    I think the aloe looking plant is agave. The paddle catcus looking plant is prickly pear. Dispatch is hilarious! Love watching all of you❤💛💚

    You, like RR, seem very happy and content to be on trail and that makes me happy.
    Loved all of the scenery we saw in this one. I can but imagine what it looks like in person.
    Thank you for taking us along.

    Love seeing yours and Roadrunner's videos. I hope you don't let others in the group get in the way of your plans, like what happened on the AT. Thanks for sharing

    Nothing like jamming your foot into frozen shoes and hiking until they thaw out so you can tie the laces…worst moment of the day except for when you open the valve on your pad 💨

    So impressive you are creating and uploading these videos WHILE hiking 15-20 miles a day!
    Do you mind adding dates to the descriptions?

      I’d have to adjust my system a bit to include dates. In the meantime, Day 1 was April 2.

    that 'looks like aloe' is also the Yucca plant... without the tall stem and blossom, which die off and oft get knocked off til next year's bloom stem grows.

  • @DovieRuthAuthor

    The plants with the pointy leaves are agave plants. The points can go through your shoes.
    The plant with the tall stalk and flowers is a yucca. (Pronounced YUCK uh. It’s the state flower of New Mexico.

  • @JamesOfEarth
    @JamesOfEarth 9 месяцев назад +1

    The yucca petals are edible raw or cooked. Other parts of the plant are too, but tough to get/process.

    another guy on the PCT this year Plant Papa, said the yucca are edible. He know all the plants ect

    North American Aloe Vera plant .. DIFFERENT from the central Ameican version (that you can make an eatable 'potion' from the old mexican ladies)
    North American one will cause an upset stomach if you ingest it .. Both work great as a topical solution for burns
    .
    CHOLLA .. meant to be an all caps .. because you often find it connected to the back of your ankle
    .
    Beaver Tail Cactus ... kinda gray .. large wide flat beaver tail shape ... the other type (more green) smaller cactus leaves is Prickly Pear Cactus .. you can see red\yellow apples growing on as fruit .. (Taste Fantastic!) .. but so many little needles i just can't get myself to eat them anymore

    Do not ever touch the cholla cactus (choya) with anything (finger, boot, etc). They have microscopic hooks and the cactus balls will detach from the plant while hanging on to what touched them. AVOID. The visibility is amazing!

    You could try putting your shoes under your sleeping pad to keep them from freezing. Either under your head kinda like a pillow, or under your knees or feet, whichever likes to be elevated when you sleep. Socks can go there too, between the inflatable and the 1/8 in mat.
    It's really difficult to get frozen shoes and socks on! BTDT! 😂

    • @JamesOfEarth
      @JamesOfEarth 9 месяцев назад

      Wet shoes are a bit much for those locations in terms of bulk and amount of moisture they’ll release overnight, but I do put my socks where you noted.

    Folks are right on the Desert Agave. Yucca is pronounced "yuck-ah" not "yoo-kah." They are both in the Asparagus Family. There are several cholla cacti (choy-ah), prickly pears, and other cacti species such as Beavertail. This is the very upper end of a valley (Shelter Valley, originally Earthquake Valley) that is the tippy edge of the Colorado Desert. On the other side of the hills is serious desert. You're back out of desert by about First Gate above Scissors Crossing.

    The bigger the group, the longer it takes to get everyone up and moving. Two of you together would make more miles, more quickly, if just the pair of you. However I know Road Runner wants to be sociable this trek, talk to people. It's a big mistake to walk more slowly than your natural speed to keep a group together though.

    I believe those were Yuca plants. They are edible and fried taste like potatoes.
