  • Here is a short 30 minute video with some of the action I caught (not much) over the past few days at Marathon, Ontario, Canada.
After such a beautiful day " • Jan 11, 2024 ~ CPKC tr... " on Thursday the weather took a turn for the worst, after all it is winter in Canada! We have been spoiled this year with El Nino with little snow and many days above freezing along Lake Superior. On Friday the 12th I caught a meet first thing with 118 & 113 before a storm moved into the region bringing with it our first taste of cold weather. We are just on the edge of a massive polar vortex which is effecting much central North America and railway operations on both CN & CP.
I didn't venture far this week, here are a few trains I caught.
CPKC Marathon - MP 61.3 CPKC Heron Bay Subdivision ~ Marathon, Ontario, Canada

9:31 Night shot of CPKC 421-12 knocking down the light
11:31 Blizzard as CPKC 101-12 passes

When I started at the CPR in the late 70's it was very common in cold winter conditions to have trains leave Toronto or Montreal with 90 or so cars and by the time they arrived in Thunder Bay to be reduced to about 60 cars. Once those trains reached the extremely cold air around Chapleau they were no longer able to maintain the required air pressure on the tail-end of the train and off would come about 30 cars.
Sometimes the trains made it to Thunder Bay with 90 cars but couldn't get the air pressure back up after having cars switched on or off and an outgoing brake test performed. In that case, the train would be reduced in T.Bay. The cars that were taken off enroute were run as their own train - usually with 2 locomotives on the headend - and were called 'overflow' trains. They were usually short, fast trains.
It used to get VERY busy in this region - and on the prairies - whenever we experienced a cold snap such as we are now experiencing because you would sometimes have almost as many overflow or short trains running as you had regular or long trains.
