      I agree. I don't even think Rollo's betrayal or Lagertha leaving him had that much of an effect compared to when Athelstan died. I'm not saying those didn't lead to Ragnar's downfall because of course they attributed to it. But there was always something deeper about his relationship with Athelstan and when he was gone, Ragnar just seemed more lost and miserable than ever. In a way, Athelstan was the true light in Ragnar's life. Their religious differences in fact bonded them more closely and they learned so much from each other to the point they saw similarities in each other's gods and customs. Ragnar's final speech to him was honestly so sad. You can just feel the agonizing pain of his loss through his words. Besides Lagertha, it was obvious Ragnar truly loved Athelstan.

    • @TheFuneralPyre
      @TheFuneralPyre 7 лет назад +154

      Athelstan and Ragnar weren't gay lovers meant to be together if that's what youre getting at. It wasn't "true love". I know it's hard for modern minds to comprehend but 2 men can love each other and not be gay. In those days relationships were so much more meaningful and bonds between people were extremely important. Ragnar and Athelstan's relationship was more of a spiritual and brotherly bond more than lovers. In the end Ragnar even says that Athelstan was a brother to him sort of insinuating that he was more so than Rollo.

    • @magiv4205
      @magiv4205 7 лет назад +168

      TheFuneralPyre Maybe they weren't lovers, but their bond defnitely went way beyond any other relationship any of them ever had. In the end, Ragnar gave up his gods, everyone he loved and who loved him, Lagertha, his whole family. He literally gave up Valhalla just to share a heaven with Athelstan because he couldn’t bear to be separated from him. If that's not telling, I don't know what is. Two people don't need to kiss or fuck to show that they love eachother, and those two have proved the depth of their bond over and over again. If you don’t think that, that's fine with me, but I'm still convinced that even in the afterlife they fought to be together, lovers or not.

I got tired of being told that an endless stream of gore, violence, actors stuffing their genitals into a bag and crawling between another willing performer is "quality entertainment" instead of the violent soft core porn it is. Or that images of decapitation, strangulation, mutilation and anything in between accompanied by a close up view of a performers pubic hair or butt crack so I may have some familiarity with where their next load of shit will be exiting, to be worth the price of a ticket or a subscription. Thank you.

    Athlestan truly loved ragnar, and admired him above that (i believe) to the point where he shifted his fate to fit what ragnar wanted, he lived the life of a warrior but their bond was kinda rusty towards the end cause Ragnar was a savage, he didnt know another life but the one that he had (even tho i also believe that ragnar wanted a different fate for himself) when athlestan finally knew who he was, the man he wanted to be, he wanted to share that with Ragnar but it was difficult, they werent in the same page, and they both couldve... help each other grow, but then athlestan was killed and with that, ragnars first glance of a different life, thats why his character descent from there.
    I dont know if the writers intended this to be platonic, or romantic and honestly i dont care.
    But the portrayal of two souls, brought up differently, understanding each other to the core, without words, by pure instinct ... was just brilliant.
    I wish they wouldve had a happy ending.

    As much as everyone heaped anger on Floki, he, too, loved Ragnar and did what he did bcuz he truly believed Athelstan wasn’t good for Ragnar, whether rightly or wrongly. Ragnar punished him physically but even worse emotionally. When Ragnar finally forgave Floki, I was glad, bcuz Floki’s Love was also true. Ragnar was blessed to have such friendships, and he himself was magnetic and charismatic to have inspired such loyalty.

      I think he killed Athelstan because he was jealous, although he would never admit it out loud. He did love Ragnar and maybe he really thought he was doing the right thing but that doesn't change the fact that he intentionally let Ragnar suffer, which led to his depression and later drove him into madness. In my opinion, Floki was incredibly selfish. But well, that's just my opinion :D

    • @goncalofernandes1432
      @goncalofernandes1432 3 года назад

      @@martina-dd6vb Floki wasn't selfish at all. If he was selfish he wouldn't kill Athelstan, he thought he was saving and helping he's best friend by killing the priest. Simple as that

    What an incredibly artistic video. I cried through the whole of it. When Athelstan died, I stopped watching the show at first. The only reason I picked up on it again was due to people telling me that Athelstan even in death kept being relevant to the show. They were right but it wasn't enough honestly. Athelstan and Ragnar elevated each other so much that after this important story was over with one of them being dead the show - at least to me - could never fill that loss again and dropped in quality immediatly. When Ragnar died as well I only kept watching due to the fact that I am a history buff and found some storylines ok but sadly Vikings became a predictable revenge domino effect story that kept repeating this trope over and over again.... Ragnar and Athelstan stood out in all that.

    It was the symbol Athelstan had in the Vikings which makes him so awe inspiring. Vikings a group so native , brute and territorial and their leader Ragnar finding a friend in a person outside of his community . It made him think outside of even what his gods thought , made him question what gods wanted . He helped transform Ragnar made him realise acceptance and empathy a true symbol of change in the Viking way of thinking , a trailblazer many would say .
