I've taken apart and traced the circuitry of that exact model! There's loads of descrete components. It's all extremely repairable but trying to track down a fault is also EXTREMELY time consuming. If it develops faults, I'd be tempted to recommend scrapping the old control system and upgrading it with something more modern. That's also going to be very time consuming but you'll end up with a machine that's much easier to use and repair.
Yeah that would be the point I would upgrade, if its something I can't figure out. I have diagnosed a few things already.
I used to work on (among other things) an 80s Mazak Quickturn, very similar to this machine, with a half burned out screen, and it's the most pleasant and painful experience at the same time. I'm amazed you got it to talk to Fusion! Great job mate!
Haha, yeah I'm amazed I was able to get a post processor for it. At least the whole screen is still working! 🤞
Heh, screens are one of the easier things to replace, especially these days. $50 scan converter, any surplus 4:3 LCD screen you have laying around - job done.
@@SeanHodginshave you thought about a cnc conversion, so "just" sticking a new controller into it , id recommend a masso g3 touch😮
This is sick
Is that.. a giant Revo nozzle?
Edit: it’s a top. I’m stupid
I realize it looks exactly like one after I made it. haha
@@SeanHodgins glad I’m not alone then!
AvE bought an old CNC lathe. It had more problems than solutions. I believe he's in the process of parting it out
And he calls himself an engineer… 😆
I love old machines, the older the better.
Prefer working on newer stuff but still have love for the legacy machines 💚
Yeah I like both, but it is nice when new machines "just work" - when you can afford them that is.
@@SeanHodgins I always wanted to buy an old mill or maybe lathe, until I got a CNC machining job. Now I am blessed with acces to all sorts of machine.
Some of our newer machines actually have more issues than some way older ones. What I like most about new machines is probably the glass that doesn't scratch like plastic does, meaning you can actually see what's going on. In a way though it's more scary seeing more 🤣
i have a 1979 Hercus paperweight on my channel.
these old machines were stout
Just checked it out. Cool machine!
Fanuc classic, awesome bro!
So classic, I love it.
You should sell lightsaber hilts and you’ll recoup that 7k at supa speed.
I should at least make one!
@@SeanHodgins Would be cool! Man I just had this sudden flashback when I looked at your pfp so I checked your vids and it IS you!
I watched your volumetric display video about a couple years back which sent me down a path of playing with lasers in my garage and generally sparked my curiosity enough to try my own experiments. I became really interested in a device called the Holofan. Wasn’t as cool as what you made but I felt I could semi replicate it.
To make a long story short, you inspired me to experiment and got me started thinking about a lot of things differently. Such a small world (or should I say algorithm). Thank you, genuinely. That single video you made had a profound effect on me.
Thats just soo good
Cyberpunk? Retro? Isn't that just Dieselpunk lol?

I can’t keep track… haha
I wish my SL1-A came with the fanuc control...
What does yours have?
@SeanHodgins mine has the Yasnac LX2. It has some alarms keeping it from moving, which I haven't been able to resolve, so I may retrofit it with an old (newer than the 80s or 90s) Sinumerik control
We had one in highschool metal shop scared the shit out of me
That is fair. Cool you had one at school!
Yes
Wow. That is real cool 🤙 🎉 congratulation for buying
Thanks!
How much was it
Still smaller than the 12,000lb mill I shoved into my garage. probably roughly the same vintage. Where do you find old machines that are so clean?? Or are you just not showing us the pressure washing step?
Yeah thats huge, your garage can hold that?! I hand scrubbed most of it, and didn't show it. haha But it actually wasn't super grimy, so it must have been cleaned a few times in its life.
@@SeanHodgins I replied to this twice, and youtube keeps deleting my comments
@@gorak9000 I haven't seen anything, are you trying to post a link?
@@SeanHodgins Nope, apparently just some words I'm using it doesn't like
I'll try breaking it up into multiple short comments to figure out what it doesn't like and why it keeps deleting my comments. Yes, it fits, but it takes up a lot of room, especially because it's all spread out and disassembled. The previous owner was cutting a composite with graphite in it, and it just caked the entire insides of the machine, including in the oil passages in the turcite on the box ways.
The cool music is: Karl Casey - Bad Trip (a.k.a white bat)
Yeah hes amazing.
How accurate is it on smaller parts like that?
I haven't done any real precision or accuracy measurements, but it should be great for small parts are well.
Nice.
Thanks
whats the backlash on it?
Not sure yet, just getting it going then need to do some testing.
Will it run doom?
