So I just tried waterproofing a macrame plant hanger, which is made of white cotton cord. I used paraffin wax as I read this was best, also beeswax looks like it would be yellowing. I melted the wax with mineral oil as this was supposed to made it thinner and more flexible etc.
I just ended up with loads of thick lumpy wax drying, which stuck the strings together and just flaked right off on holding the string.it was about 1:2 mineral oil to wax mix.
    Anyway...any suggestions?
Do you keep the pot heating while doing that? I melted the wax in a double boiler in the kitchen, then took the bowl outside and just dipped the ropes in and then hung them. The wax was still totally liquid but off the stove.
I didn't leave the ropes in the pot to soak up like you did. But I don't understand how, putting in a hole coiled up spool like you did, it doesn't dry stuck together with loads of lumpy wax? Is the key leaving it to soak up while the pot is still on heating and melting the wax? I still thought it would end up all dried together lumpy and hard with wax that cracks once you take it out. 🤔

I left mine in the pot to cook and really soak in. when very hot most excess wax will run off

@@donaldporta ah ok thank you. I did try again doing it while the wax was still on the stove and leaving it in there a few minutes ( still paraffin wax and mineral oil though) but wasn't much better. Maybe needs to be almost at boiling.
Also I did wonder if maybe it's because you were waxing quite a thin thread, and the cord I was doing was more kinda thick and rough with little fibres coming out that would catch more wax, if that makes sense.
I saw another video saying you can waterproof stuff by melting silicone (like from a gun for doing bathrooms etc) in mineral spirits, haven't tried it yet 🤔

I know this is an older video but can you tell me if this will hurt dyes in the thread? Darken it? Lighten it? Thank you!

the bees wax will alter the color only slightly depending on the color of the wax, some of my older bees wax is darker from the cells that were used when melting it.
