@Sarah Crowley I can't believe that a comment from 8 years ago is complaining about missing the old Collective Soul. You've made me feel old. Yet, at the same time, I feel privileged to have stumbled across your comment.
I too miss the OLD Collective Soul, their 90's albums were amazing. Sadly they took a more 'Pop' direction around the early-mid 2000's, and haven't been the same since. Vocalist Ed Roland is the leader of the group - it's his band, so I blame him, as the newer albums, and their more commercial sound are obviously the sound that he wants.
They did a couple of good songs in the 90’s but they are so much better these days beginning with dosage they just got better so I’m glad they haven’t been the same since :)
I saw CS open for Aerosmith in '92 and saw them headline in '08 and all I can say is that Collective Soul are true musicians and dedicated to their craft. This song demonstrates their natural ability to achieve a catchy chorus that lures the listener into musical paradise.
I can VIVIDLY remember during the summer of '96, I was 16 and just starting to get really serious about playing music. I had been playing guitar since I was 10 but the summer of '96 I started playing in a band that consisted of 19 and 21 year olds and the fact that these older, fantastic, no nonsense musicians deemed me good enough that they were willing to bring a KID into the fold, it really gave me confidence. I'd been playing with rag tag, mediocre 13, 14 and 15 year olds, now I was in a real working band. Anyway, I was brought in as lead guitarist while the lead singer also played guitar. The one thing they asked me to do was learn how to sing harmony. I had never done it, nor thought of doing it and had a difficult time at first. With a guitar, I could harmonize on the fly, no problem but for some reason singing it gave me trouble. I spent that whole summer busting my ass, learning how to sing harmony and the chorus to this very song is what I used to learn because there's alot going on vocally. I even took a cassette and recorded the chorus on a 10 minute loop....just 10 minutes of the chorus and IT WORKED. This song taught me vocal harmony, summer vacation....1996. Great memories!!!
I was 20 in 96' and some of my best memories was seeing my generation learning and playing music. Every weekend there was a show. Be it in your friends basement or at a bar that draws a crowd. Live music was everywhere and it was awesome to be apart of the 90's scene. Best memories of my life, period!
@mrOrange1251 lol it is look! This song is about Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy tried to sue the band after "Shine" was a hit - he claimed they copied his song "Rhinosauris." At least "Rhinosaurus" and 1/3 of their songs were garbage to me; the rest was half-decent, but holds nothing over 90% of the bands I prefer. The Smashing Pumpkins may have made a mark in the 1990s, but it was nothing more than a skidmark, like the "American Pie" films.
Collective Soul and the Smashing Pumpkins happen to both be on my short list of favorite bands from the 90s, and while their respective approaches were different, it's always been a bit of a bummer to me that there seems to be so little overlap in fans. It's all subjective, but as obnoxious as Billy Corgan can be, the Pumpkins produced some of the most incredible, sweeping music of the decade. Collective Soul is comparatively underrated, but both bands are (or at least were) good.
Henry Lightfoot Precisely spoken. Given I like Collective Soul better, there were a good handful of Smashing Pumpkins' songs that sounded decent to me. However, I've only heard their greatest hits album "Rotten Apples", so I may have missed some better songs...
Henry Lightfoot ok guys, now that my Collective Soul bubble has burst because I read about old News about this song I did some research....Yes maybe there is one riff that MAY sound similar, Im sorry, but I missed these guys (collective Soul) because I was consumed with Barney, and ninja turtles, but recently discovering them again after the "World I Know", I am going to continue to believe that this song is DEDICATED to all those Mis understood children, that think outside the box, that are eclectic,. under appreciated, made fun of, and are SMASHING in their own rights.....Dang, is DECEMBER that way too....im bummed....I think I am going to NEVER read anything from anyone...I don't want to know...and as far as COLLECTIVE SOUL they were WAY ahead of their time, we need to bring back their message of COLLECTIVE thought, SOUL, and over all GREATNESS that humanity is.....
The lead singer Ed is playing a Eddie Van Halen guitar that he gave to him. Collective Soul was on tour with Van Halen at this time. Too cool!

Of what I've been missing
Exploit your position
Don't think I didn't listen
Hey I hope you're feeling

Your ways and your means
You smashing young man
Help me to see
The good you have planned
You're wearing me thin
You smashing young man
You preach synthetic-like
Peace is an oversight
It's nothing to ignite
Your self-lit spotlight

I don't recall wanting to
I don't recall bowing before you
But I'm so impressed
With the kindness in your attitude
Help me I plea

At least "Rhinosaurus" and 1/3 of their songs were garbage to me; the rest was half-decent, but holds nothing over 90% of the bands I prefer.

Beggar's description
Of what I've been missing
Exploit your position
Don't think I didn't listen
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little better now
Success is so tragic
Pain is your gadget
Your tongue is just lashing
Just bitching by habit
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little purer now
Hey I hope you're feeling
Securer now
Help me I plea
I don't understand
Your ways and your means
You smashing young man
Help me to see
The good you have planned
You're wearing thin
You smashing young man
You preach synthetic-like
Peace is an oversight
It's nothing to ignite
Your self-lit spotlight
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little special now
Hey I want to tell you
I think you're special now
Help me I plea
I don't understand
Your ways and your means
You smashing young man
Help me to see
The good you have planned
You're wearing thin
You smashing young man
I don't recall asking for guidance
I don't recall wanting to
I don't recall bowing before you
But I'm so impressed
With the kindness in your attitudee
Help me I plea
I don't understand
Your ways and your means
You smashing young man
Help me to see
The good you have planned
You're wearing thin
You smashing young man
