    Just because this is a true classic and my favorite super hero film, I wouldn’t flame you for providing an honest assessment of the UHD transfer. So, if you say that despite the shortcomings of this transfer, it’s the best its ever looked, then that’s good enough for me.
    Thank you!

  • @Svante
    @Svante 5 лет назад +28

    The movie was shot with diffusion filters, to give it that soft/dreamy look. So it’s nothung wrong with the transfer, it’s just the way the movie was shot and should look. It’s the best transfer so far on any video format, and I’m happy with the upgrade.
    A lot of movies from the late 70:s and early 80:s was shot this way. So we can’t expect all these classics to look super sharp.

    • @nacthenud
      @nacthenud 5 лет назад +10

      I agree. If they had somehow made it super sharp it would be untrue to the source and director's vision. You can't fault this movie for looking soft anymore than you can criticize a black & white film for not having colour.

    • @johnarcarese4804
      @johnarcarese4804 5 лет назад +3

      Svante Skoog The reviewer is an idiot. Anyone reviewing it should know that the soft look was deliberate, as was the color palette.

    As a huge Superman fan and Superman The Movie being my all time favourite movie... it's definitely the best it's ever looked on all the media's. The high definition 4K shots definitely show on close ups of Reeve in costume and some of the Metropolis scenes in the day and Luthor's Lair...
    Geoffrey Unsworth's work on Superman The Movie was beautiful, giving it a dreamy imaginative look, so unless you're familiar with that from Superman The Movie as a fan... It's hard to compare it to more modern day movie's where 4k really shines...
    Unfortunately Warner Bros made a big mistake on the UK release over the US release... which states the Theatrical version both in 4K and Blu-ray.... Whilst on the US version this is true, the UK version contains the Special Edition with the few added scenes and new sound mix not the original.

  • @auiki
    @auiki 6 лет назад +5

    Totally agree with your review! I am a huge Superman fan, so this was a pre-order purchase for me. I was quite disappointed. To get black levels to even look black. I had to increase my TV black levels and put enhanced contrast to max, which I’ve never done for any 4K! Sound was good though, but not thunderous with its score, effects were great, but has to be cranked up to appreciate the score! I may trade this one in and just keep onto my Blu-ray box set!

  • @johnflanagan9153
    @johnflanagan9153 5 лет назад +3

    The " soft Palette, " and " lack of fine detail " is a product of Geoffrey Unsworth's use of filters during the original filming, so even though this a " true native-4k transfer," you can't extract detail that wasn't there, or was muted from the beginning. I'm not sure what your display is, but watching this on a signature series LG OLED, the black levels, especially the space scene's are the deepest they've EVER been. The Dolby vision/HDR treatment makes costume's pop, and contrast is fantastic for a film of this vintage. Agree totally with your appraisal of the audio, as it is the best it's ever been; During Lois Lane's helicopter ride and Superman's coming out party, the sound is fantastic, having built on Michael Thau's amazing audio reconstruction, done way back in 2000 on the DVD. Not including through seamless branching " The extended cut " was a misstep, as it features some terrific gun effect's and other action sequences that were deemed superfluous. This is as good as this film will EVER look, and let's not forget, to this day it's still the best big-screen adaptation of ANY comic book hero...period.

    • @therealshanelee
      @therealshanelee  5 лет назад +2

      Like I mention in the review of how I rated it. I'm sure this looks how it originally is. That's all fine. But what the masses would expect is a different story. And my review equipment is listed in the description below.

    • @johnflanagan9153
      @johnflanagan9153 5 лет назад

      Shane, I enjoyed your review very much, and you being a videophile/audiophile like myself, know how a vintage film will look and sound with a fair degree of accuracy and expectation; In our digital age, a lot people just can't accept the organic qualities of movies that were shot on film...they want everything sterile and sanitized. The epic 65mm epics such as " Cleopatra, " " Ben Hur " and " Lawrence of Arabia " are rumored to have had complete 4k restoration's over the last year, and if that is true, expect something quite astonishing. Great work!

    Aw, man! I was expecting good to reference quality from WB, especially after what they did with Blade Runner.

  • @isak6626
    @isak6626 5 лет назад +1

    Thank you Shane for this and all the other excellent videos. I really appreciate your work, especially the parts where you comment on the difference between the standard Blu-ray and the UHD Blu-ray as this tells us whether it is worth spending 20 bucks extra on the UHD version or not. There are however a few things that would make your videos even more valuable to enthusiasts like myself.
    1. Tell us about your viewing environment
    When you describe to your audience what you have seen, it is vital for us to know HOW you have seen it. What TV are you using? Has it been professionally calibrated for both SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision? What Blu-ray player or other source device are you using? All of these things may have a profound impact on your viewing experience which you are telling us about. You don’t necessarily have to tell us everything in the videos, but at least in the description.
    For example, you often talk about black levels and HDR implementation. Black level handling and HDR presentation is better on OLED TVs and is affected by calibration as well as HDR optimization technologies (e.g. dynamic metadata “simulation” technologies such as the one active on LG OLEDs when “dynamic contrast” is set to Low). Furthermore, some new Blu-ray players also have similar technologies, such as the Panasonic UB820 which lets you select which type of TV you have to optimize the HDR presentation for the specific peak brightness of your type of TV, making sure that specular highlights as well as black levels are well presented even though the disc has been mastered on a professional display that have far greater luminance capabilities than any consumer TV. A mismatch between your display’s and the mastering display’s luminance capabilities may result in that the picture looks dim.
    2. A note about the source picture quality
    When you mention a disc’s tech specs, you mention the resolution of the cameras used as well as the digital intermediate. However, both of these specs are poorly correlated with perceived picture quality. What’s more relevant is the type of camera, e.g. its capability to capture a high dynamic range. If you haven’t seen it, check out Steve Yedlin’s “resolution demo” where he goes through the determinants of perceived picture quality by comparing a number of professional video cameras and how different resolutions of digital intermediates affect the final picture: www.yedlin.net/ResDemo/index.html
    To sum up, a little more information about your viewing environment and some info about the quality rather than the quantity of pixels would be much appreciated.

    Hey guys why haven't you done WATCHMEN (2008) 4k BluRay review?
    I think it's one of the top10 blu rays available IMHO
    It has some of the illest demo worthy sequences. The contrast is insane, since it was shot on film, the blacks are intense and the colors are lush.
    The grain is beautifully done.

    They've a 3-hour TV version, which affords a digital HDX copy through VUDU. The ATMOS is appealing, but it's hard knowing there likely will not be a 4K 'Director's Cut'.

    Don't always agree with your video/audio reviews (most of the time I do though) but you got this one spot on! In this 4K release colors were defined tighter but bland. Detail is quite a bit more than the regular Blu-Ray but the 1080p version is much brighter and has so much more saturated colors. HDR is non existent in the 4K version! I understand it will always be a bit darker with HDR so the highlights become brighter and have more color pop to it, but this has the worst of both worlds! Where the costume is the centrepiece and should stand out with bright reds, yellows and blues - it looks more like the evil Superman from the third movie.
    So many times comparing the different versions with an underwhelming color palette for the 4K. Thought majority of the movie had more than just a light grain. At times its quite heavy. Clarity is a step above the regular Blu-Ray but more because the 1080p version isn't a great transfer than anything else, otherwise I would say everything is superior picture wise on the regular Blu-Ray. Audio is great with some sounds and music cues very well defined. Don't think this is worth the upgrade unless you're a big Superman fan, especially since its the theatrical cut and they'll surely release the extended version soon enough.

    Your 100% right, this transfer is soft, its flat and nothing pops out of it, plus its foggy and grainy as hell. Its ok to retain grain but when grain is distractig as fuck its not that fun to watch, sorry. The audio is top notch though. I've heard stuff i never did before. Unfortunatly, this is definitly not a must buy. I am pretty disapointed with it so far. I was happier with the bluray at the time.

Warner knew from start how problematic this tranfer will be and the reviews will be divided, but they did it anyway. I like that. I have the old dvd of this movie so I will go to 4k, becides 1080p blue ray is inside, so no probem for me.

    I saw Superman the movie when theoretical released December 1978. It would have only been 35mm Dolby Stereo not the 70mm blow-up with first ever six-track Dolby Stereo with split surrounds even thou the cinema was geared up with duel 35/70.
    Thank goodness I have the warner Laserdisc with original Dolby Stereo with dialouge pans unlike the DVD/bluray that I have which is butchered sound remix and no I do not care to buy it again on 4k. I'd sooner play the Laserdisc as it was meant to be heard in 35mm Dolby Stereo 4:2:4.
    It had sharpness it was filmed with soft lenses had you seen in it in 1978. Colours still better than rubbish superman returns once then flew away thank goodness as that was just dire looking colour.

    UPDATE: I finally watched this UHD on my LG 65" OLED.
    I have to say the video transfer has to be the WORST transfer I have ever seen.
    I'm no "grain hater". I appreciate older films and understand that over correcting grain for a 4K transfer will have a detrimental effect on the overall picture. However, the grain is so bad that it was distracting. The film looks WORSE than the original presentation. After an hour of this painful viewing, I swapped the UHD disk with the blu ray disk. That blu ray presentation is FAR better to watch than this atrocious transfer. I am very disappointed.
