That's just to give the design a frame, if you will. All knit stitches on the edges will actually create curling vs preventing it. But it might only curl in the amount of that frame, depending on your yarn and tension. Depending on the fiber, you can block it to prevent the curling. You can also crochet a border on it to stop the curling. Alternatively, if you want to prevent curling, use a mix of knit and purl stitches on the edges instead of just knit stitches. You could do 3 or 4 stitches on each edge and work seed stitch which would be alternating k and p every peg and then working the reverse on the next row. Seed stitch would be a beautiful complement to this design but you'll need to keep track of your stitch pattern. For an easier edge, you could do garter stitch and work all purl stitches on each edge, for every other row.
