The three characters were my favorite in the entire show, until Ecbert got with Judith, his son’s wife, Ragnar got into drugs, and Athelstan got killed by Floki. Their actors are all amazing as well and portrayed their character’s emotions well

Athlestan was very special to him and king ecbert they both yearned and lust for him for he was a great man and a legend who tried to unite both kingdoms together
Floki betraying Ragnar and killing Athelstan, Rollo betraying Ragnar once again. He just couldn’t take the betrayals from everyone anymore and left. And then returned ready to die.
Even ragnar said "We will never meet agad" He even accept baptisms just to enter heaven to see athelstan but heaven rejected him and thats all he accepted his faith and go to Valhalla
Although its probably impossible. I'd like to believe Ragnar was able to visit Athelstan in heaven. He may have been Pagan but he did recognise Christianity and accepted Athelstan had his own God.

Never understood what this Athelstan did to be loved SO MUCH by ragnar and hecbert. I think it's too much for a simple guy that didn't do anything special
I haven't watched the full show, but I'm pretty sure, Ragnar was curious about Athelstan's religion? I guess, they shared simillar interest of learning new things, so they bonded over sharing stuff about their cultures, eventually becoming close friends. Ragnar seemed to also trust Athelstan more than anything in the end. That's just how friendships go, it just clicks with some people and then you can't imagine them not being in your life

I recently bought Athelstan's cross replica and I wear it everyday, It reminds me of this beautiful friendship between a Christian and a Viking
