This demo, and many others, belong in modern art museums. This is a highly technical art form that takes years of training and dedication. People who never did it may never quite get how much inventiveness it takes to make those demos. I bow deeply in front of the masters.
The skill of these guys is so underrated in this society. From my pov, these guys have to become all the awards and everything you can get. Not some singers or actors. These guys have to come the oscars, the music awards and the nobel peace prize, because they are geniuses in their craft. fucking amazing geniuses!
Just like rice grain painters are able to create beautiful paintings on a tiny canvas, the c64 demoscene wizards never cease to amaze me! It's creativity in spite of restrictions. THIS is ART!
The winning demos always find the right balance between technical ability, storytelling, music and style. Fairlight knocked the ball out of the park, once again. It's been a pleasure to be alive to see their work. 1010/1010.
thank you so much for this upload. In the beginning I found the crowd to be a bit tame for what seemed like amazing effects - luckily, everyone was warmed up by the end. Fairlight, never stop making C64 demos please! And please save us from AI....
The art in this one is SO GREAT!! Excellent demo, and check that full screen graphics! Is that full screen as in 48 bytes of graphics per line now? Nice!! I did not want this one to end. It's compelling.
The explanation for the vertical stripe in flescos mode sounds like a cOpperdragon VICII Dizer & RGB2HDMI (PiZero with firmware & LUMA Code Receiver) combination was used for conversion to HDMI. This is the only device on the market now that works in this way. Sounds like a possible firmware update to me.
Do you think they use sta, stx, sty to S+$3BFF (the garbage byte when you open top/bottom border) in rapid successions, and then display two sprites while it loads the a,x y agin., repeat
Awesome. Top of the line coding skills. They don't code like this anymore. We had to back in the day and we loved it. Great demo Fairlight!! You still got it and it makes me happy to see your skills. Thanks for the joy. Greetings from Sly (Orion).
I think there is some "cheat" in it. Kickbass feels too deep, and too pure to be generated by SID chip of C64. Flange effect also. But even so I love chiptunes made by Fegolhuzz. This demo has super groovy tracks, but my favorite is stil music of the demo called "the space is broken".
@@Golyszulat Maybe I'm not quite getting it, but if that "cheat" comment is meant seriously: It's just plain pure 8580 SID music generated by the synth features of the hardware. No additional hardware is used and there aren't any software-emulated sounds in here either, I suppose you were thinking of sampled audio stuff or similar. But Fegolhuzz got it done without such trickery. That deep bass is perfectly normal for the SID, thanks to its multimode filter. What sounds like a flange effect is either achieved by applying bandpass filtering or it might as well be two synth voices playing the same sounds slightly shifted in timing and/or pitch to get that effect. Shows again what a great little piece of hardware that SID chip still is, if driven by a skilled musician like Fegolhuzz.
@@TRX303 "I suppose you were thinking of sampled audio stuff or similar" - Yes, I was thinking of additional, modern (non SID) samples an effects and/or equalizer being used for enhancing bass. Thanks for making it clear to me, but I'll need to test it some day, to fully belive it. I cant understand, why no games or cracktros had thoose pure, superdeep kickbasses back in the day, if the chip was capable to do it. This one, and Space is broken sounds a bit unreal to me with those clean, deep kickbass sounds, and kinda "too clean" flange effects.
I remember the first few people who started the leet movement on the old bulletin boards in the 80s. Thought nothing would come of it. How wrong was I? 😂
As an old 80s democoder this blows my mind. You could be forgiven to believe it was made on an Amiga.
They have squeezed the last drops out of our beloved C64 including the VIC-II ghost-bytes for the border magic... just incredible.

The zooming infinite bobs part is black magic.
10:30 That endpart leading to the culmination of everything, and supported by this driving soundtrack, always gives me goosebumps!
I never dreamed or imagined the Commodore 64 was capable of this level of performance. Gonna shock a lot of people with this Demo.
Never stop them coming! The demoscene is truly amazing and should be UNESCO World Heritage :D Commodore64, 6510+SID+VIC

2:48 Its always amazing to see an old 8 bit computer have scaling that smooth.
Not every 8-bit is capable of this. 😉

10/10 great design, story, gfx and music! thanks for sharing.
Excellent stuff.
Amazing ❤❤❤❤ 🎉🎉🎉🎉
That is some serious skill…mind is boggled
True art
Borderline magic 0:48 :) Most people didn't even realize that right after the RUN screen, it displayed border-less graphics on all sides... amazing.
That's magic, pure magic 😍

Absolutely outstanding, got to be the best music I’ve ever heard from the C64

Awesome demo!
that's just fantastic
amazing what they can get out of this machine.
These look like amiga 1200 graphics ? Amazing work on retro equipment.
they never upgraded!
The soundtrack and all was so nice. Thanks again. LDA
Unbelievable, that was super cool.
Insane!
Unfortunately, the .d64s files of this demo are not (yet) in CSDB or other demoscene sites...

That bass sound is definitely not coming from the SID
It's deep as it's powered through a huge sound system.
Is there a bug in the flescos ?
No it was the compomachine how the extract the signal form it, might been the scaler, apparenly on the monitor they used it looked alright.
