Dr NeneAs we get older we tend to become more lethargic and spent time on couches. The more it gets pressed there less becomes the urge to go. I see people who move a lot get their bowels moving too. I have my 84 year old mother who is a cardiac patient. She moves a lot 10 k steps a day lifts 60 pounds weights and does yoga She taught me all good things. Keep moving your body. It’s not meant to sit down.

Thanks for Dr Nene for sharing essential information about constipation. Constipation actually is a major problem. Personally I deal with constipation by drinking 3 to 4 glasses of warm water in the morning and eating foods rich in fibres during each meals times. To prevent from constipation I eventually drink 2 to 3 glasses of water 1 hour before each meal. Yoga physical exercises and breathing exercises have also helped spontaneously.

Thanks Dr. Nene for enlightening the audience on this very difficult but important topic. I use to suffer from this but in the last I’d say about six years …..one thing I follow …..even before I step out of bed ….I drink about 24 oz of water to wake up my internal organs ……and not to mention I eat green leafy salad for at least one meal on a daily basis. My salad includes a mixture of salad leaves, cucumber, blueberries, one other piece of fruit …..and I use only fresh squeezed lemon juice as dressing. This has really helped as I stepped into my 50’s.
    Thanks for your time!!

Great video Dr Nene! I have been suffering from constipation since my childhood. Drinking couple of glasses of warm water at bed time and in the morning helped me a lot. I always try to stay away from the medicines even though my family is full of doctors. Home remedies are always the best!

I read between the lines and understand what you know truly - the reason you stay away from “medicine” is *because* of the many doctors in your family. not, “even though my family is full of doctors,” ❤

Wonderful video again from Dr.Nene.... I make it a point now to watch them as a duty and although I am lazy to type but am provoked to do now...
I am 47 years old. About 6 years ago, I had a surgery for Diverticulitis with Abscess and after that I had some trouble with bowel movement. Having high blood pressure and being Type II Diabetic did not help either and moreover originally coming from Hyderabad, South India, where we are used to eating mostly rice with meat curries made the matters worse. I became severely constipated and morbidly obese...having gained weight to 122 kg's at one time.
But things changed for the better, due to my dietician and my surgeon (who was as caring and empathic like Dr.Nene) motivated me to take care of myself and to get more fiber in my diet and drink at least 2 liters of water daily and to walk. This did wonders to my health. I lost almost 10 kg's in 12 weeks ! And now I always eat a bowl of salad with all my meals and drink about 8 glasses of water. I have no trouble going to toilet on a daily basis in the mornings. Getting an 8 hour restful sleep also helps in bowel movement. I think it really does - at least for me.
I work in IT industry and mostly sit in front of laptop all day and that does not help at all. Therefore now, I also go out for a walk and stopped living a sedentary lifestyle, although COVID did not help at all - but thankfully all that is in past now. Active lifestyle overall definitely helps in healthy bowel movement.
Dr.Nene, you take out time to do these amazing videos for which I am truly very grateful and greetings from Montreal, Canada. You have lots of fans here Dr.Nene - I certainly am one of them !
Have a nice rest of the day and weekend and Happy Independence day on July 4rth. We have Canada day here today !!

Thanks Dr. Nene for sharing this. I moved from the traditional Indian toilet (pic shown in the clip) to the Western Commode due to family pressure decades ago, but as you stated, I always found clearing my bowels in the Indian one was far easier and seemed more natural. Many other species too squat to clear their bowels. In the early days of WC in India, many of my elderly relatives living in the rural hinterland would avoid visiting us in the cities just to avoid having to use the WC. I bet most Indians have adopted the WC only because it looks more stylish or sleek compared to the Indian toilet, though the latter is known to be far more effective in clearing the bowels naturally. Somehow, even today I feel clearing my bowels in a WC feels as if I am defecating on a chair (psychological block, I guess) 🙂
As you mentioned, the best way to avoid constipation is to add more fibre in the diet. Even using something like Isabgol over long time isn't good for the body. Certain medications for chronic ailments like diabetes too cause constipation.

I was once constipated for 9 days after giving birth to my son. i didn’t tell anyone as i was embarrassed. Then i kept having warm milk fiber apples in the hope that i will be able to poop. so on the 9th day it happened. i was the only adult in the house with my 7 year old, 5 year old and the new born baby. i remember i had to do the squart position and by the time i was relived there was blood everrrrry where. i almost passed out seeing the blood alone. that was perhaps the hardest day of my life even harder than the three natural births i had been through. The problem is it gave me a pile. wanted to ask you should i tell my doctor about it and have it removed? i’m in California now where we can talk about such things without embarrassment earlier i was i. pakistan. also and i’m 45 years old now. Your advise will be HIGHLY HIGHLY APPRECIATED. thanks Sylvia

Here is how you deal with constipation. 1st, this will sound counterproductive but it works. DO NOT drink liquids of any kind when eating food. Drink liquids 30 minutes before eating so that when you do eat the digestive juices that break down food are not diluted while eating. That will result in a more maliable chime or food breakdown. 2nd, eat avocado in every meal as well as lettuce or broccoli or spinach. That is perfect for softening or pushing food along the intestines. 3rd, buy Bifitus complex tablets. That is comprised of friendly bacteria which keep your intestines healthy and a must for everyone. Keep the Bifitus pills refrigerated once you open the bottle. 4th, stay away from everything that slows down the metabolism and can hurt your immune system such as alcohol, smoking or consuming legal or illegal substances that make you sleepy or numb you such as sleeping pills like Ambien, artificial foods or coloring, dairy food which produces a wrong culture for many, coffee, sugar which creates havoc to your body, saturated meat fats mainly the skin of meat, spicy or overly acidic food which can throw your PH balance off, candy, and food made with flour such as pizza, bread, cakes and pasta. Now you see why so many are unhealthy or constipated or can't sleep because many of you are eating the wrong foods mentioned here including processed food such as salami, bologna and fast food like burgers. Here is what to eat. Fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes steamed at low heat so the nutrients are not killed, chicken (no skin on it), 5 glasses water (bottled or filtered) per day, fish like wild salmon, crab and cod fish. Cashew nuts, walnuts which are the best for the heart while lowering cholesterol, brown rice and for a snack eat bananas, orange, or apple with the skin. Doctors will not tell you all the information I just gave you because they need to make money off you. Hopefully this doctor will not delete this comment so that you all can learn from my advice. I learned my medical information by listening to nutritionist and scientist Gary Null who still does a show. Google him. I'm an American from New York City. Stay healthy all. You can if you try.

I had mild constipation problem since childhood but later I realised there was nothing wrong with my digestive system or excretory system. The problem was with my diet. I used eat food which has no water content. So I was suffering with anal fissure. I took laxatives when it was high and started taking yoghurt in my meal with lots of lettuce or salads like Carrots Cucumber Beetroot. Now I don't have any problem.

I got constipated after surgery and attempted manual evacuation with a gloved finger and lubricant. I was unsuccessful and my rectum has beet hurting (dull, pressure pain) all day. So much so that it is very uncomfortable to sit in a chair. Don't try it. On the other hand, why is there no follow-up care after surgery? i was left on my own. For the first three days, I suffered urinary retention (not full, but scary). That led me to cut down on the fluids that would have perhaps prevented constipation. I did have one full bowel movement before constipation set in. Notifying the nurse about constipation and pain, I was told to try a stool softener. But what if it doesn't work and only increases the pain? I've been experiencing paradoxical constipation too by the way. along with foul-smelling flatulence. My surgical site (skin on my back) hardly hurts at all. My plumbing has made life miserable though.

a lot of people discount the idea of probiotics. alongwith fibre and water healthy gut bacteria too i believe is important. I have Jain friends and they dont ferment any food for fear of "Destroying" live organisms while cooking them. and ive seen most of them complain of constipation once in a while. some amount of fermented food in ones diet is really important. simple foods in India like Idli, dosa, dhokla or western foods like Sauerkraut are good probiotics. For people who want a very easy recipe for probiotics is take a bowl of cooked rice add about 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and a little water to this rice. mix it well and leave it overnite on your countertop. morning add some more plain water and just a pinch of salt to this to make it a little runny and drink it. it works like magic.

I have been suffering from PCOS since 2015 and inspite of regular treatments - my list of health issues have increased manifold ranging from PCOS , Clinical depression, Anxiety , Excessive weight gain ,conspitation and now allergic asthma .I even transitioned into Veganism but even that is of no avail.
Doctors generally discuss PCOS wrt only conception . However, many women and even girls at a younger age are suffering from it.Tbh PCOS needs to be discussed in a more broader sense wrt Mental health, diabetes, etc.

Exercise for 20 - 30 minutes per day, take Miralax once every three days, and try to eat some fresh fruit every day - as an 89 year old senior I got my constipation under control. Any time I feel there is something there I immediately go to the toilet. Oh yes, some prunes every day!

Thank you Dr. Nene...appreciate your talk greatly...I started taking castor oil few drops only each day n it has brought down my constipation..mix in little bit of tea n drink up! I also rub castor oil in my navel..much less constipation..but fibre rich foods best...also eating dried figs soaked overnight n prunes eating first thing in morning drinkup soaked water quite helpful...adjust according to your bowel movement...❤

Dear Dr Nene...my mom has undergone a coliostomy surgery due to a colon mass that was blocking her stools. Please discuss on this as it appears to be less known as opposed to a cardiac surgery.

I think fasting also works wonders for resolving this issue.

Have not watched just yet but I'll throw in what has helped me significantly over the last weeks, I simply started eating several prunes a day and also about 4 ounces of prune juice along with 1 ounce of QUALITY Californian extra virgin olive oil (supposedly there is a lot of bad olive oil on the market made with crappy olives) ,,,,anyway this has helped a LOT but still not totally satisfied AND this does create a lot of gas (farting) ...my constipation is life long but these days pain meds makes it even worse
