  • Is it possible to make a banana leaf waterproofing agent for cob or earthen walls? In this video I will use a decoction method from Peru and another technique from Ghana. Natural alternatives to waterglass, risky lime plastering, non-permeable boiled linseed oil, etc. are out there, but it’s hard to find recipes and videos. So, I am investigating techniques that are used worldwide, and if possible, I will put them to the test! Comments? Ideas? Let me know, and we will join forces to find natural and cheaper alternatives together man!!
    Links to documents that give you more info on the subject:

    Peru technique: www.jurina.it/10/2012/02/2001_...
    Ghana technique, section 1.2: repository.upenn.edu/cgi/viewc...
    Let’s make the world of cob easy and accessible for every man on the planet!

    Using cow dung mix with cob also extend the life of cob deterioration due to weather condition.

    There is also Casein - whitewash that is waterproofing. 80% white cheese, 20% lime, (from memory)

    Destructive distillation (producer gas extraction) of banana leaves might give you a useful waterproofing tar. Interesting video.

    • @Le0nski
      @Le0nski  4 года назад

      interesting idea! Pine tar is created in a similar way in order to protect wood. That would be very interesting to try!

      Interesting ! The problem with tar is that is usually toxic for water and whoever is in contact with it..

    If you want to waterproof earthen structures, use tadelakt.

    You should try it instead as a moisture barrier instead of plastic. Use the whole leaves.

    Hello, It's a great informative video. Do you have any idea if colocasia leaves work like this?

    • @Le0nski
      @Le0nski  2 года назад +1

      I honestly have no idea. If you can find them cheap, just try it by using one of the methods I described in the video. You never know, it might be a winner..

    Great topic Leon! Ive got myself a rocket mass Heather but it cracks once in a while besides fuel hole. Its a common problem but do you know any mix with can help prevent cracks?? Greetings

    • @Le0nski
      @Le0nski  5 лет назад

      Hey Kulka!! Great to hear from you. What I did with my fuel hole, I added a really thick layer of cob around it. I't is over 10 inches thick at some parts. This prevents it from cracking. If it did crack, i would repair it several times with new cob until it stopped cracking. Hope this helps! Take care!

    Thanks for the research. Have you tried persimmon juice as used by Japanese?

    • @Le0nski
      @Le0nski  4 года назад

      Hey, sorry to respond so late 😬 I haven’t tried that yet! Have you heard or seen it somewhere online or have you used it yourself? It might just work in combination with jaggery (first melasses from sugar cane) that is used in India.

      @@Le0nski given that persimmon & banana rarely grow in the same area, I suspect they are different techniques. have a paper umbrella waxed with it. I haven't used it yet. I used linseed oil on external side of wall.
