Yeah , right. That is the new cliche that gets circulated about every movie. How could Meryl have done it in one take with all those cuts, and when you can see the lighting change? The same story is told about Ann Hathaway's "I Dreamed A Dream" in the Les Miz movie.
@@Themanwhocameback2 Anne Hathaway didn't do it in one take, she did several. The director used the very first one she did, as he thought it was the best. Perhaps that's where the confusion arose?

Fun fact: 90% of what you hear her singing was LIVE. Only some parts are mixed with the studio version! AND she did this in ONE take. Meryl Streep, you're the best!
What did we do to deserve someone as talented and captivating as Meryl Streep? She made this movie, and this is the scene that brings all the goosebumps and wets every eye in the house
She made the movie, because she was the movie. The movie was meant to center around sophie, but its obvious that it was more about donna. That's why so many of us who saw the trailer for the second movie are disappointed, she may not be in it.
Alexandra Geralis Every human worth their salt is worth everything and yet there are some humans that stand above the rest for something totally unique about their gifts they bring to the world and are memorialised in their legacy.
This is another proof why Streep is the best actress. She acts while singing. All great performers do so. With one look she gives the whole emotion, with a seconds pause she can take it back. She is the devil of all actresses
Fun fact- all of Meryl's songs were recorded live. Unfortunately they couldn't use the live audio here cuz the waves were too loud but all the other scenes were. Indeed she is 💯💯
meanwhile Pierce Brosnan is told "just stand there and look uncomfortable." poor guy, he isn't an awful actor but nobody can match Meryl Streep and he wasn't given anything to do!
Me too! I think it shows how emotional she is about everything that happened between the two of them. How in those three little words she shows everything.
When I first experienced her singing this song in the theatre, I couldn't even take a breath. She is acting as well as singing and doing both so beautifully. We are so lucky to have her and her remarkable talent to enjoy. Meryl is truly a winner as a human being and as an actress. She's beautiful inside and out!
gracienr I remember seeing this film and the theatre version in Australia.I saw an interview with David Latterman whilst watching this film in Filey last year. So sad 😭 this song reminds me of that interview- and the storyline is so believable- I bet many people can relate to this 😢🙏🏻🌍🙇🏻♀️🙇🏽♂️
Meryl owned both films. This and My Love, My Life made both their respective movies. It's a cliche to say "No one could've been better for that role", but in this case it's just the truth. Meryl is Donna and Donna is Meryl. The distinction between role and actor is nearly non-existent for the audience and that proves the brilliance of Meryl.
I remember I watched this movie and was caught so off guard by this song. There is so much feeling in every line, even as she sings each note perfectly. It’s honestly the best part of the movie and utterly brilliant acting. She absolutely nailed it. This song is the one that really stood out for me.
She sang that with so much passion for the first in all the years i loved that song...i finally heard all the word..."THE GOD'S ROLL THE DICE THEIR MINDS COLD AS ICE"
With that acting!!! the cutting palm slicing the air... but a tremble of the fingers an instant duration... unbelievable how it holds two vast emotions in a gesture.
"I don't want to talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand. I apologize, If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense, No self-confidence. But you see The winner takes it all." It made me cry too .. it 's how she sing it with deep feelings :(

I LOVE this movie, and I love Meryl and Pierce together. Meryl Streep is stunning and beautiful, like others have said this scene takes your breath away. Just WOW.
I like both versions a lot, but take into account that Streep is faking/performing her heartache here because it's a movie and she's allowed to cry when she's singing -the woman in ABBA, I always forget the name, the blonde one, wrote this song because the husband that she was forced to perform it with cheated on her and divorced her in real life, and she still had to perform to the level expected of a performer in a record. So... yeah both versions tug a lot at my heartstrings

The fact this wasn’t done in a recording studio is MADD!!
Adam Walls true, there are so few musicals I know of that have the actors actually sing on location when the location is outside this much
Ik that just proves how talented meryl is
It was recorded in a Stockholm studio. Benny Anderson called Streep "a miracle" as she finished it in one take.
😘😘👌👌
she actually wanted it to be done live

About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play
The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny
I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules
The gods may throw the dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain
But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed
The judges will decide
The likes of me abide

Always staying low

A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
