Nothing better than hearing Oliver talking about the Superman films
They should of had the TV Cuts instead and the long lost full version of 4 , maybe then it would be worth the high price
And they should have watch the dude who did the amazing job on new effects on Superman 4 than the god-awful effects on its Theatrical release
Depends if Warner ever find these extended cuts in their vaults . Superman The Movie extended cut was found by a pure fluke . This was confirmed by the podcast made by the team making the release possible . Warner Archive would love to release these cuts if ever found
This is actually pretty well priced for what the set is 4K and Blu-ray release are expensive right now but if you're a collector that actually wants to see a future for physical media the pricing is for the greater good.
As bad as the fourth Superman film is,...I would def be interested in watching the extended cut 🦸👍
agree. I'll pass on this release, for the lack of the inclusion of extended superman 4.
Agreed about the tv edit of S2. If they remastered and released that version of the film, the fan editing floodgates would burst like a dam, lol. There IS a good movie there somewhere between the 2 (or 3) cuts of the film, but sadly, with Donner's passing and Lester having disappeared off the face of the Earth, it'll probably never happen.
2 is great movie as is with some flaws.. I accepted Superman 2 theatrical cut as the definitive version a long time ago, and frankly the Donner cut was so sloppy it should have stayed in the WB vaults..
@@dbreiden83080 TV broadcast will always be my "official" version, as it's the version I grew up on. It's got a lot of the "unseen" Donner footage already (minus the Brando stuff) except it's better takes and better background music. Take that version, add Brando back in, remove the Lester slapstick (which the Donner cut does one thing right, at least) and there you have it: the perfect version of Superman 2 (although I'd love to see some new things added to fill in some gaps).
I hope Selutron's fan edit can surface in full at some point, even incomplete it's the closest to a definitive S2 edit.
@@bigredjanie Glad to hear people still remember that guy. I discovered his channel literally weeks after the Donner Cut was released in 2006 and it's what got me into fan editing. I've seen probably 30 different fan edits of Superman 2, as well as taken cracks at it myself. Only a small handful of editors come anywhere close to what Selutron was able to accomplish.
@@bigredjanie it even got positive reviews from both Tom Mankiewicz and Richard Donner. So whoever he is, the guy knew what he was doing.

I’m glad you did a rundown of the issues discovered so far as most other so called reviewers haven’t or acted as if they were unimportant. This is really slipshod work from Warner as usual except on a grander scale. The price point is too high and errors like this shouldn’t be supported in spite of otherwise great new scan.
Losing the 70mm of I alone is a reason to reject this along with keeping the original 4k master when it was supposed to be replaced by a redone version.
The errors in the sequels are inexcusable. Once again this is a moment where the Warner Archive division should be put in charge of the main studio label.
I’m extremely glad you mentioned the Batman 4K issues. Those drive me insane and the teal in Returns is hideous especially. The otherwise fantastic new scans are further ruined by the lack of original audio in any form.
It’s almost as if the team behind the flawed DCAU releases was let loose on this Superman set!!
It seems to me like WB ultimately released an unfinished product. But the Warner Archive label actually goes the extra mile for their releases.
Respectfully, there is one comment here that I strongly disagree with; I think that physical media is about to have a major resurgence relative to streaming. First, the exclusivity of streaming platforms is taking away their economic advantage of streaming over cable and satellite services. Second, people are learning that as Streamers giveth they also taketh away; even in cases where an album, movie, or show is fully purchased and saved to a private queue they've become no longer available. Well, the studio doesn't come to your door demanding you relinquish your discs. First we're going to see second hand prices go up, then the studios will take notice and dust off the DVD and Blu-ray making machines.
I hope this is true. Something wonderful will be lost the day we can no longer buy physical media.
I think you’re absolutely right, I think people think pessimistically about physical media these days is because 4K has been kind of a letdown. As someone who has a 4K setup I admit I didn’t need it, the jump from FHD to 4k isn’t worth the cost for entry. The players, the discs, and TVs haven’t had a noticeable price reduction like blu rays did back during the height of that platform, and pair that with tons of sub par 4K releases, people are rightfully disappointed. But I agree with everything you said Physical is only going to grow as time goes on just look at vinyl
I must be a bit sentimental about Superman IV. My father took me to the theater to see it when I was a kid. I was blown away. Even that being put aside I have always loved it and still do. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's just good popcorn film fun. Not to mention it is still THE SUPERMAN Christopher Reeve. I like everything he was in no matter how B movie it may be.
Same for me. Superman 4 was the only Superman movie I saw at the movies when I was a kid.. My Mom bought me all the 7-11 Collectors Cups that summer.. Sure objectively it is a bad movie. However for me the combo of nostalgia, Chris Reeve, and that fun B movie feel will always make me love it.. Watch it at least once a year..
I’m glad the donner cut exists flaws and all
Yeah I saw it in 2006 when it was released and was hyped as hell for it.. Loved it at first and then on further viewing man it is pretty messy. WB spent nickels and dimes on that cut, and it really showed..
@@dbreiden83080 completely agree that it deserved better but it’s pretty crazy we still got it even with its issues. Donner never should have been fired in the first place. Everything I liked about the theatrical cut was donner and every weird addition was Lester. Like the Superman shield that family guy parodied.
@@philipcohen7192
Lester did some great things too.. The Paris rescue was spectacular and had to WOW audiences in 1981.
I still prefer it to the theatrical cut warts and all. I’ll take a consistent tone and feel that’s in line with the first film with some shoddy special effects over Lester’s annoying tone deaf comedy (I say that with love, I don’t hate it, but the shift to comedy bothers me and clearly was why Superman 3 wasn’t as successful)

I caught the new 4k remaster on the big screen with my son. I've seen that movie 50 times throughout my life on VHS, DVD, and Blu Ray and I ca honestly say it was like I had never seen (or heard) it before.

Damn. I just watched the film in the theater a couple weeks ago and it was clearly not the 4K remaster.
@@SumDumGy if it was, it was probably the 2018 4K master.
@@darthkurland From how it looked to me, I doubt it was any remaster at all. If it was, I’m sure it predates that one.
I would love to see the alternate cut of Superman 4..
It can only improve it.
Wouldn’t we all. It depends on whether the original elements still exist.
For the cost and the hype, there are way too many issues for a release that should have been definitive and archival
They should have put out the finished version of Superman 4, the 2 plus hour cut during Covid. It is a trainwreck all fans have been wanting to see since like 2000..
Just like the Rocky set
Agreed. They simply boxed low-budget editing efforts into this package. Until WB truly invests on the audio-visual remastering of these movies, I will stay away from buying them.

Thank you for pointing out all the errors / mistakes of judgement Warner Bros has made with this set. Wow! What a mess!
They obviously think four is a piece of trash, I love it as a great piece of nostalgic memory. But why would you bother remastering the movie and let the music not syncing up just pass on by like it’s no big deal? It’s ridiculous.

Leave it to WB to cock up what should have been an easy release. There should have been TV extended cuts, proper color correcting, and a proper sound mix.
They should have gotten notes from Fox with the Alien Box set.
Brilliant review. Great analysis on the audio in particular. 👏👏👏👏👏

Wow! I wish I could have done that. What a treat that must have been to look at.
@@timothymathetes it really was!
Same.
Oliver,
I think it’s time for WB to entrust their vintage library to their Warner Archive label, because they actually put in the extra effort, time and money into their releases.
I really don't give two shits about technical specifications, like video and audio. I mainly just care about special features, and if this set has all the same bonuses as my current DVD box set, then I don't see it worth upgrading.
Ill stay with my Blu-rays of this.
I am on the fence.. I wanted to get a new version of Superman 4, only to find out they butchered the audio tracks..
Ollie, my brother from another mother- I share your passion for Superman, and grateful for all you do regarding the caped wonder! Warner really is sloppy. Scream, Shout, Arrow and even Paramount do a way better job with their transfers.
The main problem was a lack of quality control in my opinion.
The 4K version of this movie and all the movies are now on MAX. The picture is definitely better than ever as are some of the sound effects. But as noted the soundtrack is really off in a lot of places. Looks like Warner Bros. has no intention of fixing this since they are now streaming it on their service..
Then someone needs to shove this video into their faces.
Well, someone needs to bring it to their attention because I don’t want to have my ears assaulted as well.
@@darthkurland
I am sure they know.. This is obviously the official version of the movie now as far as they are concerned. It actually has a sharper image and better sound than Superman Returns.. Sad as that is..
Those individual covers... besides the bad photoshop jobs, I'm surprised they didn't use the logos made from the 2018 soundtrack releases, they were excellent updates that made all the film's logos look more consistent.
I went to see it at the cinema the other week for its 45th anniversary/Warner’s 100th anniversary.
It was like 2 films. A huge amount of film grain and looked quite muddy during the composite shots. However Brando in his reflective costume looked great.
Once Cal got to Earth it was a lovely watch… first time at the cinema since aged 5 in 1978!!!
1000% agree about wanting a Superman II TV edition dvd. I love that version
I’m pretty sure that the TV Cut of “Superman II” exists in widescreen. Where do you think the deleted scenes came from?
One gripe I have with this set is they should have used that extra case that houses the pointless collectibles as a separate case for the Donner cut. Three films have the original artwork on the front, with the S and corresponding roman numeral on the back. Not Superman II, though, as that has the original theatrical poster on one side, and the artwork for the Donner cut on the other. Such an asinine decision that just makes no sense.
At least, they should have had the same color timer for all titles in this set. For the 2011 Blu-Ray release, that person was a gentleman named Pat Miller.
Superman The Movie has a higher average bit rate than the 2018 edition , and the reason for dropping one of the sound mixes
Dang that’s pretty scathing for the Donner cut, I still prefer it over the theatrical cut even with its imperfections. I’m honestly most annoyed with Superman Returns being omitted, I’ve been dying for a new transfer of that film and if it’s been shelved because of Singer and Spacey that’s frustrating. What they did is abhorrent and wrong but I’m able to separate the art from the artist. Here’s hoping that we get a 4K of Superman returns and Supergirl soon
Fingers crossed.
Please release the TV cut of Superman 2!
have you managed to find it on the internet yet?
But that doesn’t mean that it’ll never see the light of day.
Yep, these are also on the Max streaming service. I was honestly laughing hard with the complete bouched-up music cues of Superman IV, and I'm shocked that Warner Bros let this slide, even though I shouldn't be shocked. XD I love Alexander's score as much as the next fan does, so it is embarrassing to see this happen.
If you ask me, Warner Bros needs to start over. Certainly, when it comes to the music elements of “Superman IV.” We got a better presentation of that film’s score on CD than we did here.
I just finished watching the movie for the first time and much of what you said in your retrospective... you were correct that anyone can be surprised how good it is, emotional, and fun. I really enjoyed it 😅
I remmmeber watching The Donner Cut of Superman 2 when it first came out, I thought it was Extremly Poorly Executed in the Edit Room,, That movie alone needs a Re-Edit with a Better Editor seriously
The one editor who should have been directly involved with that project is Stuart Baird, who also edited the first film.
In fact, Stuart Baird received an Academy Award nomination for his editing work on “Superman: The Movie.”
Another overlooked: why does the special edition of Superman 1 didn't get a 4k transferred?
Probably waiting for the ultimate release in 2028 for 50th anniversary

Sydney J Furie said he delivered a finished 2 plus hour cut of Superman 4 to Cannon and WB so unless it got tossed out, it is still sitting in the WB vaults..
@@dbreiden83080 then Warner Bros needs to start digging in the vaults to try and find the damn thing.
In the Donner Cut of “Superman II,” the rocket was actually a miniature built and filmed by Derek Meddings and his crew, but I will say that the composite didn’t look very convincing.
Wonderful review thanks for the detailed information. I'm still buying this because Christopher Reave was my childhood Superman.
I'll stick to my dvd box set they released right after Superman Returns
Don’t you mean Blu-Ray?
For the Donner cut, it's unfortunate about the budget for the added effects. For anyone that has seen the Directors Edition of Star Trek The Motion Picture, will see that it is possible to have top notch effects remastered and redone to modernize the movie. As much as I doubt it will ever happen, it would be amazing if they would revisit and redo the effects for this film.
In regards to Superman IV, curious if the North American releases have the same audio issues, hence the delay for the North American release?
Unfortunately, they do. I already complained about it to the man who restored the score for the films, Mike Matessino. And he was genuinely horrified that Warner Bros butchered this release in so many ways.
It's kinda of ironic that none of these movies outside of the first movie have never had the TV cut released of them on DVD or Blu-ray.
I do know that the TV Cut of “Superman II” was found in its original widescreen aspect ratio, because it was the source for the deleted scenes from the Donner Cut.
Very concerned about Warner’s upcoming Enter the Dragon 4K now…
I worry about what will come of WB's home release division with Zaslav's further cost cutting to the entire company. And what you've described in this review is concerning, especially for what's supposed to be a prestige anniversary release.
Zaslav and James Gunn really need to do their homework regarding these classic films.
@@darthkurland Really, it's the latter if we're being honest. Zaslav doesn't care about film history or preservation as long as he can continue dismantling WB bit by bit in order to save more pennies.
@@joshuamarks4425that’s the main reason why he needs to be removed from his position.
Thank you for this Olly 👍🏻
I like this trend of releasing tv cuts in nice quality "king kong"(1976) and lewis teagues entertaining 1980 monster movie "alligator" having hd presentations. By the way my 2006 dvds no longer work. All freeze up in the middle same with most 2007 Warner dvd releases. I think it was some factory defect. There is a youtube video that talks about it. So I wasn't the only one. If I wanted to see an open matte 300 for example I may be out of luck.
The steelbook set is physically amazing. I'm happy to own it but I'm disappointed WB left so many opportunities for upgrades down the line. I'm sure they will release a collector's edition of the first film for another anniversary.
Well, 2028 marks the 50th anniversary of the first film.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right. And it looks like WB was asleep at the wheel for this project. Especially with “Superman IV.”
The U.S. Flag is called the "American flag". It's red, white and blue. It has 50 stars on it.
Great review! Shame to learn about the sound issues. I've ordered mine from UK, so hopefully Warner get a lot of feedback and fix these problems.
What WB should have done for Superman IV’s audio is take the soundtrack version of the original score and extend the sound to Dolby Atmos while keeping the integrity of the mix instead of replacing it to sound like a band performing it like you mentioned.
They should have brought in Mike Matessino to help with that process. If there’s anyone alive who knows the score that well, it’s him.
My God nearly 40 years later Superman 4 is still finding ways to get screwed up..
This movie truly is cursed..
I have no idea why they didn’t include “Supergirl” in this set. Maybe they just wanted to focus on Christopher Reeve’s performance as Superman.
But I definitely agree that “Superman Returns” is in desperate need of a new transfer and a new overall color correction.
I was really looking forward to seeing STM done properly ive bought these movies on VHS ,LD,Dvd,Blu-ray this set isn't cheap cheap cheap
This saved me some money 👍. I was afraid that the first movie wasn't gonna be a new 4K master and the over use of HDR is so unfortunate.
Bummer about all this. I was burned by the issues (which still remain uncorrected) on the Rocky 4K set, so I cancelled my Superman 4K set. For the price, the issues are pretty unacceptable. Not sure what is going on with QA in studios like Warner. Pretty sad, especially when you consider this is part of their 100th Anniversary collection.
The studio has just been taken over by Discovery, so maybe nobody was watching over the discs, or Discovery aren't interested in committing to a project set up by AT&T.
Excellent review with amazing details and a great comprehension of the problem in these issues of Superman movies. Thanks again for such an inspired work.
I have all 4 extended tv cuts on recordable d.v.d's. Just wish WARNER would put the other 3 extended versions on blu-ray like they did part 1.
Depends if they locate the cuts . The first film was a fluke find - as confirmed on the podcast made with the team who released it
George; sourced from the internet from digitized VHS rips I presume?
I own this collection i'm absolutely satisfied with it excellent review! Keep up the good work Oliver!
I wanted Supergirl and Superman Returns to be included. And new transfers on all the Blu-Ray discs. The 70mm version as well.
I would definitely have asked WB for the 70mm Dolby Digital 5.1 mix to be included as well because it’s the best that mix has ever sounded.
It's weird how his costume changes color between the different versions.
If they were using the blue screen method, they created his costume closer to turquoise and then he was lit in a way that would allow them to return the costume to its proper blue in post production. But it is true that they didn’t get it for every shot using that method.
The Zoptics system was the main method used to make us believe a man can fly. It used a modified version of the front projection method, which not only allowed Christopher Reeve to appear to be flying towards us without moving a muscle, but it also eliminated the need to alter the color of his costume.
The efforts of all of these VFX artists were rewarded with the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1979. The winners from each department included:
• Les Bowie (Mattes & Composites)
• Colin Chilvers (Physical Effects)
• Roy Field (Optical Effects)
• Zoran Peresic (Zoptics Effects)
• Denys Coop (Front Projection)
&
• Derek Meddings (Models/Miniatures)
My hope is they at least fix these problems on the digital versions and hopefully put out replacement discs. And yes, those Batman 89 and Returns in 4K was pretty bad with people's skin tone looking like heavy saturated makeup. Really hope a fan out there does a color correction of the 4k that I can download. Kind of like what people do with Star Wars.
Hi Oliver nice video but I wished you had gone on to some details about the extras included on the Superman disks

Great breakdown as usual Oliver. I just got 1 and 2 as 3 and 4 aren’t my favourites and I’m keeping the blu ray set for completion’s sake. This set has a lot missing from it. I like the poster art on the steelbooks though. Some of those glitches are annoying though. I noticed the colour glitch on Christopher Reeve’s title the other day and the pitch wobble in 2. Kind of baffling that discs go out like this without any QA.
Think I'm just gonna stick with my blu ray box set i got many years ago, that one at least tells you exactly what it is 😆
One thing that always annoyed me and nobody ever explained why, at the beginning of Superman 2 is the S yellow with a red background and never corrected.
That was their call to reverse the colors for the reveal. Purely an artistic decision.

Thanks Oliver for the wonderful review. Wish I could afford the 4K releases, but thanks for your review, I'm kind of happy that I can't afford it.
I only have 4 film favorites Superman collection on 📀, while I got the first 2 Superman movies with extended cut on blu ray disc.
The thing I hate most about all this is that there are no individual releases. I only want Superman 2 because 3 and 4 suck kryptonite but WB has apparently refused to put out individual releases just like back in 2011 and I don't know why.
The UK has individual releases for 1, 3, and 4. Superman 2 comes with the theatrical and Donner cut with a "split" visually slipcover.
I recorded Superman the Movie(1978) off Telefutura in 2006. There was a brand new TV spot for the Nintendo Wii. "Plomo" is Spanish/Castellano for "lead".
The primary reason why I’m sticking with regular blurays and not upgrading to 4K, too many errors and as you say, constantly changing the films look.
I did that with the Batman movies, but I’m still upgrading the Superman movies
That is also why I haven't upgraded to 4K or Blu Ray, as they both can mess up the film either by dialing up the colours completely or completely dialing them way down. DVD is still probably the most authentic a movie can look
So what is the best, most complete, box set purchase at this time? The old Anthology? does that have all the Superman cuts?
That kind of boxed set doesn’t exist yet. But hopefully, WB will do something like that in time for the first film’s 50th anniversary.
I thought I was going mad when I was watching the new version of Superman IV. I was always fond of it's soundtrack and now it sounds far worse than ever.
I bought these a while ago on Apple TV and now they’re all in Vision & Atmos
What is included in the box set that isn't in the seperate disc releases? It's much cheaper buying them individually rather than the boxset!
Am I also right in thinking that the new 4K box set is missing a lot of the special features from the blu-ray anthology set?
I love your intro showing all quadrilogy superman,❤️ best superman portrayal I wanna buy his hot toys❤️
They should of been the extended cuts they wb always give us the ones were already got just different packaging its just wrong
I'm a bit miffed that the far-superior special edition of Superman '78 doesn't get a 4K transfer. I love the gauntlet scene in particular and find it a glaring hole in the theatrical cut.
Too many issues. I'll stick with my Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD set from 2006. At least it also includes Superman Returns.
I agree that movies should be in their original form but there has to be some updated version too. In superman 2 alley way change sequence the flying shot is so bad. They should fix it with CGI replacement.
Completely agree! There needs to be an Ultimate Cut of Superman 2.
@@harrisonbest8085unfortunately, neither director is available to give their input. Richard Lester has retired and Richard Donner passed away in 2021. But in terms of editing, I can think of no other choice than Stuart Baird, who also edited the first film.

We’ve been deceived for the last time.
I wonder why Warner Bros won't make an ultimate cut of Superman 2 and the Donner Cut combined? Honestly, it feels inexcusable that the 2006 visual effects of the Donner Cut have not been updated. Superman Return's color timing is in desperate need of correction. Probably best to keep pushing Warner Bros to make better remasters for these films. For now, I think I will pass on this box set. It's at least good to hear that Superman 3 received a lot of love from this new 4k remaster!
Sheesh. At this point, what is the most reliable set?
That’s definitely a tough call. But it depends on how you define reliable.
These films should be cared for with the same attention to preservation as American football television archives or the wizard of Oz, which I will say, WB, to their credit, allowed the team to do an amazing amazing job.
I was sort of perplexed that all we have in 4K is the theatrical and not Donner's preferred cut. Was the Thau cut only done in 1080P or something?
