... he makes his guests feel at ease, cracks some jokes..... and asks the hard hitting questions. For all his crass and stupid sexist s**t in the past.... he’s a genius at interviewing people.

I think because he's truly interested. People here are complaining that he is firing off questions, but I see it more like the questions are popping up in his head and he's just letting go.

If that's true I didn't necessarily get that from this clip. It'd be nice if Howard gave him some time to give an honest, fleshed-out answer. I thought the questions were great, and as a long-time fan definitely some I've always wondered, but damn let him finish a thought before you move on.

*Edit, just randomly rewatched this. I forgot to mention that in interviews the band said that Dave also came up with the drum beat and riff for Scentless Apprentice.
Things happened the way they happened and we should just be thankful we got some much amazing music from both these bands. Kurt and Dave will both go down has rock legends for all the ages to come

I watch this from time to time but i still can't stop smiling whenever i see Taylor waiting and listening to the story like a fan like most of us
Dave Grohl is easily one of my favorite musicians simply based on his down to earth honest personality. Oh and he’s a beast!!!
you can see how hard it is on him just to talk about this. what a harsh life these guys had. we sit there and think "ye but his famous and cool and rich", but you that sits there, not sure you had the pain these guys held together. being in a band trying to make it, being friends with a deep connection, actually making it, then everything crashes, your friend dies, and then build yourself again. never to really recover. as we can see from the way he speaks about this. and the fact that he really never took the drum set again. just to painful emotionally. it could be even a really sad thing. congrats to Dave on not doing drugs and coming out of it.
You're being a little over sympathetic. Dave got over it when the Foo's got big real quick and got behind the drums on his first record and then with Queens of the Stone Age. You sound like all these little girls that read too much into something that has been misconstrued for so long. Kurt and Dave were more like business partners than they were friends. Kurt didn't really trust Dave by 93 in my opinion. Kurt was going to fire Dave from what I heard.

Nah guys, it's been over 25 years and so much (good) has happened/changed since then. He has moved on, he can talk about it. It's like being shot and surviving or something. Everybody else thinks it's a super big deal because they never been there, but you live it, heal, move forward with life. Not forget, just carry on and indeed get over it, especially as time and other life events have come and gone.

Exactly a lot of interviewers act freindly and nice but secretly trying to ask the question.
Love him or hate him. Howard doesn’t fuck around when it comes to interviewing.
Thats why he became the biggest radio jockey ever. Some people hate him for it because it can come across as insensitive or inappropriate but he makes you talk about the interesting stuff that no other interviewer can get u to.
He'll hammer you about your dad who left you and the impact it had or an affair you had with another celebrity etc and will get you to say more about it than you have in the previous 20 years.
@ Andrew Audet Yes, you could say there is a distinct difference between Howard and people like Jimmy Fallon it's pretty obvious. If anyone out there can't figure out who would be the better interviewer between those two I just mentioned then they have severe mental problems!

You gotta hand it to krist and dave though, 24 and 27-ish yrs old at that time, played in nirvana for 3yrs. Never had to work a job ever again.
If you think touring isn't as intensive as a job...
Rick D Nirvana formed in ‘87 and disbanded with Kurt’s death in ‘94, so Krist was in the band for 7 years. Dave joined around 1991, so for him it was closer to 3 years, but he did take on another “job” fronting the Foo Fighters, so not entirely true, but I get what you were saying: Nirvana kicked ass and those guys can coast through the rest of their lives because of it.
I bet, especially Krist, would give it all away just to have Kurt back. Dunno but Dave though 😂😂😂
Making and playing music is WORK and it's harder than most JOBS especially during the 90s when social media havent existed yet. It takes a LOT of time and effort to be really good at your instrument and just like athletes, musicians need to practice regularly to maintain a certain level.
Okay but Howard is such a good interviewer. I believe he asked the questions fast because that's how you get a natural response, you don't let the other person think of a fake or mild response but an honest, raw response. As an interviewer, he's smart and quick, I like him.

Hello Howard Stern Iam from australia i have huge respect for Howard Stern. This is heartbreaking iam a singer songwriter myself but I wanna be a solo artist. My dream is to live in. New York city i love Howard I saw him on Jerry Seinfeld comedians in cars getting coffee and he opened up about his father and it broke my heart cause I went through domestic violence from my own father
With those questions, I want to know too. But I think it's always second to the end of the world for Howard. Give a damn time for the man to answer!

God I love Howard stern ! I remember the first time I was introduced to him was in 2001 or 02 but it was when he was E and crazy stuff was happening ha talented man.

I have come to realize that I have a finite amount of minutes on this earth while I'm still young enough to appreciate things like walking and breathing. I think I don't wanna waste any more of those minutes listening to Dave Grohl talk about his days in Nirvana over 25 years ago.
Listening this inverview with some Nirvana on the background, makes it so much better.
