CPKC weed spray train, dimensional windmill move, and intermodals at Marathon, Ontario, Canada

In late May I caught a few trains around Marathon including CPKC Railway's weed spray train and a dimensional windmill move between BNSF-Denver, CO (CPKC St Paul, MN) and Searsport, ME routed via Winnipeg. They would take the siding at Marathon having a restricted meet with 113 the rookie RTC wasn't quite sure to handle this from times past. May, 2024 ~CPKC Marathon - MP 61.3 Heron Bay Subdivis...

M30631 16 looked quite a bit different when I finally saw it on May 17 in Lac Baker NB. 8947 was moved up to join 8917 on the headend and 8950 was added for a third unit for a now 110 car train. I used to be a technician with CN Telecommunications and in the mid 70s was based in Capreol. In my work I traveled extensively around the province and worked out of North Bay, Capreol, Hornepayne, Geraldton, Armstrong, Hearst, Kapuskasing, Guelph and Stratford. On one occasion, when I was in Geraldton, I had to drive to Hillsport. I drove on Hwy 11, past Long Lac and then took logging roads down through Caramat to Hillsport. Living and working up north was quite an experience and I did a lot of traveling on trains, often freights.

    the intro to this video is one of the best visuals I can remember ever seeing.. Amazing if it was edited in some way on your part. Black/White for the most part, but the colors of the train's cargo containers are eye-catching in ways I can't remember seeing before.... The buildings that do have some color, do so in a way so slight they are still a background, and add a texture-like depth similar to the way larger discolored , course pieces of gravel may add to beach pictures of mostly smooth sand.

    Some of these CN intermodals that you caught had WAY too many platforms - up to 187 - for the power they had on them. At Newtonville Road, the one with 2 units and 186 platforms was down to 30mph going up that grade. Yikes! A good rule of thumb that my dad used to use for such trains was a maximum of 25 cars for each 3000hp 6-axle unit that you had. Anything more than that was going to affect your ability to make your running time over the sub. The CPR had a self-imposed rule of no more than 60 autoracks for the three 3000hp 6-axle units on their 'Pacific Auto Train' (PAT) that ran daily from Toronto to Vancouver. Any more than 60 and they would supply a 4th unit to that train. That CN auto train had 101 racks for the 2 units - equivalent hp to 3 SD-40s. I feel sorry for these CN train crews working on these underpowered 'fast freights'!

    • @foamer88
      @foamer88 3 месяца назад

      CN operates very long intermodals on this section with 120, 121, 148 and 149 often near 200 platforms.

    the RDC-2 would have been 6219 not 6215. 6215 was retired over 10 years ago and is now owned by the VHA and is stored at the VIA TMC in Toronto, also VIA 185 is not in anyway shape or form a CP train, it is not operated by CP and is not a CP train, not sure why you had it listed as a CP train.

    • @foamer88
      @foamer88 4 месяца назад

    There are some really interesting views here. Two things that I spotted are that they are still using RDC's. Those are almost museum pieces. In the video, the first car was RDC-2 and the second was RDC-3. Passengers would not have that much baggage, and so they are moving some cargo as well. Second is that the intermodal trains run cross country. The fact that the trains run cross country does not mean that the containers do. Do they load and unload containers at intermediate points? The last night train seemed to be moving a light rail train somewhere.

    • @filipsimpson3720
      @filipsimpson3720 3 месяца назад

      The budd cars are Via 185 / 186. Passengers would actually have more baggage as it makes whistle stops, for those canoeing, hiking, camping up north - see TVO tripping the 185. The light rail is a Toronto streetcar.
